2022 Winterbottom Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The best sprinters in the west, along with some quality interstate gallopers, are set to sizzle on Saturday in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot. First run in 1952, the 1200m contest has been taken out by some champion sprinters including; Placid Ark (1987), Miss Andretti (2005), Takeover Target (2008) and Queensland iron horse, Buffering (2009 & 2011) and is now worth a staggering $1.5m in prize money.

Rothfire is currently at the top of betting for this year’s Winterbottom, following some solid Victorian G1 form and is $4.80 with Dabble. Last start The Hunter winner, Vilana, has been well supported and is next best at $6.00 along with local galloper, Elite Street. Vilana’s stablemate, Paulele, is also in contention at $10 and although others are $11 or better, the chances don’t stop there.

So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Winterbottom Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Rothfire (3) – $4.80F
Jockey – Damien Oliver 58.5kg
Trainer – Robert Heathcote

Tried hard but was no match behind Bella Nipotina in the Manikato two back, before finishing 1.2L from the winner in the Champions Sprint last start. Should get a good run on speed from the low draw here, and despite also being a G1, he should find this easier than recent outings. One of the main hopes.

2. Vilana (12) – $6.00
Jockey – Jamie Kah 58.5kg
Trainer – James Cummings

*This horse has since been scratched.*

Winner of two from three this prep including the Silver Eagle and The Hunter last start. Drops back to 1200m here and has to face the tight Ascot circuit for the first time, but has plenty of quality and displays a lethal turn of foot. If he gets any luck early from the wider draw, he will be hard to hold out late in the race.

3. Paulele (16) – $10
Jockey – Ben Melham 58.5kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Second of the blue army runners who hasn’t fared well from Tuesday’s barrier draw. Won well in the Schillaci three back before losing his way a bit at his last two runs. Needs to find on those recent efforts and will need some luck, but can’t be completely ruled out, as he’s one of the better performing sprinters in the field on his day. Take on trust.

4. Elite Street (7) – $6.00
Jockey – Brad Rawiller 58.5kg
Trainer – Daniel Morton

First of the local gallopers who resumed with a tidy effort in the Colonel Reeves first up here at Ascot. Won this race in 2020 and finished third last year. Has a brilliant second up record (5:4-0-0), will get a nice run from the good gate and will take plenty of holding out.

5. The Astrologist (2) – $11
Jockey – William Pike 58.5kg
Trainer – Leon & Troy Corstens

Gutsy sprinter who wasn’t far away last start in the Champions Sprint at Flemington. Looks the ideal horse to bring west for this race and will make his own luck on speed with Pike in the saddle. Gets plenty of ticks in the form guide and rarely runs a bad race. Each-way hope.

6. Massimo (11) – $34
Jockey – Brad Parnham 58.5kg
Trainer – Chris & Michael Gangemi

Led and fought gamely last start to hold out Karli’s Karma in the Lee Steere Stakes. Run prior behind Resortman was good. Drops back to 1200m here and will find this race tougher but has good stats around Ascot and isn’t the worst.

7. Red Can Man (17) – $21
Jockey – Shaun McGruddy 58.5kg
Trainer – Steve Wolfe

Resumed from a short freshen to finish a close second in the Colonel Reeves last start. He’s shown in previous preparations that he can match it with the top liners, including those in Victoria, but the outside barrier is a big negative in this race and he’ll need plenty of early luck.

8. Stageman (5) – $51
Jockey – Clint Johnston-Porter 58.5kg
Trainer – Adam Durrant

Rising nine year old who was ok to the line last start in the Lee Steere Stakes. Had no luck the start prior behind Miss Conteki. Not getting any younger and probably isn’t racing as well as he was twelve months, when he finished second in this race, but won’t spend a penny from the gate and can bob up in the placings at big odds.

