Overwhelmed?

We'll message you the best tips for today!

We have studied the form from all races across the country for Wednesday, August 17, and provided our best horse racing tips.

It takes just the slightest whiff of pollen in the air for race fans to pick up the bit after a long Winter, and even though this seemingly stock standard midweek meeting might look skinny at first glance, dig a little deeper, and it certainly does have a Spring feel to it.

We have headed to inner-western Sydney’s workhorse track of Canterbury in NSW, Cranbourne on the outskirts of greater Melbourne in Victoria, and west of Brisbane to Ipswich for our top five bets this week. Two, perhaps even three of which I think we will be seeing more of as we head toward the Spring carnival.

We have made five selections in total and are confident that we have found you some winners! So, read on below to find our best horse racing tips for this Wednesday, August 17.

Cranbourne, Race 1 – 3. Cisalpine ($2.90)

Definitely not the most spectacular race you’ll find in Melbourne this week, but he does look one of the better bets on a skinny and lightly supported midweek card.

Always a fan of backing horses in these types of races that are lightly raced and having their first go out in trip as opposed to those that have tried and failed in the past.

This bloke ticks that box. He has improved with every run. He’s out of a son of Sadler’s Wells, Toronado, who has a handy record with middle distance types and runners on wet tracks. And I probably should mention he’s trained by Chris Waller and will be ridden by Craig Williams.

Looks a thin race and he does look about the only one with upside beyond this.

Ipswich, Race 2 – 1. Aban ($1.70)

He’s certainly been stamped by his sire this fellow.

Looks and races every bit like a Savabeel, with the added benefit of being out of an O’Reilly mare who always value add plenty of scope to their progeny.

Good effort on debut when looked to lead throughout before being claimed late.

There’s a little bit of form shaping up around that race. On pedigree he is sure to thrive with the step out to 1350m and further. Fitter for the first up run and was sharp enough to lead them up over 1200m which translates well going up in trip onto a tighter circuit.

Maloney and Van Dyke form a formidable combo and this looks like another one for the win column.

Canterbury, Race 1 – 11. Sports Legend ($5.00/$1.90)

Ended up the meat in the sandwich as the machines opened when well supported on debut.

Back last on account of that where he never settled and never looked happy on the heavy going along the rail. Hooked deepest turning for home and he let down in good style recording the fastest last 600m of the entire card, and was one of just two horses to break 38 on the day which is fairly impressive for a horse on debut who did plenty wrong in transit.

McEvoy takes over from the apprentice rider, the rail goes back into the true from the +8m position it was in when he last raced here last. Steps to 1200m and should get a surface back in the slow range.

Expect they’ll keep him out of trouble early and he will storm over the top of them late.

Canterbury, Race 2 – 2. Ithadtobezou ($6.00/$2.15)

Would have been really keen on her if she had drawn better however she does get Bowman, and does have a nice turn of foot.

I’ve really liked her two runs to date. The 1200m just found her out on debut where she was in the race for a long way. Then she was three deep the trip and never got around the corner on the Randwick inside track, which can be forgiven as it is a tricky circuit and she had nothing to take her into the race.

I think the winner out of that, Airman, is pretty handy, and the third horse, whilst proving enigmatic, does have its share of ability even though it is yet to put it together.

She deserves an each way ticket in an open affair where she’ll need luck but does have a pretty good pilot.

Cranbourne, Race 4 – 5. Botany ($3.90/$1.95)

Goes pretty good this!

Arguably should have been undefeated, then again you could also say it was lucky to win just the one race given the rides it has copped and it is worth noting L Nolen takes over from the apprentice here.

Had no business winning on debut, then they went back from the bad draw obviously looking for a patient ride when they forayed into town at just start number two.

Lost track with them before being asked to improve too early only to run up the back of them well before she should have been presented and went to the line evenly in a total forgive run/ride.

She is bred to be better the further they go being out of a U.S Triple Crown winner but she is good enough to win here first up and could be a serious Spring filly.
