    Tancred Stakes Introduction

The Tancred Stakes is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in March. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 25th of March at Rosehill Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won by Duais.

Named after the former chairman of the Sydney Turf Club, Henry Eugene Tancred, the Tancred Stakes is a 2400m weight for age race run at Rosehill racecourse.

The Tancred Stakes has had a number of name changes throughout the years but is probably best known to punters as ‘The BMW’ who were major sponsors of the race between 1990 and 1995 and then again from 2002 to 2017.

It is the only 2400m weight for age race with Group 1 status in the country.

The 2022 edition of the Tancred Stakes was a little bit different to the others. The race was actually held at Newcastle Racecourse on the Monday after the scheduled time. This was because the meeting was called off at Rosehill Racecourse after the first three races, due to the heavy rain that Sydney had been experiencing in the lead up to the race.

    Tancred Stakes Betting 2023

There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on the Tancred Stakes. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Previous Tancred Stakes Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

The Group 1 Tancred Stakes is considered one of the jewels in the crown of the Autumn carnival.

It is the longest distance weight for age race that has Group 1 status in the country and as such generally attracts a strong field however with breeders opting for speed horses over stayers in this country.

Although, with a large number of promising three and four year old middle distance horses being sold to Asian interests, the race has lost some of its lustre in the past two decades. However with increases in prizemoney and some re-working of the Autumn Carnival, the race is enjoying a resurgence.

This is particularly evident by its two  recent winners Verry Elleegant who is still the dominant weight for age horse in this country, and the ill-fated Sir Dragonet, who came into the race as last season’s Cox Plate winner.

The second half of the late 90’s was no doubt the race’s greatest era with absolute champions of the turf Octagonal and Tie the Knot winning the race twice each, with Might and Power thrown in between.

Whether the race enjoys a renaissance to once again rival that period remains to be seen however it is trending in the right direction.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Tancred Stakes?

There have been 10 favourites have won the race since 2000 which is a higher than average number, however there have also been eight double figure odds winners in the same period including Curata Storm in 2001 ridden by Rodney Quinn who came out of a Class 1 win at Hawkesbury to salute in the Group 1 at $91.

    Formlines from Lead Up Races

The Australian Cup run over 2000m at weight for age in Melbourne, along with the Ranvet run in Sydney under the same conditions are the natural lead up races for the Tancred Stakes. The 2022 winner, Duais was the winner of the Australian Cup before winning here at the Tancred Stakes.

    Age

Horses that fall into the four and five year old age bracket have the best record in the race, including the 2022 winner, Duais.

    Weight

The race is run under weight for age conditions.

    Gender

The vast majority of winners have been male horses, particularly geldings, and as a general rule it takes an exceptional mare to win the race. Of the handful of mares to win the race in recent times, the list includes three of the all time greats in Ethereal, Makybe Diva, and Verry Elleegant. In 2022, it was 4YO mare, Duais, who beat out the competition to win the Tancred Stakes.

    Tancred Stakes Odds 2023

Well before the Tancred Stakes field is released – many Aussie bookies will open their early markets, or all-in markets, for Tancred Stakes betting. Many believe that this is the best time to bet on your horse, this is because you could find awesome (and high) odds for your horse.

Once the bookies release their 2022 Tancred Stakes odds, they will tend to fluctuate day-by-day. There are a few causes of this, but when we get a clear idea of the type of horses that will be targeting the Tancred Stakes, along with their recent form, you will see the odds change dramatically.

If you do opt for placing a bet in these early markets, it means you could find the favourite at double digit odds or more! So, if your chosen horse does go on to win, you will get more cash in your pocket. However, there is a lot more risk if you choose this option and you should be aware of what you are getting yourself into.

Depending on when you place your 2022 Tancred Stakes futures bet, your horse may not even get a run, but you also won’t get your funds back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are looking to have a bet when it says ‘Before Noms’, then you know you will get your cash back if your horse doesn’t run.

We do not know the odds for the Tancred Stakes in 2023, as they are yet to be released. Place check back again close to the date of the race.

    Tancred Stakes Field 2023

It was a small field of 11 runners, but that was cut down even further as there were two scratchings, Great House and Avion Fury. Despite this, majority of the runners that were left to contest the 2022 Tancred Stakes were of the highest quality.

While the field would have originally thought they would be going around at Rosehill Racecourse, like usual, this was no usual race. The Saturday meeting was cancelled after three races due to the heavy rain. The rest of the meeting was moved to the following Monday at Newcastle Racecourse.

Leading the way in the market was none other than Duais at odds of $2.90. She had very solid form coming into this race, including winning the Group 1 a couple of weeks ago, the Australian Cup. She had won both her previous races were she started as favourite, so this was a good sign for punters. She also knows what it takes to win at Group 1 level, with her record for these events at 5:2-1-0.

On the next line of betting we see Spanish Mission, who started at $4.00. He was coming off a decent run in the Group 1 Australian Cup, where he finished 3rd (obviously behind the favourite for this race Duais). He is yet to win at Group 1 level, but has three 3rd placings.

After Spanish Mission, it was Think It Over, at odds of $4.40. He was yet another horse that contested the Group 1 Australian Cup prior to this race, and he came in 2nd place during that race. He has previously won at Group 1 level, and has won 5 races so far this season.

    Tancred Stakes Results 2023

With the 2023 Tancred Stakes yet to be run and won, let’s have a look back at last year’s race to see if there are any key performance indicators that can help us find this year’s winner.

While we had to wait a couple of extra days to see the Tancred Stakes, it was certain worth it, especially for those who backed the favourite, as it was indeed Duais who was able to win by multiple lengths. Joshua Parr put in a great ride to get the 4YO from last place at the 400m all the way to first at the finishing post.

In second was Stockman, who finished 3.4L behind the winner. The 5Yo was right in the mix, and was in fact in 3rd place at the 400m mark, but couldn’t keep things going all the way to the end. Wrapping up the minor placing was The Chosen One, finishing 4.42L behind Duais. For all those first four bettors, it was Think It Over who finished in 4th place, 4.84L off the pace.