9. Indian Pacific (15) – $51
Jockey – Paul Harvey 58.5kg
Trainer – Neville Parnham

Speedy customer who has led and held on well at his past couple over 1000m and 1100m. Steps up to a high pressure 1200m race now which isn’t ideal and he will be made to work early from the wide gate. Others make more appeal.

10. Beau Rossa (8) – $26
Jockey – Todd Pannell 58.5kg
Trainer – Will Clarken

South Australian visitor who ran well first up at Flemington behind Argentia. Has since had a trial at Belmont, where he finished off nicely behind Kementari. Todd Pannell flies over for the ride and he should be competitive here second up.

11. Hot Zed (6) – $71
Jockey – Jason Whiting 58.5kg
Trainer – Lou Luciani

Good win last start in BM78+ grade under the big weight. His run in the Crawford back in October was super behind Miss Conteki and he should land a good spot from the draw. Probably lacks the class of some of his rivals but is in good form and won’t be disgraced.

12. Kissonallforcheeks (14) – $26
Jockey – Chris Parnham 56.5kg
Trainer – Daniel Morton

Returns to WA after a stint in Victoria where she won at G2 and G3 level. Drops back to 1200m after a terrific effort in the Empire Rose last start. Will need a bit of luck from the sticky draw but will be saved for one run and should be charging late. Respect.

13. Miss Conteki (13) – $11
Jockey – Patrick Carbery 56.5kg
Trainer – Simon Miller

Smart mare who has a brilliant winning record. First two runs back this prep were nothing short of super and she had zero chance last start from the wide gate. The 1200m looks ideal now, she’s a ten time winner here at Ascot, and if she can slot into the three wide running line, will be very hard to hold out.

14. This’ll Testya (9) – $11
Jockey – Lucy Warwick 56.5kg
Trainer – Mitchell Pateman

Front running mare who has found a new lease of life since joining the Pateman yard. Just missed in the Crawford Stakes and Prince Of Wales before a solid win last start in the Colonel Reeves. Faces a big test now up to 1200m against this field, but will roll forward and look the winner at some stage in the straight. Last 100m the testing material.

15. Sniparoochy (1) – $26
Jockey – Jason Brown 56.5kg
Trainer – Stephen Miller

Consistent local sprinter who led them up and was far too good last Saturday in the Jungle Mist Classic. She beat a handy field on that occasion, and although this is much tougher, will camp on the speed and can run some blistering late sectionals. Worth including in exotics.

16. My Bella Mae (10) – $13
Jockey – Steven Parnham 51.5kg
Trainer – Dion Luciani

The lone three year old of the field who was sensational winning the Placid Ark last start here at Ascot. She ran a faster time than the 1MW and BM78+ on the same day and gets in light here with 51.5kg on her back. Hard to know whether or not she will measure up here, but can’t have done much more in her short career thus far. Respect.

17e. Titan Blinders (4) – $126
Jockey – Shaun O’Donnell 58.5kg
Trainer – Chris & Michael Gangemi

Former Victorian galloper who has raced well without winning here in WA. Drops back to 1200m here after three 1400m runs and might just find them a bit zippy for him.

Final Word

A quality lineup of sprinters will take to the track here in what looks a great edition of the Winterbottom Stakes. The early speed looks strong with the likes of Indian Pacific, This’ll Testya and Sniparoochy engaged and the track should race well with the rail out only three metres.

Going for a bit of value in the shape of The Astrologist. His form on paper heading into this is very strong around the likes of Private Eye, Argentia and Roch ‘N’ Horse, and he should enjoy a nice run just behind the speed from the low draw. He gets the ‘Wizard of the West’, William Pike, on his back and looks a good each-way play for punters.

Local galloper Elite Street and last start The Hunter winner, Vilana, look the main dangers. Elite Street was good first up over 1100m and looks well suited here up in trip. He has a brilliant record at the track and has won four from five second up. A few question marks surround Vilana, namely the drop back to 1200m and the tight Ascot circuit, but his class alone should carry him a long way.

