2023 Vinery Stud Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The Vinery Stud Stakes is a prominent race on the Sydney Autumn racing calendar for three-year-old fillies, recognised for both its historical significance and esteemed reputation. Held over 2000m at Rosehill Gardens, the Group 1 event acts as a precursor to the ATC Oaks and presents a rare opportunity for fillies with staying potential to achieve Group 1 success.

Looking at the market, Dabble has Kiwi sensation, Prowess, a short priced favourite at $2.35, off the back of some terrific form across the ditch. Pavitra is the clear second pick at $3.20, after a demolition job in the Kembla Grange Classic last start. Fireburn is the only other runner in single figures, currently at $8.00.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and upsets occur on a regular basis. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2023 Vinery Stud Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Prowess (4) – $2.35F
Jockey – Mark Zahra 56kg
Trainer – Roger James & Robert Wellwood

Kiwi filly who is a winner of six from eight including the Group 1 Bonecrusher, which she won last start at Pukekohe. Should enjoy a sweet run from the good draw here and has form around New Zealand’s best, including La Crique and Legarto. Well suited under the conditions here and looks one of the main hopes.

2. Fireburn (6) – $8.00
Jockey – Tyler Schiller (a) 56kg
Trainer – Gary Portelli

Former Golden Slipper-winning two year old who hasn’t been sighted in the winner’s stall for some time now. Latest effort behind Zougotcha was solid and she seems to be in want of a trip like this now. Definitely has the class to win but others may have her covered here.

3. Pavitra (9) – $3.20
Jockey – Chad Schofield 56kg
Trainer – Richard & Will Freedman

Wasn’t far away first up in the Millie Fox before absolutely destroying her rivals in the Kembla Grange Classic last start over the mile. Showed plenty of staying potential last preparation and the 2000m third up here looks ideal. One to beat.

4. Polygon (12) – $31
Jockey – Brett Prebble 56kg
Trainer – Lance Noble

Second of the Kiwi fillies who was ok from the back last start in the Kembla Classic, despite being no match for the winner, Pavitra. Form prior in New Zealand was good, including a Group 2 win over this trip. Likely improver here but hard to see her turning the tables on the Freedman runner.

5. Papillon Club (3) – SCRATCHED

Jockey – Regan Bayliss 56kg
Trainer – Greg Eurell

N/A.

6. Soul Choice (13) – $13
Jockey – Tim Clark 56kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Consistent filly who almost caused an upset in the Launceston Guineas before two strong wins at 2100m, including the Tasmanian Oaks last start. No doubt this is stronger but she will be sent forward from the wide draw and be in it for a long way.

7. Pierossa (2) – $16
Jockey – Sam Clipperton 56kg
Trainer – Peter & Paul Snowden

Got back and never got into the race first up behind Lindermann before a much improved effort in the Kembla Classic last start. Another who will need to be at her absolute best to turn the tables on Pavitra, but can run into the placings if she handles the step up in trip.

8. Call Di (8) – $17
Jockey – Nash Rawiller 56kg
Trainer – Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou

Got the chocolates first up on the Kenso track before a super run at Sandown behind Shuffle Dancer. Stepped up to the mile last start in the Kembla Classic, where she loomed to win, but was found wanting late. Has plenty of ability, which is no surprise if you look at her breeding, but the ten furlongs is a query for mine.

9. So Dazzling (5) – $26
Jockey – Tom Sherry 56kg
Trainer – John Sargent

Sent around at big odds last start in the Kembla Classic and finished off quite nicely to grab second spot. Should only improve here out to 2000m and comes from a strong staying stable. Any rain would only enhance her chances.

10. Byron Belle (10) – $61
Jockey – Tom Marquand 56kg
Trainer – John Sargent

Second of the Sargent trained fillies who ran well at Hawkesbury last start, despite only being a Class 1. Form prior was around some pretty handy types and she looks as though she’ll handle the rise in trip. Needs to put her best foot forward to finish top three but is not the worst.

11. Infinitive (7) – $41
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy 56kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Tough filly having her eighth run here in her first racing preparation. Got back and made some late ground in the Kembla Classic last start, following a dominant win at Canterbury over 1900m. Hard to see her taking top honours here but won’t disgrace herself.

12. Frankie’s Me Dad (11) – $51
Jockey – Brenton Avdulla 56kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Lightly raced filly who has gone from a seven length Queanbeyan maiden defeat to a Group 1 Stakes race within four starts. Latest win over 2300m at Newcastle was good, but this is much tougher and others look to have her measure.

