2022 The Goodwood Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

This Saturday sees the running of the premier Group 1 sprint race on the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival calendar, The Goodwood. Held at Morphettville racecourse, the 1200m scamper has brought together a competitive field of sprinters from far and wide, since its first running in 1881.

With a total prize money purse of $502,250, the set-weights plus penalties feature has been taken out by some absolute stars of the turf, including; Takeover Target (2009) and Black Caviar (2012). Last year’s race was won by former Territorian, Savatoxl, who lines up again this year in a bid to go back-to-back.

Looking at the market, Dabble has lightly raced 3YO colt, Extreme Warrior, favourite in a very open affair at $4.80. Top weight, Behemoth, is solid in the market at $7.50, whilst The Astrologist and The Inferno have met with good support and are at $8.50 and $9.00, respectively.

With a large field set to do battle, and a wide open market, this year’s The Goodwood looks like anyone’s race. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 The Goodwood along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Behemoth (8) – $7.50
Jockey – Kayla Crowther 59kg
Trainer – David Jolly

Multiple G1 winning gelding who resumed with a solid effort in the D C McKay Stakes, behind Free of Debt, where he carried 62kg and had little luck in the straight. The 1200m second up looks ideal and he has a good record here at Morphettville. This will be his fourth crack at this race, and will be looking to go one better than he did in 2019, where he finished runner up behind Despatch. Drawn well and looks one of the main winning hopes.

2. Savatoxl (7) – $11
Jockey – Barend Vorster 58.5kg
Trainer – Tony & Calvin McEvoy

Led them up in the D C McKay Stakes first up from the wide draw, and battled on well to finish second to Free of Debt. Won this race last year second up, and looks to be on track again this year. Has to carry 2.5kg more than he did on that occasion, but makes his own luck on speed and will be in it for a long way.

3. September Run (18) – SCRATCHED
Jockey – Craig Williams 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

N/A.

4. The Inferno (3) – $9.00
Jockey – Mark Zahra 57kg
Trainer – Cliff Brown

Ex-Singapore star, who showed glimpses of his best form last start, in the D C McKay Stakes. He got to the line hard on that occasion, and the step up to 1200m here looks suitable. The low barrier is probably not ideal for a horse like him, but if Zahra can weave some magic, he’s definitely good enough to run over the top of them late.

5. Beau Rossa (21) – $51
Jockey – Ben Price (a) 57kg
Trainer – Will Clarken

Talented gelding who was very disappointing last start behind Free of Debt, when starting favourite. He has a good record this track/distance, but off the strength of his last run and from the outside gate, it’s hard to have him in the numbers.

6. In The Boat (20) – SCRATCHED
Jockey – Blaike McDougall 57kg
Trainer – Lindsey Smith

N/A.

7. Instant Celebrity (17) – $34
Jockey – Jake Toeroek 56.5kg
Trainer – Phillip Stokes

Resumed her prep with a good effort in G3 company, where she was outbobbed by Bella Vella. She then got back last start in the Robert Sangster, and was just fair to the line. She finished second in this race last year, and gets the blinkers on for this. Will need a bit of luck from the wide gate, but is capable of running into the placings at odds.

8. The Astrologist (6) – $8.50
Jockey – Fred Kersley 56kg
Trainer – Leon & Troy Corstens

Finished runner up in the G1 Newmarket at Flemington, before close-up efforts in the William Reid and Vobis Gold Sprint. Has the right form on the board for a race like this and will race handy from the good gate. Could represent some good each way value.

9. Halvorsen (2) – $31
Jockey – Andrew Mallyon 56kg
Trainer – Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock

Sailed home from the back of the field to finish second in the G1 William Reid at big odds, before another honest run behind In The Boat last start. Gets back in his races and will need some luck from the inside draw, but should be competitive on recent form.

10. Free Of Debt (4) – $41
Jockey – Dom Tourneur 56kg
Trainer – Chris Bieg

Was backed at big odds first up in the D C McKay Stakes, and got the job done. Comes up with a good gate here but his best form is over 1000/1100m, and a high pressure G1 may bring him unstuck here second up. Willing to risk.

11. Regardsmaree (1) – $21
Jockey – Billy Egan 56kg
Trainer – Nick Ryan

Comes to Adelaide off the back of two strong wins in Melbourne, the latest at Listed level. Has some strong form around good horses, including In The Boat and The Astrologist, and the stable is flying. Will need a touch of luck from the draw, but is capable of measuring up.

12. Ironclad (16) – $34
Jockey – Will Price (a) 55.5kg
Trainer – Will Clarken

Resumed from a break in impressive fashion here at Morphettville, when he won the Matrice Stakes. He was then well fancied last start in the D C McKay, and although finished midfield, was far from disgraced. He’s won 4 from 5 at Morphettville and is unbeaten this track/distance. If things go his way in the run, he’s good enough to put away a field like this.