Miss Conteki can’t be left out of calculations. Her first two runs back this prep were super, before a complete forget last start, where she drew wide and was given no chance from the get-go. A more economical run and the step up to 1200m here could see her right in the finish.

My Bella Mae is looking to become the seventh three year old to win this race and looks a good chance with 51.5kg on her back, after a super win last start in good time. No real knock on Rothfire in a race with plenty of depth.

2021 Winterbottom Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

Western Australia’s TABtouch Masters continues this Saturday with the running of the 1200m Winterbottom Stakes, worth $1M! While the milers and middle distance runners had their fun last week and will have another go next week in the Kingston Town Classic, this weekend is all about the sprinters, with a capacity field of 16 set to line up.

Looking at the market, Dabble has a clear favourite, Elite Street ($2.40). After an unsuccessful trip out East earlier this year, Elite Street has come back in incredible order this time around, winning three straight races. However, he does have some competition for the race. Wilchino ($4.40)  has won six straight races, while Graceful Girl ($8) was less than a length off the favourite last start and loves 1200m.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and it isn’t just down to those three! So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you! Read on below to find out runner by runner preview of the 2021 Winterbottom Stakes along with The Shark’s Winterbottom Stakes best tips.

1. Rock Magic (7) – $35
Jockey – Jarrad Noske
Trainer – Chris & Michael Gangemi

The 12-year-old gelding will be looking to end his career with a bang, looking to take out the Winterbottom Stakes after coming 3rd in this race the last two years. He has finished in the top 3 in 8 of his 12 third up runs and has great form on good tracks, but he may be too far past it now.

2. Elite Street (10) – $2.40
Jockey – Brad Rawiller
Trainer – Daniel Morton

The defending champion is in incredible order this prep, winning all three of his runs and being very deserving of favouritism for this year’s Winterbottom Stakes. He has already faced most of the rivals in his previous three runs and beat them, indicating that he should be too good yet again. But, at $2.40, there is a reason to find some holes. He only has one win and one second from six runs at the distance and has had one 4th up run where he didn’t even place.

3. Red Can Man (11) – $14
Jockey – Shaun McGruddy
Trainer – Steve Wolfe

While Elite Street didn’t have a successful trip out East, Red Can Man certainly did, winning a G3 and coming 3rd in a G2. He has only missed a place twice from 14 runs at Ascot and has three wins and a third from five 2nd up runs. The worry is, he is yet to place from three runs at G1 level, meaning he may not be up to this.

4. Laverrod (8) – $51
Jockey – Jordan Turner
Trainer – Sean & Jake Casey

Laverrod may be over the odds here. He was less than 3L off Elite Street last time out and he has exceptional stats for this race. He has finished in the top two in three of four 3rd up runs, has finished in the top two in all four of his runs over the Ascot 1200m circuit and has two wins and three placings from seven runs this calendar year.

5. Money Matters (6) – $51
Jockey – Craig Staples
Trainer – Chris & Michael Gangemi

Money Matters is another over the odds, considering he was also in that 2-3L back group in the Colonel Reeves last time out and is now 3rd up, where he is a perfect 3/3. He is also a perfect 2/2 at the Ascot 1200m circuit and his barrier allows him to stalk to pace and burst home.

6. Indian Pacific (12) – $16
Jockey – Brad Parnham
Trainer – Neville Parnham

Indian Pacific may have finished second in a 1200m G1 at Flemington during the Autumn, but that may have been a lesser Melbourne G1. He is also 3rd up here where he only had two third from three runs. He also hasn’t placed over 1200m at Ascot and may not be able to make up the 2L he finished behind Elite Street last start.

7. Outrageous (14) – $101
Jockey – Lucy Warwick
Trainer – Luke Fernie

Outrageous will be having his first run for Luke Fernie and it may not be a good one. While he did win when first up this time last year, that was just a BM90. He also has just two third placings from four runs at the distance.

