The VRC Springtime Stakes is a Listed 1400m race for three-year-olds that is held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. The handicap has a prize pool of $150,000 and in 2020 will be run on Saturday, November 7, which is Mackinnon Stakes day.

Banquo won the VRC Springtime Stakes in 2019 for trainer Danny O’Brien. Dwayne Dunn rode Sophia’s Choice to second place and Regimental Band finished third. After claiming victory, Banquo went on to finish fourth in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas.

Some strong horses have won the VRC Springtime Stakes over the years, including Dothraki (2013) and Palentino (2015). Both horses amassed over $1 million in prizemoney, with Palentino winning multiple Group 1s.

No trainer or jockey has quite been able to establish a stranglehold on the VRC Springtime Stakes, however, Mick Price did train back-to-back winners in the early 2010s. He won with Instinction in 2011 and followed it by training Eximius to victory in 2012.

Banquo clocked 1:24.09 to cross the line first in the 2019 VRC Springtime Stakes, however, the time was well short of the best the race has seen over the last 20 years. That honour belongs to Cool Azz, who ran 1:21.55 to win in 2002.
