    William Reid Stakes Introduction

The William Reid Stakes is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in March. The race in 2023 will be held on Friday 24th of March at Moonee Valley Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won by September Run.

The William Reid Stakes is run under weight for age conditions and is open to horses three year old and upwards.

The race is named after former Moonee Valley Racing Club committee member William Reid who along with serving on the board of the MVRC, he was also a prominent horse owner in his own right with his best horse being Uncle Sam who won the Caulfield Cup twice in 1912 and again in 1914.

The race had its inception in 1925 and kept its name until 1993 where it was for known first as the Australia Made Stakes and then the Australia Stakes until 2009 before reverting to its original title in 2010.

The race has always been run at Moonee Valley over 6 furlongs or 1200m and has only had the one venue change due to course reconstruction.

The William Reid Stakes was elevated to Group 1 status in 1987.

    William Reid Stakes Betting 2023

There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on the William Reid Stakes. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Previous William Reid Stakes Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

The race is best known as one of the many sprint races the great Manikato was able to dominate in. He won it on five consecutive occasions between 1979 and 1983.

Black Caviar is another who won the race on more than one occasion, claiming the Group 1 feature twice during her unbeaten run, first in 2011, then again in 2013.

Being positioned in the peak of the Autumn Carnival period, the William Reid Stakes generally attracts a very strong field of race fit, top line sprinters and many of the race’s winners head to Sydney for races like the T.J. Smith and the All Aged Stakes where they have tasted success as well as winning Group 1 sprint features the following Spring.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the William Reid Stakes?

Favourites have a respectable strike rate in the race winning five times since 2006.

    Formlines from Lead Up Races

The vast majority of winners of the William Reid Stakes have run top three at their most recent start with horses coming through the Melbourne triple crown series which includes the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, the Oakleigh Plate, and the Newmarket Handicap. The 2022 William Reid Stakes winner, September Run, had most recently finished in 3rd place in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap.

    Age

As is the case with many of our Group 1 sprint races, three year olds have excellent records against the older horses. In this instance they have won 13 of the past 37 runnings of the William Reid Stakes.

    Gender

The girls have a very strong record here having won around 50% of the races over the last three decades. Amongst these names are champion sprinters, Miss Andretti, Black Caviar and Sunlight.

    William Reid Stakes Odds 2023

Before the official William Reid Stakes field is released, many online bookmakers will open early markets, or all-in markets, for all your William Reid Stakes betting needs. We like to think this is the best time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on one of the favourites for the 2023 William Reid Stakes at great odds.

Once the bookies release their 2023 William Reid Stakes odds, they will tend to fluctuate pretty much day-by-day in the lead up to the all important race. The fluctuations also occur when we get a better idea of the type of horses that will be targeting the William Reid Stakes, as well as their recent form in other races as well as trials.

If you do choose to have a bet on these early markets, it means you could find the favourite at a great price of $10 or more. This means that if your chosen horse does go on to win, you will get more cash in your account! However, there is increased risk if you choose to go down this path and you need to be aware before putting any of your money down.

Depending on the time you place your 2023 William Reid Stakes futures bet, your horse may not even run, but you also won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the race day. If you are punting when it says ‘Before Noms’, then you can rest easy knowing you will get your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

The odds are not available just yet for the William Reid Stakes in 2023, stay tuned!

    William Reid Stakes Field 2023

There was a very decent field that contested the 2022 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley Racecourse. Marabi started as the red hot favourite for this Group 1 race. The mare was coming off a string of 1st place finishes and her record for the season stood at 4:4-0-0, which included a Group 1 win in her last start at the Oakleigh Plate.

Due to the fact that Marabi was so short, the rest of the runners in the race were at double digit odds, but there were still a stack of quality horses, which meant there was value to be found! At the next shortest odds were The Inferno and The Astrologist, both at $13.

The Inferno was unfortunately scratched before the race, but The Astrologist did line up at the barriers for the William Reid Stakes. He had just run a very respectable 2nd place in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap and had a season record of 5:1-1-2

With the 2023 William Reid Stakes field yet to be determined, let’s take a look back at the 2022 field, headlined by winner September Run:

    William Reid Stakes Results 2023

With the 2023 William Reid Stakes yet to be run and won, let’s take a look at the 2022 rendition of the race to see if there are any key form indicators that can help us find this year’s winner.

Well, well, well another case of the short priced favourite being rolled! Marabi was the $1.65 favourite and just didn’t have enough in the tank to push on toward the end of the race to get the win. Ridden by Ben Allen, the 5YO finished back in 5th place, 2.25L off the pace.

With such a short price favourite, it meant that all the other runners were priced at double digit odds, and it was in fact September Run who proved too good for the rest of the field, winning at odds of $17. Jockey Craig Williams put in a peach of a ride to get the mare home after being in 6th place at the 400m mark.

Next to cross the line was, Halvorsen, who had overcome a wide barrier (13) and long odds to finished just 1L behind September Run. the 6YO had odds of $81 before the barriers flung open and was back in 10th place at the 400m mark.

Rounding out the minor placings was General Beau, who had odds of $26 before the race. Damien Thornton was able to steer the 3YO to finish just 1.3L behind the winner, and he was back in 7th place at the 400m mark.
