Held over 2000m at Rosehill, the Ranvet Stakes, originally known as the Rawson Stakes, is a G1 WFA race worth $700k, that was first run in 1902. Held on an action packed Golden Slipper day, the Ranvet winner will become exempt from ballot in the Tancred Stakes, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and Sydney Cup, all held at G1 level.
Last year’s Ranvet was taken out by eventual Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant, who is looking to go back to back in this year’s feature, and make it G1 win number 12. Looking at the market, Dabble has her deep in the red in the small 6 horse field, currently at $1.40, ahead of Montefilia at $5.50. Angel of Truth is currently $8.00, and Emissary is the only other winning chance according to the market, at $11.
However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen, and odds on favourites get beat day in day out. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Ranvet Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Angel of Truth (5) – $8.00
Jockey – William Pike 59kg
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes
Stuck on well first-up in the G1 Chipping Norton, where he finished 3rd to Verry Elleegant. He ran 3rd in this race last year, again behind Verry Ellegant, and will be looking to turn the tables here. He will roll forward and in the small field, should be competitive right to the wire.
2. Entente (6) – $26
Jockey – Tim Clark 59kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott 59kg
Two runs back this prep have been just fair in Listed company. His best form is over further, and although he should get a soft run on the speed, it’s hard to see him winning this.
3. Sikandarabad (1) – $61
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 59kg
Trainer – Sam Kavanagh
Rising 10YO who is still racing well in the top grade. His first up run in the G2 Apollo Stakes was good, where he finished alongside Verry Ellegant. He finished midfield in the Canberra Mile last start. The step up to 2000m suits, but he may have his work cut out beating a couple of these home.
4. Emissary (3) – $11
Jockey – Mark Zahra 59kg
Trainer – Michael Moroney
Former UK galloper who resumed with a tidy effort in the G2 Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield, finishing 3rd behind Cascadian. He sat back on a slow tempo there, and was very strong through the line, suggesting the 2000m here will suit. Zahra sticks with him, and the in-form Moroney stable wouldn’t have him here unless he was spot on. Can run a big race.
5. Verry Elleegant (4) – $1.40F
Jockey – James McDonald 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller
Well, what can you say? 11 time G1 winning mare, who has won the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, and was brilliant last start winning the Chipping Norton. She completed the Chipping Norton x Ranvet double last year, and looks a big chance of repeating history again here. Punters are being asked to take a very short quote, but it looks about right in this field.
6. Montefilia (2) – $5.50
Jockey – Jason Collett 57kg
Trainer – David Payne
Looks the main danger on paper to favourite Verry Elleegant, after her good first-up run in the Chipping Norton Stakes. The step up to 2000m will suit her down to the ground, and if there’s any chink in the favourite’s armor, she is capable of taking advantage.
Final Word
Although this year’s Ranvet Stakes field is disappointingly small, there’s still plenty of quality about the race. Last year’s winner Verry Elleegant has a very strong hold on the market, and deservedly so, after her last start Chipping Norton win.

Now the winner of 11 Group 1’s, the daughter of Zed, no doubt fits into the elite class of thoroughbreds. If she is to be beaten here, it will come down to bad luck, or an extraordinary performance from one of her rivals.
Montefilia looks her biggest danger on paper. Her first-up run behind Verry Elleegant in the Chipping Norton was good, where she savaged the line late. The step up in trip suits, and she will be strong to the line here again.
Angel of Truth also ran a bold race in the Chipping Norton, and the small field may well play into his hands. He finished third in this race last year, and will have every opportunity to finish top three once again, and Melbourne visitor Emissary is not without a hope, after his solid first-up run. Although he is yet to win in Australia, his runs have been good and the stable is firing of late.
No prizes for guessing who the top selection is here. Verry Elleegant picks herself, but I do feel Montefilia is capable of making her earn it. Might pay to sit back and watch this one, or play the exotics with the top 4 in the market.
Best Ranvet Stakes Tip: 5. Verry Elleegant & 6. Montefilia – Quinella
