In a hurry? We’ve listed all the quick facts that you need to know about the Northerly Stakes:
|Date||Saturday, 3rd December, 2022|
|Racecourse||Ascot Racecourse, WA, Australia|
The Northerly Stakes is a Group One race over 1,800m and is held at Ascot Racecourse. The Northerly Stakes is the final Group One of the Ascot Racing Carnival and also the final Group One of the calendar year.
Run under weight-for-age conditions for horses aged three or older, the Northerly Stakes has a $1,500,000 prizemoney pool. In 2022, the race will be run on Saturday, December 3th and was won by Regal Power in 2021.
In 2022, the race was changed from the Kingston Town Classic to the Northerly Stakes, with an additional $500,000 in prizemoney being announced as well, taking the total prizemoney of this Group 1 to $1,500,000.
Being the final Group One of both the calendar year and Ascot Racing Carnival, the Northerly Stakes and the $1.5M prizemoney pool attached to it attracts some of the best middle-distance stayers from WA and the eastern states.
With the Railway Stakes run two weeks earlier, you often see horses contest both races with the allure of the double on the forefront of minds of connections. Since the Northerly Stakes was brought on to the calendar in 1976, four horses have been able to complete the Railway/Northerly Stakes double, while four other horses have been able to win the Northerly Stakes on more than one occasion.
Kingston Town won the race in 1982 and was the reason it changed names to the Kingston Town Classic in 2007 (however now the name of this Group 1 has changed to the Northerly Stakes), being joined by Vo Rogue, Better Loosen Up and Arcadia Queen as some of the top line horses to win the race over the years.
The Northerly Stakes is an Australian Group One race held at Ascot Racecourse, is the last group one in the calendar year and brings some of the best horses from across the country to Perth, whilst also attracting many Aussies who like to have a casual punt. It is important to attempt to line up the local form vs the interstate form, with many runners never having crossed paths before. Being a weight-for-age event, it opens the door for talented three-year-olds carrying very small weights to win, as seen in the past two years.
With some of WA’s best horses put on display, whilst also attracting some of the best from across the country, it can be hard to find a winner in the Northerly Stakes. However, if you are after Northerly Stakes betting tips, we have found some key indicators that may help you place a winning bet on the main race.
Is Previous Form in the Northerly Stakes a Good Indicator of Future Success?
While just four horses have been able to win the Northerly Stakes more than once, since the first running in 1976, recent history shows that some horses can have repeat success without winning.
Since 2010, four horses have been able to finish in the top three more than once, with one of those winning twice. Playing God won the Northerly Stakes in both 2010 and 2011, highlighting that previous form can indicate success.
Lucky Gray won in 2012 before coming a narrow second in 2013, Perfect Reflection then followed a similar pattern by winning in 2015 and then coming second in the 2016, while Material Man finished second in both 2017 and 2018. Winning in 2021, Regal Power had not contested the Northerly Stakes before.
Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Northerly Stakes?
While five favourites have won the Northerly Stakes over the last 10 years, that number decreases to just one when looking at the last five years. Arcadia Queen won as $2.25 favourite in 2018 but the other five winners since 2016 have all been priced at $10 or higher.
This was including in 2021, where Regal Power won with a starting price of $14. The favourite, Western Empire, finished in second place, just 0.48L behind the winner.
Formlines Heading into the Northerly Stakes
Given the mix of genders, ages and racing homes of winners over the years, there are no clear form lines that indicate success in the Northerly Stakes. Both Truly Great (2020) and Pounamu (2017) contested the Railway Stakes two weeks earlier but neither finished in the top five of that race.
With Arcadia Queen (2018) and Kay Cee (2017) winning as three-year-old fillies in their respective year, they had a very similar path and may be one to look out for in this year’s main event. Both contested the Northerly Stakes fifth up and ran in the G2 WA Guineas, G3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes and listed Burgess Queen Stakes in their three runs prior. Regal Power (2021) had a 4 week freshen up before tackling this Group 1, he came 4th in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes.
There has definitely been a large mix of ages to win the Northerly Stakes however three-year-olds have had the most success over recent years. Horses aged three have won four of the last 10, three of the last six and two of the last three, with Kay Cee being the most recent, in 2019. Horses aged five-years-old are next with three wins over the last 10 years, most recently Truly Great in 2021. Regal Power won as a six-year-old.
Here is a table indicating the ages of winners of the Northerly Stakes since the 2011 edition:
|Age||# of Wins|
Given the weight-for-age conditions of the race, there have been some clear weights that have dominance in the Northerly Stakes. Horses carrying 59kg have crossed the line first in five of the last 10 years while there have been three three-year-old fillies tasked with carrying 50kg that have won.
Much like the weight, geldings have a clear advantage over all other runners in the race, having five of the last 10 winners. Fillies are a close second, having three winners over that time while there have been two entires cross the line first. Regal Power, a gelding, one the Group 1 in 2021.
Based on our data that we have analysed so far, your Northerly Stakes best bet is to look for either a 5+ year-old gelding or a three-year-old filly that is running fifth up in the Northerly Stakes. Even if there is a clear favourite, it may be best to bet around them as just one horse priced under $10 has won over the last five years.
Our Northerly Stakes best bets for 2021 are not out just yet, make sure you keep an eye out on this page as we will provide more details about our best bets when the final field is announced.

Long before the Northerly Stakes field is officially announced – online bookies will open early markets, or all-in markets, for Northerly Stakes betting. This is prime time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on strong contenders for the 2022 Northerly Stakes at double-digit odds.
Once the bookies release the 2022 Northerly Stakes odds, they will obviously fluctuate frequently in the lead up to the race, especially when we have a better idea of which horses will be targeting the race and their form leading into the race.
Punting early on these markets can find you a favourite at prices of $10 or more, which will retain you a much higher return on investment. However, there is increased risk with doing this and you should be well aware.
Depending on when you place a futures bet on the 2022 Northerly Stakes, your horse may not even run but you won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are betting when it says ‘Before Noms’, you have the security of receiving your money back if your horse doesn’t run.
Unfortunately, the Northerly Stakes betting odds are yet to be released, but you can rest easy knowing that we will provide them for you as soon as they are released!
Many runners looking to go up in distance come from the Group 1 Railway Stakes, held two weeks prior over the mile. As is the case with the other Group 1 events in the Perth Carnival, the increase in prizemoney has attracted runners from the eastern states to target these races after their Spring campaigns in Melbourne or Sydney. The final Northerly Stakes field will be announced at the barrier draw, which is set to take place on Wednesday, December 1st.
With the race yet to be run, we still don’t know what the Northerly Stakes results for 2022 will be! However, check back in after the race and we will have all of the information on how the big race went and what the results are.
Looking back at the 2021 race, Regal Power had a lot of work to do in the final part of the race, as he was 10th (out of 10 runners) at both the 800m and 400m mark. Regal Power had to fight off the favourite, Western Empire, who was 3rd at the 400m mark, and ended up finishing second, by about half a length.
This one-two finish made for a highly successful day out for trainers Grant & Alana Williams, as they trained both horses. Kissonallforcheeks finished in third place, 0.9L off the lead, after being back in 9th place at the 400m mark. Too Close To The Sun was first at the 800m and 400m mark, but could only hold on to 4th.
