The TAB Trophy is a 1700m race held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. The handicap has a prize pool of $125,000 and in 2020 will be run on Tuesday, November 3, which is Melbourne Cup Day.
Sure Knee raced to victory for the Chris Waller stable in the 2019 edition of the TAB Trophy, with Aliferous and Extreme Pride placing second and third respectively. Top weight Etana finished 10th, while favourite One More Try ran seventh. After winning the race, Sure Knee raced once more in spring, finishing third in a Benchmark 84 Handicap at Moonee Valley.
The TAB Trophy victory was one of three for Chris Waller on Melbourne Cup day, with his other two coming through Shared Ambition and Yulong Prince. His best runner in the Cup itself was Finche, who had high hopes coming into the race but ran seventh, 1.7 lengths behind winner Vow And Declare.
2019 winner Sure Knee clocked 1:43.44 to salute for her backers in the TAB Trophy. The time was a fair way off Niconoise’s 1700m Flemington track record, which stands at 1:40.83.
