So Si Bon Ready To Go Back-To-Back?

Enigmatic galloper So Si Bon is seeking to make it back-to-back wins in the $500,000 Ballarat Cup (2000m), after taking out the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) last week at Sandown.

Co-trainer Ben Hayes is optimistic that the son of So You Think can chalk up another win in Saturday’s feature.

“I hope he can, it would be the biggest thrill ever if he can,” Hayes said.

“He’s really come through the race really well, we’re very happy with him, I think barrier 1 for him is a great barrier.

“He’s a horse that I always say it we need to ride for luck and kind of trick him to the line and I think if he gets the right runs he’ll be travelling well and he’ll be hopefully finishing in the finish, he doesn’t often run a bad race.

“I think from barrier 1 he’ll be able to get that cover and he’ll be travelling into the bend and we’ll just need a bit of luck and if he gets it, he loves going in between horses.

“I don’t think the big weight will matter too much and he’ll hit the line well he’s a fit horse.”

The Lindsay Park team also have veteran Harlem lining up, as well as Furrion.

“I really think Harlem is going really well and he’s been racing well all spring and hopefully it’s his time,” Hayes added

“We’ve been really happy with him all spring, I think he’s really put up his runs, he ran really well in the Coongy.

“From that wide draw we might get a similar run, we’ll just see where we land.

“I’ve never seen a healthier and happier horse, he’s really been running well all prep and I think this will be a much easier race than last start when he ran into Arcadia Queen and Fifty Stars.

“He’s a tricky one he does like to settle in the first four and he is a horse that normally draws one or two, he’s been very lucky through his career, we’ve drawn a wide gate this time but it might not be a bad thing.

“I think So Si Bon he’ll probably be midfield, he often jumps quite well, so he’ll probably be midfield bit worse than midfield back.”

Scott’s Irish Flame to burn at Ballarat

Mornington trainer Brett Scott received the news he had been waiting for when he found out his in-form galloper Irish Flame had gained a start in the Ballarat Cup.

Irish Flame was first emergency but secured a run when Power Scheme was scratched on Friday morning.

The former champion jumps jockey now has two ex-New Zealand gallopers in the race in Our Big Mike and Irish Flame.

Scott is pleased with the outcome as he regards Irish Flame as the best chance of his pair.

“The key to him is that he needs the race to be run at a good tempo and I’ve got one of the horses in the race, Our Big Mike, along with Inverloch, whose racing style is to go forward so that’s taken care of,” Scott said.

Scott said Irish Flame had been in great form over the spring and was still learning about racing.

He has won his past two starts at Moonee Valley and Flemington after consecutive seconds at Caulfield but Scott said with some luck he could have won both of those races.

In the first of those second placings, Irish Flame looked home but was run down by Saracen Knight close to the post.

“On that occasion, (jockey) Michael Walker said he wandered around and waited for the others,” Scott said.

“He said if Saracen Knight had raced up to him a bit earlier he would have fought back and held him off.”

At his next start at Caulfield, Irish Flame gave away too big a start to front runner Vegas Knight.

“After those runs Walker said to place the ear muffs on him and it’s made a big difference,” Scott said.

“I think he’s still learning about racing and getting better all the time.”

Irish Flame was trained in New Zealand by Scott’s great mate John Wheeler and connections sent him over without any grandiose plans.

“In his seven Australian starts he’s won around $215,000 so he’s more than paid his way and he’s only getting better with racing,” Scott said.

Irish Flame has the distinction of being the only horse sired by Zed to have won a Group race as a two-year-old.

Scott said Irish Flame handled firm tracks but needed time to recover from them and was a bit better on tracks with give in them.

With this in mind, the trainer will aim Irish Flame at the Easter carnival with the Sydney Cup his main goal.

He said Our Big Mike’s failure in the Kyneton Cup should be forgiven as he was given no peace in the lead.

However, Scott queried whether he had the class to win a race the calibre of the Ballarat Cup.

Odeon Set for Gold Rush in 2020 Ballarat Cup

Co-trainer Simon Zahra is bullish about Odeon’s chances in Saturday’s $500,000 2020 Ballarat Cup (2000m), with the camp targeting this race from a long way out.

At the back end of the spring, the 2000m event may be an afterthought for many of the bigger named runners in the field, but Odeon’s preparation has been geared towards peaking on Saturday in his grand final.

“He looks pretty well-weighted, he’s drawn to get a good run and three weeks in between runs is probably the key to him, so I wouldn’t swap him for any runner,” Zahra told racing.com.

“Half a million (prizemoney) probably invites a lot of people to hang on doesn’t it?

“It’s a good incentive for late carnival; obviously an afterthought for some, but it’s a race we have targeted.”

Odeon heads into Saturday’s contest in good form, just going down in both the Cranbourne Cup (2025m), and the Melbourne Cup Day Plate (1800m) behind the talented Purple Sector.

The camp will however have to deal with the suspension of regular rider Jamie Kah, with Daniel Moor set to take the mount with some specific instructions.

“She has got the key to him a bit … but Daniel has been doing a lot of riding for us and he just does as he’s told,” Zahra said.

“Riding him conservative is always the better option because if he gets there too soon, he puts the flag up and thinks he’s done his job.”

Odeon is currently a $12 chance in the 2020 Ballarat Cup.

O’Sullivan: Affair To Remember Can Be Hometown Hero

The 2020 Ballarat Cup (2000m) is in local trainer Dan O’Sullivan’s sights, with in-form mare Affair To Remember his lone hope in the $500,000 event.

The camp have booked star rider Mark Zahra for the job on Saturday, after regular hoop Michael Poy was unable to have his careless riding suspension overturned.

Poy piloted Affair To Remember to victory in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes on Stakes Day at Flemington.

“Michael had a really nice affinity with her and the owners wanted him to stay on but we’re very lucky to have a top-class jockey like Mark be able to take the ride,” O’Sullivan said.

“We’re definitely not there just to make up the numbers, I’m expecting her to run well.

“Group 1 winners like Kings Will Dream will be tough to take on but she meets them much better in the weights.

“She’ll definitely go to the paddock after this run and be set for the autumn, but she hasn’t trained off yet and has stayed at the level she was going into the Matriarch.

“I was happy with her work on Tuesday morning and it’s good to see that she’s stayed at that consistent level.

“She did a bit wrong at Flemington too, slow away again and laying in, she was having a mares day so I still think she can turn up and run to that level on Saturday for sure.”

O’Sullivan admitted that it would be a meaningful win if he was able to take out his hometown Ballarat Cup.

“It would mean a lot if she was able to win it,” he said.

“But her main target was the Matriarch, to get that Group 2 victory, and now she has there’s nothing to lose running this weekend, but the possibility of a lot to gain with half a million dollars on offer.”
