2023 Ranvet Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The second of five Group 1’s at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday kicks off over 2000m, with the running of the $1m Ranvet Stakes. Whilst only eight runners are set to go head-to-head in the time-honoured weight-for-age feature, there are a host of different form lines, both local and international, to assess, making it an intriguing contest.

Looking at the market, Dabble has last year’s Melbourne Cup winner, Gold Trip, favourite at $4.00, just ahead of Mo’unga at $4.20 and both Dubai Honour and Hinged at $4.40. Montefilia is also given a hope and is currently $8.00.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and as the market suggests, it looks a tough little race for punters. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2023 Ranvet Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Gold Trip (8) – $4.00F
Jockey – Mark Zahra 59kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Finished second in last year’s Caulfield Cup, before having no luck in the Cox Plate and taking out the Melbourne Cup. Resumed in very good style at Sandown three weeks ago, when running Steinem to 0.3L over 1800m. Ran well at his only go at here Rosehill and is a winner second up. Looks hard to beat.

2. Mo’unga (6) – $4.20
Jockey – Nash Rawiller 59kg
Trainer – Annabel Neasham

Covered ground and was good first up in the Apollo Stakes before again chasing Anamoe home into third place last time out. Is unbeaten here at Rosehill and is a Group 1 winner this track/ trip. Racing consistently well at the highest level and no reason he won’t do the same again here. One of the main hopes.

3. Dubai Honour (2) – $4.40
Jockey – Ryan Moore 59kg
Trainer – William Haggas

Newmarket-trained gelding who is having his first go in Australia. Recent form around Bay Bridge and Baaeed is strong and he’s a three time winner over ten furlongs. As always for international gallopers, a market watch is advised, but on form alone has to be given a winning hope.

4. Raise You (4) – $18
Jockey – John Allen 59kg
Trainer – Joseph O’Brien

Irish-trained galloper who is also having his first go down under. Finished midfield in the Irish St Leger last start at Curragh, which is strong enough form for any race around the world. Is a three time winner fresh and has won over 2000m. Ticks plenty of boxes if he puts his best foot forward.

5. Bankers Choice (7) – $51
Jockey – Michael Dee 59kg
Trainer – Michael Moroney

Sound return in the Elms Handicap first up at Flemington before a fast finishing third behind Nonconformist last start. Steps up to 2000m third up here which suits and he gets that man, Michael Dee, in the saddle. Can get home hard and finish in the placings if there’s some tempo about early.

6. El Bodegon (3) – $18
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 58.5kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Former international who finished a close up third, at his first go in Australia, in last year’s Cox Plate. His two runs this prep in the Apollo Stakes and Chipping Norton have been just fair. He now gets to a trip which is suitable and gets blinkers on for the first time. Could be a big improver.

7. Montefilia (5) – $8.00
Jockey – Dylan Gibbons (a) 57kg
Trainer – David Payne

Talented mare who rattled home first up in the Chipping Norton Stakes. Caused a big boilover in this race last year when she destroyed Verry Elleegant and co. History suggests she goes well second up and off the strength of her fresh run, she has to be considered a big chance of making it back-to-back wins in this race.

8. Hinged (1) – $4.40
Jockey – James McDonald 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

On the quick back up here after finishing down the track in the Coolmore Classic last Saturday. She uncharacteristically got a long way back on that occasion and the run was far better than it reads on paper. Form prior around Anamoe was very good. Should get a good run on speed from the inside draw and certainly isn’t here to make up numbers. Big show.

Final Word

Despite only eight runners lining up here, it’s a rather fascinating contest. Speed on paper looks moderate, which could well suit those up on the bunny.

Mo’unga has returned in good order this preparation, finishing just 1.4L behind Anamoe in both the Apollo Stakes and Chipping Norton last start. The step up to 2000m looks ideal and he shouldn’t be too far away in the run. He’s unbeaten here at Rosehill and feel he can keep that record in-tact here.

If you read the form guide alone, you’d probably be wondering why Hinged is so well respected in the market after her last effort. As mentioned above, her run in the Coolmore Classic was far better than it appears on paper and her prior form behind Anamoe was good. She’ll roll forward from the inside gate and take plenty of running down.

Melbourne Cup champ, Gold Trip, returned in good style, as did quality mare, Montefilia. Both will improve second up out to a more suitable trip and can easily give this a shake.

And respect has to be given to the international gallopers, Dubai Honour and Raise You. Both bring quality form lines from their respective jurisdictions and will give strong accounts of themselves, providing they handle the Australian conditions.

2022 Ranvet Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

Held over 2000m at Rosehill, the Ranvet Stakes, originally known as the Rawson Stakes, is a G1 WFA race worth $700k, that was first run in 1902. Held on an action packed Golden Slipper day, the Ranvet winner will become exempt from ballot in the Tancred Stakes, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and Sydney Cup, all held at G1 level.