13. Lombardo (19) – $16
Jockey – Zac Spain 55.5kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Finished midfield behind In The Boat, before being nailed on the post by Regardsmaree last start at Caulfield. He’s two from two here at Morphettville, but the wide gate makes it tough considering his racing pattern. Will need a 10/10 ride from the young hoop.

14. Outlaws Revenge (9) – $81
Jockey – Jason Holder 55.5kg
Trainer – Ryan Balfour

Did little first up behind Bell Vella, before a much improved effort last start in the D C McKay, where he made good late headway. Steps up to G1 company now, but from the decent draw and off the strength of his last run, he’s a blowout chance at massive odds.

15. Bella Nipotina (15) – $15
Jockey – John Allen 55kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Consistent mare who wasn’t far away last start in the Robert Sangster. Prior to that she was a G2 winner in Sydney. Drawn awkwardly here, but if she can get some cover behind the speed, she will be in the finish.

16. Aysar (12) – $34
Jockey – Michael Dee 54.5kg
Trainer – Ben & JD Hayes

Went forward and held on well in the D C McKay behind Free of Debt, first up from a break. The step up to 1200m second up is a tick, and he should be improved by that run. The negative is, he hasn’t won for a long time, but he shouldn’t be far away come the business end.

17. Not An Option (5) – $21
Jockey – Patrick Moloney 54.5kg
Trainer – Michael Moroney

Returned to racing after the ultimate gear change (gelding), and got the chocolates at big odds in the Listed Hareeba Stakes. Last start he got back, and got to the line well behind Extreme Warrior. He’s racing well and is drawn nicely for this. Both jockey and trainer are on fire of late, and he’s one of the better roughies in the race.

18. Frankie Pinot (10) – $23
Jockey – Dean Holland 54.5kg
Trainer – Tony & Calvin McEvoy

Won the Wangoom first up at Warrnambool, on a bottomless track. Triple Missile has franked the form out of that race, after he won last Saturday at Flemington. He ran Lighthouse to length last prep, and gets a crack at a G1 now. He’ll have to put his best foot forward, but he’s a talented gelding on his day.

19. Extreme Warrior (13) – $4.80F
Jockey – Jamie Kah 53.5kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Lightly raced colt who went forward first up at Caulfield and repelled all challengers. He started favourite in the G1 Coolmore Stud last prep, after blowing his rivals away in the Blue Sapphire. No doubt he’ll be here in fine fettle second up, and if he can overcome the tricky gate, he will be very hard to beat.

20. General Beau (14) – $13
Jockey – Daniel Moor 52.5kg
Trainer – Mathew Ellerton

Another 3YO colt who is racing in good form. Ran a big race in the G1 William Reid, before racing wide and being beaten less than a length by Extreme Warrior. Last start he ran home well in the G2 Tobin Bronze here at Morphettville, where the leader got away with murder. Meets Extreme Warrior 4kg better off here, and is a proven topliner who can win with luck.

21e. Manhattan Times (11) – $20
Jockey – Jessica Eaton 52kg
Trainer – Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas

Locally trained 3YO who gains a start with the scratching of September Run. He has really hit his straps this prep and comes out of the same race as General Beau last start, where he ran some very good late sectionals to finish third. Drawn to get a nice trail and is more than capable of finishing in the money with his lethal turn of foot.

Final Word

A capacity field of in-form sprinters will greet the starter for this year’s G1 The Goodwood. Some speed comes out of the race with the scratching of In The Boat, but providing there’s no distinct track bias, each and every runner should get their chance.

Newmarket runner up, The Astrologist, continues to race well in good company. He wasn’t far away in the William Reid, after racing in restricted room in the straight, before just going down in the Vobis Gold Sprint last start under the big weight. He should get a nice trail behind the leaders here, and at the odds looks a good each way bet.

Three time G1 winner Behemoth returned from a spell in the D C McKay Stakes and was good to the line with 62kg, after finding trouble early in the straight. He’s a three time winner second up and has a good record here. He finished second in this race in 2019 and looks poised to go one better this year.

Race favourite, Extreme Warrior, was strong winning first up from a spell at Caulfield. He started favourite in last year’s G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, after two ultra impressive wins prior. Will need some luck early from the gate, but has to be respected.

Fellow 3YO’s Manhattan Times and General Beau look over the odds, as do Ironclad and Not An Option. They all possess a sharp turn of foot on their day, and are all capable of finishing in the money here. Former Singaporean, The Inferno, is another that can’t be overlooked after his last start effort, and will just need some luck from the inside draw to be competitive.

Best The Goodwood Tip: 8. The Astrologist – Each-way ($8.50/$2.90)
