The Hotham is a 1200m race promoted by Sportsbet for Australia’s battlers. It takes place at Ballarat Racecourse and those horses with the most starts without a win get preference for entry. It has a prize pool of $75,000, has set weight conditions, and in 2020 will be run on Friday, October 9.

In 2019 the Glenn Stewart-trained Mylex won The Hotham. She easily beat out Costano Mile and Danube Delta, winning by over two lengths. Mylex has since won another race, claiming a victory at Moe in 2020.

The Hotham was first run in 2017 and was created in opposition to The Everest, the world’s richest races. The first edition was won by Woohoo, who beat Briconi by over a length. In total, the runners that year had competed in 399 races without a win.

Racing fans have been invested in the race since its inception and a few years ago even tried to get cult hero jockey William Pike to come over and ride in the event. Sadly it didn’t come to fruition, but it would be great to see him go around in the novelty race.