13. Whisky Wisdom (1) – $71
Jockey – Rachel King 56kg
Trainer – Benjamin Smith

Kembla-trained filly who, like many in this field, was no match for Pavitra last start. Her run prior in a Midway here at Rosehill was solid, but it’s hard to see her troubling some of the better chances in the market.

14. Stormy Witness (14) – $126
Jockey – Robbie Dolan 56kg
Trainer – Danny Williams

Got the bob in a Goulburn maiden two back before finishing third at Moruya last start in BM58 grade. With all due respect, if that form is strong enough to win a Group 1 Vinery Stud, I’ll walk from the Gold Coast to Rosehill in my Reg Grundies. No.

Final Word

Some progressive young fillies are set to do battle here, with a likely trans-Tasman arm wrestle on the cards. The bureau is predicting 20-40mm of rain on Friday and further showers Saturday, meaning the track could well be in the soft, even heavy range, by the time the starter hits go. There doesn’t look to be a whole lot of tempo up front early, but those in the market should race handy enough to the speed and the best horse should win the race.

Top Tip: 3. Pavitra – could not have been more impressive last start in the Kembla Grange Classic over 1600m. Was well performed last Spring once she got to 2000m and beyond and should be ready to fire third up here. The only query is how wet the track is come race time, but it’s hard to see anything out of the aforementioned Kembla Grange Classic troubling her.

Biggest Danger: 1. Prowess – looks the obvious danger on paper. She is a winner of six from eight in New Zealand and has form around the likes of Legarto and La Crique to name a couple. She’s proven at the trip, and on wet ground, and is drawn nicely.

Best Value/ Roughie: 9. So Dazzling – made nice late ground last start in the Kembla Grange Classic. The extra journey looks ideal here and she grows a leg on heavy tracks. Follow any late market support and include in all exotics.

2022 Vinery Stud Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

*Saturday 26th March: The rest of the race meeting has been abandoned. At this stage it is unknown where the remainder of the races will be rescheduled.*

*Sunday 27th March: It has been announced that the remaining races from the Rosehill meeting will be moved to Newcastle and take place on Monday 28th March.*

*There is no 2000m start at Newcastle so the Vinery Stud Stakes is reduced slightly to 1850m.*

The Vinery Stud Stakes is a Group 1 race held over 2000m at Rosehill Racecourse for 3YO fillies. The $500k feature acts as the main lead up race to the G1 ATC Oaks.

Since it was first run in 1979, a number of star fillies have saluted in the race. Verry Elleegant won the race in 2019, and completed the Vinery/ Oaks double in doing so. Last year’s race was taken out by the Chris Waller trained Hungry Heart.

As we look at the market for this year’s race, Dabble has Surround Stakes winner Hinged favourite at $4.00, just ahead of unbeaten Qld mare Gypsy Goddess, at $4.20. Fangirl and Pretty Amazing are next at $6.00 and $7.50, and Never Been Kissed rounds out the runners in single figures at $9.00.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and as seen by the market, this year’s race is very open. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Vinery Stud Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Yearning (15) – $13
Jockey – Tommy Berry 56kg
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes

Resumed with a good effort in the G2 Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield, before a flat second up run in the G2 Kewney Stakes. Ran 4th in the G2 Wakeful this distance last Spring, and raced last time out like the step up will benefit. Barrier makes his task tricky, but is capable of finishing in the first four.

2. Hinged (4) – $4.00F
Jockey – Brenton Avdulla 56kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Good win two starts ago in the G1 Surround Stakes, before another super effort last start, against older mares, in the G1 Coolmore. Untried past a mile, but is racing like the 2000m will be no issue. Likes the sting out, and has the right form to win this.

3. Never Been Kissed (2) – $9.00
Jockey – Regan Bayliss 56kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Led and weakened first up in the G1 Surround, before an improved effort last start in the G2 Phar Lap Stakes. Ran 2nd in last year’s G1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m at Randwick, suggesting the step up in trip should be ideal. Will roll forward from the good gate and should be in it for a long way.

4. Fangirl (10) – $6.00
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 56kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Was sent out a short price favourite last start in the G2 Phar Lap, and never got into the race. Her form prior was very good, and with the way she relaxes in the run, the 2000m shouldn’t pose any problems. Will snag back and look for some cover from the gate, and can run a much improved race here.

