Before becoming a race for three-year-olds, the Blue Sapphire Stakes was run for two-year-olds. In 2016 it was classed as a Group 3, having previously been graded as a Listed race.

The Blue Sapphire Stakes was actually the first Listed race that superstar Black Caviar ever won. She cruised home as a two-year-old, beating the rest of the field by over six lengths.

David Hayes has had decent success in the Blue Sapphire Stakes in recent years, training two winners in the last five runnings of the race. Jockey Damian Lane has had the same level of success, claiming victory in 2019 onboard Anaheed and in 2015 while riding Keen Array.
