2022 Thousand Guineas Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The $1m Thousand Guineas is a Group 1 race held for three-year-old fillies at Caulfield Racecourse, under set weights conditions. The 1600m feature is a grand final race for many, but is also used as a pathway to the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes and Group 1 VRC Oaks, held over 2500m at Flemington. The Team Hawkes trained, Yearning, came from last on the turn to take out last year’s Thousand Guineas, with Damien Thornton in the saddle.

Boogie Dancer is currently $3.50 favourite with Dabble for this year’s Thousand Guineas, following a dominant last start victory. Kiwi filly, She’s Licketysplit, is on the next line at $4.20, just ahead of the Waterhouse/Bott trained, North Star Lass, at $5.50. Russian Conquest ($8.50) is also given a hope, as is Sydney-sider Madame Pommery ($9.00).

With a compressed market and some very even form lines on paper, this year’s Thousand Guineas looks like anyone’s race. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview for the 2022 Thousand Guineas along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Russian Conquest (1) – $8.50
Jockey – Jamie Kah 56kg
Trainer – Peter & Paul Snowden

Failed to make an impression first up on heavy ground at Randwick before a much improved effort last start at Sandown behind Waltz On By. She ran some good closing splits there and gives the indication the mile will suit. Will need some luck from the inside gate but has to be considered a chance on her latest effort.

2. Revolutionary Miss (10) – $23
Jockey – Mark Zahra 56kg
Trainer – Peter & Paul Snowden

Went back to last from the wide gate last start and made some good late ground behind Waltz On By at Sandown. Gets a bit of weight relief here and races well at this track. Will most likely be ridden cold from the wide gate again here and should be in the finish if she can run a strong mile.

3. She’s Licketysplit (5) – $4.20
Jockey – Damian Lane 56kg
Trainer – Andrew Forsman

Covered ground at Caulfield under the big weight and whacked away solidly behind Boogie Dancer, before a strong win in the Edward Manifold last start. Has the benefit of a mile run under her belt and drawn well here. Major player.

4. Boogie Dancer (6) – $3.50F
Jockey – Luke Nolen 56kg
Trainer – Peter G Moody

Got back and finished strongly to destroy her rivals in the Tranquil Star last start here at Caulfield. Ran faster time than Aft Cabin on the day and the form out of the race has since been franked by She’s Licketysplit and Mumbai Jewel. Comes into this three weeks between runs and up to the mile which is the only concern, but is a deserved favourite and looks hard to beat.

5. North Star Lass (2) – $5.50
Jockey – Tim Clark 56kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Led them up and continued her consistent form with a solid third in the Flight Stakes last start. Ran a strong mile in testing conditions on that occasion and looks the likely leader here. The Sydney form has stood up well so far this Spring and she looks one of the main hopes here.

6. Waltz On By (3) – $17
Jockey – Craig Williams 56kg
Trainer – Peter G Moody

Made it two wins in a row last start winning the Jim Moloney at Sandown. The step up to 1600m looks a little query but she should get a sweet run behind the speed and be given every chance.

7. Madame Pommery (4) – $9.00
Jockey – James McDonald 56kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Just missed in the Tea Rose behind Zougotcha before failing to make an impression in the Flight Stakes last start. Drier track should suit her here, she’s drawn well and nobody is riding better than McDonald of late. Chance on her best form.

8. Moko (11) – $34
Jockey – Ben Melham 56kg
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

*This horse has since been scratched.*

Given too much to do first up in a Pakenham maiden and was narrowly defeated before an even run last start behind She’s Licketysplit. Should be ready to peak third up and had some good form last prep behind Williamsburg. Not out of it.

9. Jenny Jerome (9) – $26
Jockey – Harry Coffey 56kg
Trainer – Patrick Payne

Got back and rattled home along the inside to finish a close second behind Waltz On By last start. Beaten 0.2L by Boogie Dancer in maiden grade and is out of the same dam as Cherry Tortoni, suggesting the mile will be a plus. If the speed is genuine she is a definite winning chance.