5. Mokulua (6) – $26
Jockey – Nash Rawiller 56kg
Trainer – Clarry Conners

Got to the line well without threatening in the Light Fingers and Angus Armanasco, before a much improved run last start at Flemington. Has 2000m written all over her, and from the good draw can figure in the finish.

6. Gypsy Goddess (11) – $4.20
Jockey – William Pike 56kg
Trainer – David Vandyke

Unbeaten Qld filly who has plenty of staying potential. Won in a hand canter first up at Doomben over the mile, and looks primed for this second up. Her two wins over 2000m and 2100m have been strong, and it’s hard to see her not measuring up here. I’ve thought for a long time she can win the ATC Oaks, and she’s a big chance of winning this along the way.

7. Pretty Amazing (13) – $7.50
Jockey – James McDonald 56kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Progressive filly who just keeps improving. Has shown plenty of promise this prep, and was a convincing winner of the G3 Kembla Grange Classic last start. She handles all conditions and races like the 2000m will suit. Drawn wide, but if she can get some cover in the run, she will be strong at the tail end of the race.

8. Hope In Your Heart (9) – $26
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy 56kg
Trainer – Kerry Parker

Chased home Pretty Amazing last start in the G3 Kembla Grange Classic. Prior to that she was strong to the line in the G1 Surround Stakes. Has proven she has the class to mix it with these fillies, and 2000m should pose no issue. One for exotics at big odds.

9. Gin Martini (5) – $61
Jockey – Robbie Dolan 56kg
Trainer – John Sargent

Another filly who finished well in the Kembla Grange Classic last start behind Pretty Amazing. Has won over 2000m and draws a nice marble here. Can measure up.

10. Honeycreeper (8) – $34 – Scratched
Jockey – Jamie Kah 56kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Started odds on and finished 3rd in the Listed Tasmanian Oaks last start. Has had a trial to prepare for this and gets the blinkers on, which may spark some required improvement.

11. Stray (1) – $31
Jockey – Jason Collett 56kg
Trainer – Anthony Cummings

Had no luck at all last start in the G2 Kewney Stakes at Flemington, where she went to the line under a hold. Has shown glimpses of brilliance throughout her career, and wouldn’t be a shock to see her figure in the money in this.

12. Pink Ivory (12) – $16
Jockey – Rory Hutchings 56kg
Trainer – John Sargent

Well bred filly who was dominant winning a BM64 last start at Newcastle. She beat a smart one there, and has the ability to handle all conditions. Step up to 2000m looks ideal, and she’s a definite each way chance.

13. Ellenmac (3) – $101
Jockey – Kathy O’Hara 56kg
Trainer – Matthew Smith

Wasn’t disgraced last start in the Kembla Grange Classic, where she finished midfield. Has shown promise in her short career, but this is another big step up here, and looks a bridge too far.

14. Youthful (7) – $126
Jockey – Brock Ryan 56kg
Trainer – Brad Widdup

Looks in a similar boat to the above runner. Has shown ability, and looks as though she’ll run the trip, but a maiden would’ve been more ideal.

15. Hidden Smile (14) – $126
Jockey – Rachel King 56kg
Trainer – Anthony Cummings

Yet to run a whole in four career starts. Unlikely to break that trend here.

Final Word

This year’s Vinery Stud Stakes looks a very strong and competitive field of 3YO fillies. At first glance, I thought Qld filly Gyspy Goddess was a clear standout, but after going through the form it seems a very open race. I still maintain she is the one to beat after her dominant first up win, but this is a step up, and she needs to prove she can do it in this grade.

Former Qld filly Hinged has the right form on paper to win this race. Not sure she can go on and win the ATC Oaks over 2400m, but it’s hard to knock what she’s done this prep. Her stablemate Fangirl is more than capable of making amends, after a lacklustre performance last start. If she had won that race, she probably would have headed the market here.

The third of the Waller fillies, Pretty Amazing, comes through a strong Kembla Grange Classic, and looks to have untapped ability. Any of the trio can win. Also out of that race, Hope In Your Heart, and Gin Martini, are not without place hopes here.

At odds, Pink Ivory looks primed to run a big race here, after a dominant last start win. It may have only been BM64 grade, but the second horse is no slouch.

The winning chances go on and on. Yearning, Never Been Kissed, Mokulua, and Stray all have claims, but as for the on top selection, I’m going to stick firm with Gypsy Goddess. I feel she has the ability to win this, and the ATC Oaks, and give astute Qld trainer David Vandyke something to look forward to heading into the Spring.

Best Vinery Stud Stakes Tip: 6. Gyspy Goddess – Win ($4.20)
