We have studied the form from all races across the country for Saturday, December 17, and provided our best horse racing tips.
A really strong card across the country in what is not traditionally a peak racing period.
I’m sure nobody needs reminding at this point that the fat man is due down the chimney any day now and this could well be one of the last opportunities to upscale your gift giving and make a real impression on your loved ones on Christmas morning.
A strong feature meeting at Eagle Farm provides us with a number of opportunities but none more so than the hot-pot in the Listed Gold Edition Plate for 3YO’s.
We’ve found an underrated and overpriced galloper in the Midway at Royal Randwick for our best roughie of the day, whilst we head to Melbourne’s racing HQ of Flemington for our two best plays of the day.
We have made five selections in total and are confident that we have found you some winners! So, read on below to find our best horse racing tips for this Saturday, December 17.
Randwick, Race 3 – 15. Slickman ($34/$7.50)
*This horse has since been scratched.*
Freakish maiden winner on debut, then copped a few average rides and some wet tracks to round out a prep that promised a lot.
Produced a really smart return, carving out sharp sectionals late, to storm into the placings from an impossible position at the top of the straight.
He’s been scratched twice since then at the provincials, and instead they head to town on a Saturday for a Midway.
Doesn’t draw great, but gets back and runs on, so Randwick suits. Stays at 1200m 2nd up in a big field with plenty of tempo. And gets the services of just about the best rider in the country at 52kg.
He is well and truly up to this grade on ability, and you have to respect the stable who have a long history of placing their horses well and only coming to town when they think they can run in the money.
Way over the odds at present, until the astute video watchers find him. Grab it while you can. He’s the best roughie of the day.

Flemington, Race 3 – 7. Pounding ($3.40)
Quickened nicely back on the dry, hitting the front at the 200m before the smart Detonator Jack sailed past him.
3L’s back to third there. Stays at a mile here, on a seven day back up.
A repeat of last week’s effort will see him beating this lot.

Eagle Farm, Race 5 – 1. Kovalica ($1.60)
Certainly short enough but he should just be winning.
He looks one of the more exciting prospects amongst the horses in work at this time of year.
The Godolphin runner, Tradition, is no slouch but it was literally a Hurdler’s Flat race when he won his maiden, and then got all the favours in a small field at the Canterbury night meet second up.
He will make him earn it, but I think the top weight is considerably more brilliant on what we’ve seen so far, and he’s still very much untapped.
Great mover, who does everything right in his races. He has a huge future beyond this.

Flemington, Race 7 – 6. Rose Quartz ($2.50)
We let her go around first up at nice odds, and nearly got stung, so we won’t be missing her second up.
Really talented mare who was a touch disappointing at the back end of her last campaign, so we were entitled to just want to see her put her best foot forward this time in. She did that, and then some when resuming, attacking the line strongly late after being snagged back from the bad draw.
Seems to do her best work on the dry, as well as early on in her prep. And has a great record down the straight at Flemington.
Looks to be back on track which will see her winning this.

Eagle Farm, Race 8 – 4. Golden Boom ($1.90)
Exciting race with plenty of nice upcoming types, but none more so than this Spirit of Boom gelding from the Gollan yard.
He’s been simply dominant in his two starts to date, cruising to the front on both occasions before extending his lead in the run home.
A stack of speed in this, he has the pace to lead or he might just camp one off them from the draw but expect he’ll prove too strong once they straighten up.
Stablemate Spiritualised beat a couple of handy gallopers when stringing back to back wins together last prep, but you would be inclined to think he might need one more off his first up effort.
Smart colt Steady Ready was super impressive when resuming on the Gold Coast against older horses but I think the form through the 3YO races is a better reference, and he does have a tendency to dwell off the start which could prove costly in a hot race like this.
One of the highlights of the day, but the favourite will be too good.