8. Cup Night (13) – $27
Jockey – Patrick Carbery
Trainer – Bernie Miller

Cup Night is an exceptional fresh horse, with a record of 8:3-2-1. The Ascot 1200m is also his best go and he has had three great trials, including a win in the most recent one, meaning he will be rock-hard fit for this.

9. Stageman (15) – $17
Jockey – Clint Johnston-Porter
Trainer – Adam Durrant

Stageman may prefer the track to have a bit more give in it, but he is no slouch on dry tracks either. He also has a great connection with Clint Johnston-Porter, coming top three in all three of their runs together, including a win. He also has a win and a second from two 4th up runs and you could argue he would have done better than just 2L off the pace in the Colonel Reeves if he didn’t run up backsides for the entire straight.

10. Carocapo (3) – $126
Jockey – Jason Brown
Trainer – Jim Taylor

Carocapo was actually 5th in the Colonel Reeves, finishing a lot better than most of the others in this race. He also has a win and two thirds from three 4th up runs and 1200m is certainly his go, given 8 of his 9 career wins have come at the distance. However, he has never run above G3 level where he hasn’t placed from three runs at the level.

11. Iseered Iseered (5) – $41
Jockey – Mitchell Pateman
Trainer – Luke Fernie

It is hard to consider Iseered Iseered here. While he won three straight races leading into the Colonel Reeves, he finished over two lengths back there and is now 5th up from a spell. He also only has one win from three runs at the distance and that win was in stakes grade, meaning this is a massive step up here.

12. Long Beach (9) – $51
Jockey – Shaun O’Donnell
Trainer – Chris & Michael Gangemi

Long Beach was exceptional in the Colonel Reeves. While he was fading towards the end of his run and steps up an extra 100m here, he was three wide without cover there. He also has two wins from four 2nd up runs and is 3:1-0-1 over the Ascot 1200m circuit. He has proven he is up to it and gets a soft draw, but it is just whether he can run at a peak level again this Saturday.

13. River Beau (17) – $251
Jockey – Jason Whiting
Trainer – Bruce Watkins

River Beau was another to finish strongly in the Colonel Reeves, but it is hard to see how he makes up the 2.5L in this one. He does have a perfect 3rd up record, with four seconds from four runs, but he is unplaced in his only run at the distance and he only has an 18% ROI for his career.

14. Flirtini (4) – $8
Jockey – Troy Turner
Trainer – Simon Miller

Flirtini is a bit of a fan favourite but she may not be in her best condition this prep. She hasn’t finished better than 7th in all three of her runs and is just 5:1-1-0 when 4th up. She may not be up to it over 1200m against some of these, anymore.

15. Graceful Girl (18) – $8
Jockey – William Pike
Trainer – Grant & Alana Williams

Graceful Girl came from a long way back in the Colonel Reeves, running the best last 400m of the day to finish just 0.63L off the pace. Looking ahead to this weekend, she has some things in her favour for the Winterbottom. She is 1/1 4th up, she is 4/4 over 1200m, and she has the Wizard steering her home.

16. Wilchino (1) – $4.20
Jockey – Chris Parnham
Trainer – Daniel Morton

The X-factor runner, Wilchino has won six straight races, with the most recent of those being over 1200m. She has won eight of her 11 runs in her career and she is 5/6 at Ascot. This is clearly her toughest test to date, but there is a reason she is a short-priced second favourite despite this.

17e. Triple Missile (16) – $21
Jockey – TBC
Trainer – Lindsey Smith

Triple Missile finished behind Wilchino in each of his last two runs, including being 2.4L back last start over 1200m. Needs luck to get in as first emergency and has also never raced this deep into a prep before either.

18e. All Day Session (2) – $251
Jockey – TBC
Trainer – Ashley Maley

He is second emergency, so needs luck to get in, and then, as we say, will need even more luck even if he does.

