Before the official William Reid Stakes field is released, many online bookmakers will open early markets, or all-in markets, for all your William Reid Stakes betting needs. We like to think this is the best time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on one of the favourites for the 2023 William Reid Stakes at great odds.
Once the bookies release their 2023 William Reid Stakes odds, they will tend to fluctuate pretty much day-by-day in the lead up to the all important race. The fluctuations also occur when we get a better idea of the type of horses that will be targeting the William Reid Stakes, as well as their recent form in other races as well as trials.
If you do choose to have a bet on these early markets, it means you could find the favourite at a great price of $10 or more. This means that if your chosen horse does go on to win, you will get more cash in your account! However, there is increased risk if you choose to go down this path and you need to be aware before putting any of your money down.
Depending on the time you place your 2023 William Reid Stakes futures bet, your horse may not even run, but you also won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the race day. If you are punting when it says ‘Before Noms’, then you can rest easy knowing you will get your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

There was a very decent field that contested the 2022 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley Racecourse. Marabi started as the red hot favourite for this Group 1 race. The mare was coming off a string of 1st place finishes and her record for the season stood at 4:4-0-0, which included a Group 1 win in her last start at the Oakleigh Plate.
Due to the fact that Marabi was so short, the rest of the runners in the race were at double digit odds, but there were still a stack of quality horses, which meant there was value to be found! At the next shortest odds were The Inferno and The Astrologist, both at $13.
The Inferno was unfortunately scratched before the race, but The Astrologist did line up at the barriers for the William Reid Stakes. He had just run a very respectable 2nd place in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap and had a season record of 5:1-1-2.
With the 2023 William Reid Stakes yet to be run and won, let’s take a look at the 2022 rendition of the race to see if there are any key form indicators that can help us find this year’s winner.
Well, well, well another case of the short priced favourite being rolled! Marabi was the $1.65 favourite and just didn’t have enough in the tank to push on toward the end of the race to get the win. Ridden by Ben Allen, the 5YO finished back in 5th place, 2.25L off the pace.
With such a short price favourite, it meant that all the other runners were priced at double digit odds, and it was in fact September Run who proved too good for the rest of the field, winning at odds of $17. Jockey Craig Williams put in a peach of a ride to get the mare home after being in 6th place at the 400m mark.
Next to cross the line was, Halvorsen, who had overcome a wide barrier (13) and long odds to finished just 1L behind September Run. the 6YO had odds of $81 before the barriers flung open and was back in 10th place at the 400m mark.
Rounding out the minor placings was General Beau, who had odds of $26 before the race. Damien Thornton was able to steer the 3YO to finish just 1.3L behind the winner, and he was back in 7th place at the 400m mark.