10. Tajneed (8) – $12
Jockey – Damien Oliver 56kg
Trainer – Peter & Paul Snowden

Got the job done first up at Sandown before a solid effort in the Edward Manifold last start. Drawn a sticky gate here but gets the services of D Oliver and has to be respected on what she’s done so far in her short career.

11. She’s Pretty Rich (7) – $126
Jockey – Brian Higgins 56kg
Trainer – Matthew Brown

Ran a good race in the Cap D’Antibes at odds before travelling wide and copping a bump in the Jim Moloney last start. Probably needs to find a couple of lengths to win this but shouldn’t be the price she is.

Final Word

An even bunch of fillies line up to contest this year’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield. The speed looks moderate with the Waterhouse/Bott trained, North Star Lass, the likely leader. There is some rain forecast for late in the day but the surface should be good.

Going with the Sydney-sider here in North Star Lass. Her runs this prep have all been solid in top grade races, and her form around the likes of Zougotcha and In Secret reads well for a race like this. She should get a soft enough lead and prove very hard to run down around Caulfield.

The Patrick Payne trained, Jenny Jerome, looks well over the odds after an eye-catching second at Sandown last start. She ran Boogie Dancer to a neck when they met in a maiden at Donald, and the mile looks right up her alley.

Favourite, Boogie Dancer, and Kiwi filly, She’s Licketysplit, look good winning chances and there’s no knock but feel there is some value to be found in what appears to be a level race.

2021 Thousand Guineas Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The Caulfield Cup carnival continues on Wednesday with the Thousand Guineas for three-year-old fillies. There are 13 horses that have accepted entry the race and after finding the winner of the Caulfield Guineas on Saturday, we are keen to get stuck into Wednesday’s Group One.

Sportsbet currently, as of Monday night, have Hinged as their $4.20 favourite for the Thousand Guineas. Zouzarella opened at $4.60 favourite and has been brought in to $4.40 but the punters came for Hinged, who opened at $4.80. The only other runner in single figure odds is the late entry, Oaks preview winner – Barb Raider ($5.50).

Everyone is looking at the weather reports as there is up to 20mm forecast for Wednesday afternoon, but when will the rain actually come? Given the weather plus the fact that this is rare mid-week Group One racing, you may not have the time to do all of the form for the big race for three-year-old fillies. However, you don’t need to as we have done that for you. Read on below to find out runner-by-runner preview of the Group One 1600m Thousand Guineas, along with our best tip!

1. Swift Witness (12) – $13
Jockey – Michael Dee
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Swift Witness is an on-pace runner that has been set a task by drawing barrier 12 of 13. She led throughout the Flight Stakes, when finishing 2.6L back in fourth behind Never Been Kissed, who came second in the Spring Champion Stakes on the quick back-up, franking the form. She has good form on soft tracks but the tactics may be against her from the wide draw.

2. Hinged (9) – $4.20
Jockey – Damian Lane
Trainer – Chris Waller

While Swift Witness’ fourth place in the Flight Stakes was impressive, Hinged had an even better run. She burst home along the rails to narrowly miss the win, finishing just 0.2L back in second. She is the most experienced and successful filly in the race, plus she stays at 1600m, where she has a win and a second from two runs. Add in the fact that she has great stats on good (5:2-2-0), soft (3:2-1-0) and heavy (1:1-0-0) surfaces, there is no surprises that she is favourite.

3. Elusive Express (11) – $10
Jockey – Jye McNeil
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Elusive Express brings a completely different formline into the race, winning the G2 1610m Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington, on the same day as the Flight Stakes. She has had just four career runs, finishing top three in all of them, including two wins. Both her wins have come on soft tracks, indicating she will be fine if the rain comes, it is just whether the Melbourne filly form is better than Sydney’s, which it very well may!

4. Bon’s A Pearla (13) – $18
Jockey – Jason Maskiell
Trainer – Kevin Corstens

Three fillies in the Thousand Guineas contested the Thousand Guineas prelude 3.5 weeks ago and Bon’s A Peala came out on top in that race. She actually looked gone in that race heading around the bend but had an incredible last 200m to steal it from Heresy. She did carry 2kg less than Heresy there, and meets her at set weights here, whilst also forcing her three wide the trip, which she won’t be able to do from barrier 13.

