The Group 1 Caulfield Guineas is a three-year-old race run over 1600m at Caulfield Racecourse. The $3m set weights feature is the headline act on a massive day’s racing and sets the scene for next weekend’s Caulfield Cup. Godolphin’s star galloper, Anamoe, took out last year’s stallion making race, after a brilliant second in the Group 1 Golden Rose a fortnight prior.

Godolphin will be looking to repeat history this year and have Golden Mile in the race following his solid fourth in the Golden Rose last start. Dabble has him favourite at $2.70, ahead of Dan O’Sullivan’s, Berkeley Square, at $5.00. Last start Stutt Stakes winner, Tijuana, is the only other runner in single figures at $9.00.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and there’s plenty of different form lines to analyse heading into this year’s Guineas. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Caulfield Guineas along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Tijuana (10) – $9.00
Jockey – Mark Zahra 57kg
Trainer – Ben & JD Hayes

Rode the speed and was too good last start in the Stutt Stakes, after two good fresh runs. Looks well suited here at set weights and has already ticked the 1600m box. Looks a key winning chance.

2. Berkeley Square (7) – $5.00
Jockey – Craig Williams 57kg
Trainer – Dan O’Sullivan

Came from the back last start to score well in the Exford Plate at Flemington. Arguably should be unbeaten heading into this and has a versatile racing pattern. Should run a strong mile and drawn well. Plenty to like.

3. Golden Mile (5) – $2.70F
Jockey – James McDonald 57kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Destroyed his rivals in the Ming Dynasty at Rosehill before a solid effort in the Golden Rose from a wide gate. Will appreciate the soft draw here and should enjoy a nice run behind the leaders. McDonald on. Looks hard to beat.

4. Millane (11) – $21
Jockey – Luke Nolen 57kg
Trainer – Peter G Moody

Wasn’t disgraced last start in the Golden Rose. Gets to the mile for the first time which is a bit of an unknown and the awkward alley is no help. Others make more appeal.

5. Bank Maur (17) – $20
Jockey – Jye McNeil 57kg
Trainer – Richard Laming

Ran super first up behind Waltz On By at Sandown before a dominant win at the same track last start. Step up in trip looks suitable but the car park draw is a big bump in the road. Has the ability to figure but will need luck.

6. Foujita San (18) – $23
Jockey – Damien Thornton 57kg
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes

Chased hard last start in the Stutt Stakes behind Tijuana. Looks to have 1600m written all over him but Tuesday’s barrier draw has complicated things. Place chance.

7. Meridius (16) – $19
Jockey – Damian Lane 57kg
Trainer – Lloyd Kennewell

Chased gamely in the Guineas Prelude at Caulfield last start behind the smart, Aft Cabin, in treacherous conditions. Finished well enough to suggest the mile will be no issue but will need luck from the draw.

8. Skyphios (3) – $81
Jockey – Harry Coffey 57kg
Trainer – Rob Blacker

Comes into this first up off the back of an 1800m Flemington victory. Form from last prep ties in around some key chances here but will get back from the low draw and need plenty of luck.

9. Osipenko (15) – $21
Jockey – Tim Clark 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Resumed in the Guineas Prelude and was found wanting in the heavy conditions. Showed plenty of promise in his first prep and will need a good steer from Tim Clark, but can hit back on a firmer deck.

10. Amenable (14) – $15
Jockey – Damien Oliver 57kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Got a long way back last start in the Guineas Prelude and was strong late. Step up in trip looks ideal and he gets the blinkers on for the first time. Can win.

11. Elkington Road (2) – $31
Jockey – Jamie Mott 57kg
Trainer – Michael Moroney

Made it two from two when winning at Flemington last start in BM64 grade. Big step up now but he has good ability and won’t disgrace himself in this field.

12. Sir Bailey (4) – $34
Jockey – Ethan Brown 57kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Made good late ground both runs this prep including last start in the Guineas Prelude. Will get a soft run from the good gate and the mile suits. Looks an each way chance at good odds.

13. Elliptical (1) – $17
Jockey – Blake Shinn 57kg
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Wasn’t far away in the Exford Plate before a fast finishing third to Bank Maur last start. Crying out for 1600m but will need some luck from the inside gate.

14. Lethal Thoughts (12) – $41
Jockey – Michael Dee 57kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Hasn’t done much in two runs back this prep, the latest in very testing conditions here at Caulfield. Will appreciate a drier track and the step up to 1600m but has to find his form from last prep to be competitive.

15. The Fortune Teller (8) – $26
Jockey – Jamie Kah 57kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Bolted in on debut before finishing close up last two, the latest behind Bank Maur. Others have stronger form coming into this but it’s hard to knock the stables runners and J Kah is on board.

16. Dashing (13) – $126
Jockey – Linda Meech 57kg
Trainer – Aaron Purcell

Got the maiden out of the way first up with a dominant win at Casterton before closing well last start at Flemington after a wide run. Finished a close second to Elliptical last prep which ties in well here and gets the blinkers on for the first time. Not the worst.

17e. Angry Skies (9) – $51
Jockey – N/A 57kg
Trainer – Ben & JD Hayes

Solid win on debut at Swan Hill before another good effort in town last start. Definitely has good ability but this may be all too soon for him.

18e. Muramasa (6) – $61
Jockey – Daniel Moor 57kg
Trainer – Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young

Sprouted wings late to win on debut at Sale before making good late ground at the Valley last start, when the bias was against. Drawn to get a nice run and has proven he can run a strong mile. Can run a race at odds if he gains a start.

Final Word

The Blue Army (Godolphin) will be looking to go back-to-back in this year’s Caulfield Guineas with favourite, Golden Mile. He comes through the Golden Rose, the same path Anamoe took to victory 12 months ago, and looks mighty hard to beat off the back of his 1.6L defeat.

The Dan O’Sullivan trained, Berkeley Square, looks the main danger for mine and is the on top selection, after his brilliant victory in the Exford Plate last start. He will enjoy a soft run from the good draw and the mile looks a perfect stepping stone here.

Amenable chased home Aft Cabin in the Guineas Prelude last start and gets the blinkers on here for his grand final. Like Berkeley Square, he looks to have mile written all over him and will be closing hard the last furlong.

The best roughie in the race looks to be Sir Bailey. He will be ridden more forward from the low gate and should be strong over the 1600m. The Maher/Eustace stable is flying of late and jockey, Ethan Brown, has a good record in G1’s despite only being 23 years of age.
