    All Aged Stakes Introduction

The All Aged Stakes is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in April. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 15th of April at Randwick Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won by Cascadian.

As the name suggests, the race is open to registered thoroughbreds of ‘All Ages’. It has a long history in the Australian racing calendar having first been run in 1885 and it has always been run at Royal Randwick. Originally run as a mile race, it is now run over 1400m and on the final day of the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

The race traditionally attracts a high level of horses who come together out of sprint races like the TJ Smith, or mile races like the Doncaster Handicap.

The winner’s list is testament to the quality it attracts with some of the Australian turf’s all time greats featuring on repeat occasions in the honour roll. These include Carbine, Ajax, Rough Habit and Sunline, whilst many multiple Group 1 winners such as Intergaze, Private Steer, All Too Hard, and Tofane are amongst the winners in the modern era.

    All Aged Stakes Betting 2023

There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on the All Aged Stakes. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Previous All Aged Stakes Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Being at the tail end of the Autumn carnival, the All Aged Stakes can quite often be the final appearance for horses headed off to stud in time for the Spring, such as the case with Pierata in 2019.

That aside, it is generally a good guide for future top line success should the horses be of age to continue racing.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the All Aged Stakes?

Whilst favourites don’t have an over representation in the recent winner’s list, all of the winners from the last decade or so have been $10 or shorter, barring Cascadian (2022) and  Tofane (2020) who both had a starting price of $12.

    Formlines from Lead Up Races

The majority of recent winners are sprinters stretching out to the 1400m after competing in The Galaxy and the TJ Smith, with a smaller number coming back in trip from races like the George Ryder or the Doncaster Handicap, like 2022 winner Cascadian who contested the Doncaster in his last start.

    Age

Three year olds have a forty percent win rate over the past decade. Whereas, in 2022 it was 7YO Cascadian who won the All Aged Stakes.

    Weight

The race is run under weight for age conditions.

    Gender

Whilst predominantly won by colts and geldings, nine fillies and mares have won the race since 2000.

    All Aged Stakes Odds 2023

Well before the All Aged Stakes field is released – many Aussie bookmakers will open early markets, or all-in markets, for All Aged Stakes betting. This is believed to be the best time to bet on your chosen horse because you might be able to get really great odds.

Once the bookies release their 2023 All Aged Stakes odds, they will tend to change regularly. There are a number of things that cause this, but when we get a better idea of the quality of horses that will be aiming for the All Aged Stakes, as well as their recent form, this is when you will see the odds change dramatically.

If you do end up choosing to place bets in these early markets, it means you could find the favourite at double digit odds or greater. So, if your horse does get the win, you will see a higher return on your bet! However, there is added risk if you choose this option and you should be aware of this.

Depending on when you place your 2023 All Aged Stakes futures bet, your horse may not run in the race, but you also won’t get your money back, this occurs when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are looking to have a bet when it says ‘Before Noms’, then you can rest easy knowing you’ll receive your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

The 2023 All Aged Stakes odds are not released yet. Please be sure to check back closer to the time of the race.

    All Aged Stakes Field 2023

It was a jam packed quality field for the 2022 All Aged Stakes. In total there were 17 runners announced in the final field (including 3 emergencies), however there was 1 scratching, therefore first emergency, Overpass, got a run in the Group 1. So, with a total off 14 runners we were certainly in for a good show.

Forbidden Love was the $4.60 favourite before the race, and for good reason too. The 4YO mare is already a multiple Group 1 winner, with a lot of experience (and success) on a heavy track. She came 4th in the Doncaster Mile, but before that she won the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes and Canterbury Stakes.

On the next line of betting we saw Mo’unga and In The Congo, both priced at $4.80. Mo’unga had most recently run a solid 2nd place in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes to Sierra Sue. He had only been tried on a Heavy track once before, but on that occasion he got the chocolates. Mo’unga is also a multiple Group 1 winner, with almost $2 million in prizemoney.

Alongside Mo’unga was the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt, In The Congo. He was coming off a 2nd in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint and before that a 3rd in the Group 1 The Galaxy (by just 0.5L).

    All Aged Stakes Results 2023

With the 2023 All Aged Stakes yet to be run and won, let’s have a look at the 2022 rendition of the race to see if there are any key performance indicators that can help us find this year’s winner.

There were only three runners (out of 14) that were even given a chance in the eyes of the punters, as only Forbidden Love, Mo’unga and In The Congo were the only runners priced under double digit odds. Despite being price under $10, none of the above three runners even finished in the top five.

In fact, it was $12 chance Cascadian that proved too good for the rest of the field. The James Cummings trained Cascadian was jostling around for positions, but once he was able to break free it was pretty much all over. He managed to come from 9th at the 400m to cross the line first.

In second place was Tofane, as the 6YO mare ended up finishing 0.92L behind the winner. She was running in 3rd place at both the 800m and 400m mark, and was looking strong until Cascadian steamed through. Wrapping up the minor placings was Ellsberg, who was a fairly distant 3.29L.