5. Literary Magnate (6) – $46
Jockey – Dean Yendall
Trainer – Matthew Williams

Would be a surprise. Literary Magnate has finished behind a few of these in her last couple of runs despite meeting them at equal or lighter weights. It is her first trip up to 1600m but she didn’t finish 1400m off strongly and may be out of her depth here.

6. Zouzarella (2) – $4.40
Jockey – Brett Prebble
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Zouzarella opened as favourite and that is no surprise. The back-marker had no luck chasing down Queen Of Dubai last time out but Sandown is known for being leader-bias. She comfortably won her two runs over 1200m to start the prep and looks like one of the main contenders off a 2.5 week break, where most of her main rivals have either had 1.5 or 3.5 weeks.

7. Heresy (1) – $10
Jockey – Damien Oliver
Trainer – James Cummings

Was unlucky to be pipped at the post in the prelude but should get much better luck here. Heresy has carried 56.5kg or heavier in all three of her runs this prep and drops back to 56kg at the set weight conditions. She was also forced three wide last time out but should get a nice, cushy ride from barrier one at Caulfield. Having her fourth favourite is probably fair enough but $10 may be overs.

8. Queen Of Dubai (10) – $21
Jockey – Jordan Childs
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

A Waterhouse/Bott trained horse jumping to the front, leading throughout and winning. Sounds familiar right? Queen Of Dubai was very impressive when beating Zouzarella at Sandown but had conditions to suit her there. She may not get those here with other fillies to contest her for the lead and any rain would benefit others more than her as well.

9. Yearning (7) – $26
Jockey – Damien Thornton
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes

Yearning was scratched from the G1 Flight in favour of the G2 Edward Manifold a week and a half ago and arguably should have won it. While Elusive Express was able to peel off into clear air, Yearning got her momentum halted when the leader slowed down in front of her. She was able to burst back to be right in the finish with Elusive Express but fell half a length short. She is now $26 while Elusive Express is only $10? She will be better for the run at 1610m and has a win and a second from two runs on soft tracks. Could be a blow-out chance.

10. Barb Raider (3) – $5.50
Jockey – Craig Williams
Trainer – Jerome Hunter

In an interesting move, connections have paid the late entry fee for Barb Raider despite the filly winning the 1800m Oaks Preview and is on an Oaks path. She has won two on the trot, including a 2L win in the Preview, and connections are confident she has the speed and turn-of-foot to match it at 1600m, and they could very well be right. She obviously has a lot of talent and Craig Williams sticks on her, which is a massive tick.

11. Cuban Link (4) – $46
Jockey – Luke Currie
Trainer – Greg Eurell

While Cuban Link has also won back to back races, which is no small feat, they have been in much lower grades and the form doesn’t stack up. The colt she beat in a BM64 last time came out and lost another BM64 on Saturday, which doesn’t exactly scream out Group One form.

12. Achira (8) – $91
Jockey – Luke Nolen
Trainer – Lee & Cherie Curtis

While Achira opened at $151 and is now $91, which is a significant crunch, she is still the longest odds runner in the race. Her last start was a win over 1600m but that was in maiden class and she is now going up against the best fillies in the country.

13. Fortunate Kiss (5) – $19
Jockey – Dean Holland
Trainer – Daniel Bowman

Fortunate Kiss came fifth in the Jim Moloney Stakes at Sandown, behind Queen Of Dubai and Zouzarella. Given she didn’t really make ground on Queen Of Dubai while Zouzarella ran right past her, it doesn’t look promising in this race.

Final Word

In the last 15 years, seven favourites have won the Thousand Guineas, meaning the money typically follows the best horses and either Hinged or Zouzarella should be strongly considered. However, over the same period there were five fillies to win with double digit odds, so there is a place to look for some value.