Last year’s Ranvet was taken out by eventual Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant, who is looking to go back to back in this year’s feature, and make it G1 win number 12. Looking at the market, Dabble has her deep in the red in the small 6 horse field, currently at $1.40, ahead of Montefilia at $5.50. Angel of Truth is currently $8.00, and Emissary is the only other winning chance according to the market, at $11.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen, and odds on favourites get beat day in day out. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Ranvet Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Angel of Truth (5) – $8.00
Jockey – William Pike 59kg
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes

Stuck on well first-up in the G1 Chipping Norton, where he finished 3rd to Verry Elleegant. He ran 3rd in this race last year, again behind Verry Ellegant, and will be looking to turn the tables here. He will roll forward and in the small field, should be competitive right to the wire.

2. Entente (6) – $26
Jockey – Tim Clark 59kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott 59kg

Two runs back this prep have been just fair in Listed company. His best form is over further, and although he should get a soft run on the speed, it’s hard to see him winning this.

3. Sikandarabad (1) – $61
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 59kg
Trainer – Sam Kavanagh

Rising 10YO who is still racing well in the top grade. His first up run in the G2 Apollo Stakes was good, where he finished alongside Verry Ellegant.  He finished midfield in the Canberra Mile last start. The step up to 2000m suits, but he may have his work cut out beating a couple of these home.

4. Emissary (3) – $11
Jockey – Mark Zahra 59kg
Trainer – Michael Moroney

Former UK galloper who resumed with a tidy effort in the G2 Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield, finishing 3rd behind Cascadian. He sat back on a slow tempo there, and was very strong through the line, suggesting the 2000m here will suit. Zahra sticks with him, and the in-form Moroney stable wouldn’t have him here unless he was spot on. Can run a big race.

5. Verry Elleegant (4) – $1.40F
Jockey – James McDonald 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Well, what can you say? 11 time G1 winning mare, who has won the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, and was brilliant last start winning the Chipping Norton. She completed the Chipping Norton x Ranvet double last year, and looks a big chance of repeating history again here. Punters are being asked to take a very short quote, but it looks about right in this field.

6. Montefilia (2) – $5.50
Jockey – Jason Collett 57kg
Trainer – David Payne

Looks the main danger on paper to favourite Verry Elleegant, after her good first-up run in the Chipping Norton Stakes. The step up to 2000m will suit her down to the ground, and if there’s any chink in the favourite’s armor, she is capable of taking advantage.

Final Word

Although this year’s Ranvet Stakes field is disappointingly small, there’s still plenty of quality about the race. Last year’s winner Verry Elleegant has a very strong hold on the market, and deservedly so, after her last start Chipping Norton win.

Now the winner of 11 Group 1’s, the daughter of Zed, no doubt fits into the elite class of thoroughbreds. If she is to be beaten here, it will come down to bad luck, or an extraordinary performance from one of her rivals.

Montefilia looks her biggest danger on paper. Her first-up run behind Verry Elleegant in the Chipping Norton was good, where she savaged the line late. The step up in trip suits, and she will be strong to the line here again.

Angel of Truth also ran a bold race in the Chipping Norton, and the small field may well play into his hands. He finished third in this race last year, and will have every opportunity to finish top three once again, and Melbourne visitor Emissary is not without a hope, after his solid first-up run. Although he is yet to win in Australia, his runs have been good and the stable is firing of late.

No prizes for guessing who the top selection is here. Verry Elleegant picks herself, but I do feel Montefilia is capable of making her earn it. Might pay to sit back and watch this one, or play the exotics with the top 4 in the market.

2021 Ranvet Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The rematch of two out and out superstars has scared away some would be competitors, with a field of just five set to fight it out in the 2021 Ranvet Stakes.

1 – Addeybb – $1.90 👀🏆💰

Came out here last autumn and won the Ranvet and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in thrilling fashion, and very may well do so again. An absolute star who notched a Group 1 win at Ascot against fellow champion Magical last start.

2 – Master Of Wine – $10 💰

If the two shorties fail or tire each other out, then this bloke looks the likely galloper to cause an upset. Promised the world last spring and didn’t deliver, and would need to pull a rabbit of a hat to win this.

3 – Prince Fawaz – $201

You could add another zero to the price and it’d be hard to get enthused. No.

4 – Verry Elleegant – $2.20 👀🏆💰

Stamped herself as an absolute star and has claims of being the best horse in the country, especially with Russian Camelot retiring. Won in a massive finish in the Chipping Norton Stakes over Colette and Avilius, and will need to reel off another huge effort to beat Addeyyb this time around. She won’t be bothered by the expected Heavy track, and it will be a great race to watch.

5 – Nettoyer – $41

Of course won the Doncaster at similar odds on a Heavy deck, but hasn’t done a whole lot since and lightning would have to strike twice here.
