2020 Caulfield Guineas Preview, Odds, & Tips

Thu 8th October 2020

This is a bumper crop of three-year-olds and it looks to be one of the more competitive Caulfield Guineas (1600m) we’ve had in recent times. Let’s take a look at each runner in this star-studded field.

1 – Tagaloa – $6 ??

Drawn well in barrier 3 and should be able to box seat behind Crosshaven and possibly Captain Corelli. Ran well in the McNeil Stakes and was thrown in the deep end against the A-graders in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. Will be in this a long way, does he have the x factor and ability to run out the mile against some of these others?

2 – King’s Legacy – $7 ??

Had a barrier trial in the Run To The Rose and hit the line strongly in the Golden Rose, this looks a far better setup now at the mile and third up. Tough to knock, may just be running into a few with a bit more class.

3 – Ole Kirk – $3.40 ???

How good was the Golden Rose win? Deserving favourite here though is probably short enough at the current quote. Has already proven himself at the mile, and is certainly the one to beat. Pike is the only query, though it is the sort of horse he has had success with.

4 – Mamaragan – $41

Hasn’t quite looked up to it so far this preparation. The mile should suit but will need to improve lengths to challenge.

5 – Glenfiddich

Scratched

6 – Crosshaven – $11

It’s tough to knock him, has won two in a row against the Melbourne boys but has had the races run to suit him and will need to find another level to make it a hattrick of wins. Will get to the front and make his own luck, that’s for sure.

7 – Amish Boy – $19

May be back, buried, and riding for luck from the inside gate. Hasn’t done much wrong in his last few runs but this looks a tough setup.

8 – Lunar Fox – $61

Looks ready to peak but will need to show sharp improvement.

9 – Mo’unga – $7 ???

Genuine x factor about this undefeated Waller colt. Has looked special so far and may well just come out and smash this field at a very nice price. Hasn’t yet run against the A-graders, so this will be his biggest test, but should stay out of trouble, eat up the mile, and be very tough to beat.

10 – Aysar – $21 ?

Definitely has talent but will need to step up again, could snag a place if everything goes right.

11 – Cambourne – $14 ??

Looks to have bags of ability, winning his first two career starts in impressive fashion and making ground late after getting too far out of the race during the Caulfield Guineas Prelude last start. Probably the best chance of the Victorian brigade, and must go in all exotics at the price.

12 – National Choice – $51

Should roll forward and make his own luck, but will need to improve massively.

13 – Grandslam – $61

Not here.

14 – Poland – $51

Not in this.

15 – Captain Corelli – $61

Has a nice draw and should sit fairly forward in run, but would need everything going right to hold on for a place.

Tip: 3-9-2-11

? = Must Watch
? = Big Winning Chance
?= Worth Including in Exotics

From Muswellbrook to the Melbourne Cup, Will is mad about all things racing and sport. Spent countless hours in the backyard as a child pretending to be Glenn McGrath, and has been known to get deadly late swing with a taped tennis ball.