Good form is key coming into the race, considering six of the last nine winners finished in the top three in their last race before the Thousand Guineas. However, that only eliminated three of the 13 fillies in the race. If we look into lead-up races, the Edward Manifold Stakes has produced eight winners of the Thousand Guineas since the turn of the century, with four fillies completing the double, making it the most successful lead up race over that time.

That leaves us with Elusive Express and Yearning, with the former finishing 0.75L ahead of the latter in the Edward Manifold. Yearning is a nice proposition at odds of $26/$6.50 but will she be able to turn the tables on Elusive Express here? We are siding with the form and Elusive Express has plenty of it. She has finished in the top three in all four of her career runs and looked like she relished the rise in distance up to 1600m in the Edward Manifold. She is proven at the distance and won in the best form race for the Thousand Guineas and likely still has improvement to come! Given Sportsbet are offering bonus back up to 3rd and Elusive Express hasn’t missed a place in her career, you should feel comfortable about either getting a win at nice odds or getting a bonus back to use on the last, or saving it for the weekend!

2020 Thousand Guineas Preview, Odds, & Tips

The best three-year-old fillies have come together here to contest the 2020 Thousand Guineas (1600m), with Hungry Heart, Thermosphere, and Vangelic coming from Sydney to spoil the party for the Victorians. There’s also the eye-catching South Australian Instant Celebrity…

Let’s take a look at each runner in the 2020 Thousand Guineas.

1 – Hungry Heart – $3.40 ???

Doing her best Tom Melbourne impersonation with a hattrick of second places this prep. Finally got the better of Dame Giselle last start in the Flight Stakes and should have won, but got headed by Montefilia late. Nonetheless she looked strong through the line and if she gets a clear run with the blinkers on, looks better than any of the Melbourne fillies.

2 – Thermosphere – $14 ?

Won well in the Edward Manifold Stakes last week over the mile and is humming along well. Hungry Heart has had her measure up in Sydney and it’s tough to see that changing, but she goes in all exotics.

3 – Instant Celebrity – $3.50 ???

It’s tough to knock her, I was against her in the Thousand Guineas Prelude as I though she’d be spotting them too many lengths, but Willo got her to jump well and sit midfield, which is a big plus. She has an electric turn of foot, but is she too brilliant for the mile?

4 – Personal – $17 ?

Looked to hit a few flat spots on the way home in the Thousand Guineas Prelude, but worked well through the line and looks like she will enjoy the step up in trip. Worth including in exotics at the big price.

5 – Vangelic – $12 ?

Another filly bringing the Sydney form, has placed twice behind Dame Giselle and Hungry Heart this prep, which is very good going for this race. Should lead and has place chances.

6 – Ecunemical – $35

Covered a stack of ground in the run in the Prelude but may have to again from barrier 13. Finished off well despite being caught wide and could place with some luck.

7 – Aidensfield – $15

Has been racing well in the Melbourne fillies races, runner up in the listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes, and the Jim Moloney Stakes. Couldn’t beat Night Raid who lead and punctured in the Prelude, would need to improve.

8 – Night Raid – $23

Looked the goods after her impressive maiden win at Tatura and saluting in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes, but it all came crashing down in the Prelude where she lead and ran out of gas in the straight. Think she will be far better suited taking a sit behind Vangelic, but there has to be queries over her running out the mile.

9 – Odeum – $15 ?

Had the race fall into her lap when winning the Jim Moloney Stakes, and would need everything to go right here to repeat the feat.

10 – Rock My Wand – $18 ?

Another Sydney filly who placed in the Prelude after coming from a long way back. Will have to have things go her way with her racing style, but could place with some luck.

11 – Mozzie Monster – $61

Looked a star after her wins at Cranbourne and Bendigo, but hasn’t looked up to it during her two runs at Caulfield. Has lost J Kah and would need to improve considerably.

12 – Agreeable – $34

Hasn’t quite shown enough to trouble them so far this campaign. Looks like the mile will suit, but may be a preparation away from challenging.

13 – Love Sensation – $41 ?

Ran well in the Prelude and could possibly run a hole with all things going right.

14 – Yosemite – $126

May be back and buried from the inside gate. Looks too tough.