Final Word

Six horses have been able to win the Winterbottom Stake more than once, with three of those winning in back to back years. Elite Street will be looking to be the seventh and fourth of those, respectively. However, we are looking for some better value around the favourite, especially considering he has missed a place in four of six runs over 1200m and hasn’t placed in his only 4th up run. Plus, there hasn’t been a winner over the last five years with a price under $5.

If we are avoiding the favourite, there are some clear standout options. Wilchino has won six straight starts, but this is a massive step up in grade. Graceful Girl has perfect stats for 1200m runs but she also has never contested anything more than a G3, where she came second to Elite Street in the Colonel Reeves. If we were picking out of those two, Graceful Girl is the clear option with Pike on board, but we are looking for even more value, with a horse that was extremely unlikely last start.

Stageman is a big go here. If you go back and watch the Colonel Reeves, he got boxed in for a run and lost all momentum, unable to break free at all in the straight. He still managed to finish under 2.5L off the pace and now that he is up to 1200m, he could burst given he has finished in the top two in six of his nine runs at the distance. He also has an incredible connection with Johnston-Porter, finishing in the top three in all three wins underneath the star hoop, including a win. We think that if Johnston-Porter is able to give Stageman a great steer, find clear air entering the straight and let the horse take over, then he will have a great chance of being in the finish, especially considering his place odds are more than each of the two favourites’ odds to win.

Best Winterbottom Stakes Tip: Stageman (Each-Way – $17/$4.40)

2020 Winterbottom Stakes Runner By Runner Preview & Tips

More Group 1 action to feast upon out west, with the 2020 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) the feature race on a big Ascot card.

Will Pikey take out another Group 1 on hot favourite Trekking? Let’s take a look at each and every runner in the 2020 Winterbottom Stakes…

1 – Trekking – $2.40 👀🏆💰

The obvious class galloper in the race and the clear one to beat. Has been travelling well this prep placing in both the Moir Stakes and the Manikato Stakes, as well as a massive finish in The Everest. Has had a tick over trial out west and with luck in transit should be winning this. The price is the biggest query; it is a very short quote.

2 – Rock Magic – $21 💰

A great story to see an 11-year-old contesting a Group 1, and this old boy is actually in reasonable touch and could definitely run a hole at the odds, can be included in exotics.

3 – Malibu Style – $126

Another old-timer at 9 years of age, but he would really have to turn back the clock to have a chance. Price tells the tale.

4 – Valour Road – $15 💰

Draws to get a nice suck run behind the speed and returns to a Good surface which will suit, well worth including in exotics.

5 – Durendal – $151

Would have to start running now.

6 – Vital Silver – $21

Class horse on its day, but hasn’t come back well this preparation, and would need to lift to be in the finish.

7 – Red Can Man – $18💰

On the quick backup from the Railway Stakes last week, with this looking like a far better setup, is worth including in exotics.

8 – Stageman – $12 💰

Running well this prep but this is a big step up to Group 1 company. The 1200m will suit, but will need to find a few lengths.

9 – Carocapo – Scratched

10 – Laverrod – $71

Not running well enough to compete here, price is about right.

11 – Mankind – $201

No chance.

12 – Indian Pacific – $8 👀💰

Progressive type who will enjoy getting back on top of the ground, and can certainly come into play if the track is favouring those on speed, or if Trekking finds trouble in the run.

13 – Elite Street – $16 👀🏆💰

Lightly-raced progressive type who looks overs at the current price. Has a booming turn of foot and could surprise here if Trekking is having an off day. Goes in all exotics.

14 – Flirtini – $31

Didn’t look near it first up and this looks too tough.

15 – Essential Spice – $61

Price tells the story.

16 – Celebrity Queen – $8.50 💰

Beat home Stageman and Indian Pacific despite still doing some things wrong, this is a big step up to Group 1 level though.

17 – Condor Heroes – $126

Will set a cracking pace early but will become a roadblock late.

Tip: 1-13-12-2
