2023 Tancred Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The Tancred Stakes is a 2400m Group 1, held under standard weight-for-age conditions at Rosehill Racecourse. With $1.5m in prize money up for grabs, it routinely produces a quality field, as we have yet again this year.

Looking at the market, Dabble has last year’s Melbourne Cup winner, Gold Trip, favourite at $4.20 just ahead of quality mare, Montefilia, at $4.80. Irish raider, Cleveland, is on the next line at $6.50 and Knights Order is not without a hope, currently at $9.00.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and there’s no real standouts according to the market. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2023 Tancred Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Gold Trip (13) – $4.20F
Jockey – Mark Zahra 59kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

2022 Melbourne Cup winner who was super first up in the Peter Young Stakes behind Steinem before failing to let down last Saturday in a leader dominated Ranvet Stakes. Clearly come through that run well and the added journey only enhances his chances here. The quality galloper of the field who can easily bounce back despite the wide alley.

2. Knights Order (6) – $9.00
Jockey – Tim Clark 59kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Wasn’t disgraced first up in the Chipping Norton behind Anamoe before leading and holding on quite well behind Protagonist last time out. Gets out to an ideal trip now third up and will land in front by default. Any rain will help but can win no matter the track rating.

3. Vow And Declare (15) – $11
Jockey – Nash Rawiller 59kg
Trainer – Danny O’Brien

2019 Melbourne Cup winner who has turned back the clock in recent starts. Won the Sandown Cup at the end of last prep and has returned with two good efforts behind Right You Are this time in. Barrier is no help but Nash is a genius in these longer races and he’s not without a hope.

4. Stockman (7) – $16
Jockey – Sam Clipperton 59kg
Trainer – Joseph Pride

Runner-up in this race last year who was ridden further forward last start and fought on gamely in the Sky High. Prior runs behind Anamoe were more or less barrier trials. Gets out to 2400m now which suits and he’s an absolute mudlark, which will come into play if the predicted rain falls. Each way hope.

5. Arapaho (3) – $11
Jockey – Rachel King 59kg
Trainer – Bjorn Baker

Went super in both the Apollo Stakes and Chipping Norton fresh this prep before a dominant win last start in the Canberra Cup. Will appreciate the further rise in trip here and is drawn to get a cosy run. Absolutely flying and deserves respect again here.

6. Explosive Jack (14) – $23
Jockey – John Allen 59kg
Trainer – Ciaron Maher & David Eustace

Won just about every Derby in the country as a three-year-old before going off the boil. Runs this prep have been promising and he was good last start when chasing home Arapaho in the Canberra Cup. Gets out to his pet trip now and could easily figure in the finish as he continues to progress with fitness.

7. Selino (5) – $126
Jockey – Tom Marquand 59kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Did nothing first up in the Parramatta Cup before dead-heating with the ambulance last start. Added journey should be in his favour but not racing well enough to be considered a live chance in this. Pass.

8. Sir Lucan (10) – $11
Jockey – Regan Bayliss 59kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

On the quick back up after being run down late in the N E Manion Cup last Saturday. His win prior was strong. He’ll roll forward again from the wide draw here along with his stablemate, Knights Order, and should be rock hard fit now. Will give a sight.

9. Cleveland (11) – $6.00
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy
Trainer – Joseph O’Brien

Lightly raced Irish entire who brings some solid form lines into this race, including a fast finishing second to Gear Up in the Ballyroan Stakes two back. Has won on heavy ground and up to 3749m, suggesting he’ll have no problems running out a strong 2400m first up here and looks a big threat to the locals. Watch the market.

10. King Frankel (8) – $13
Jockey – Tyler Schiller (a) 59kg
Trainer – Mark Newnham

Kept his winning form going with a solid effort first up in the Parramatta Cup before a close up fourth in the Sky High last start. No query on the rise in trip but he has to go to another level if he’s to win at G1 WFA level now. Willing to leave him out.

11. Saracen Knight (1) – $51
Jockey – Chad Schofield 59kg
Trainer – Danny O’Brien

Second of the Danny O’Brien gallopers who was disappointing first up in the Vic Cup behind Right You Are. Form last prep was solid over these longer trips and he’s well performed on all surfaces. Hard to see him winning but can improve at cricket score odds.

12. Alegron (12) – SCRATCHED
Jockey – Brenton Avdulla 58.5kg
Trainer – James Cummings

N/A.

13. Benaud (4) – SCRATCHED
Jockey – Brett Prebble 58.5kg
Trainer – John O’Shea

N/A.

14/ Montefilia (9) – $4.80
Jockey – Dylan Gibbons (a) 57kg
Trainer – David Payne

Charged home first up in the Chipping Norton before a game chase last Saturday behind Dubai Honour. 2400m third up is right up her alley and she handles all track conditions. Quality mare in good form. Hard to knock.

15e. Tappy’s Lad (2) – $101
Jockey – Joshua Parr 59kg
Trainer – Kerry Taplin

Former Kiwi turned Queenslander who made it two wins in a row last start at Eagle Farm over this trip. Will find this a lot tougher but is a gritty stayer who won’t disgrace himself.

Final Word

It’s not too often two Melbourne Cup winners line up in the same race, but that’s the case here, along with an intriguing international and a four time G1 winning mare. There doesn’t look a whole lot of tempo, with the Waterhouse/Bott pair most likely controlling proceedings and the track is expected to be in the soft to heavy range, taking into account the forecast over the coming days.

Top Tip: 2. Knights Order – as mentioned should land on speed without spending too much petrol and gets out to his pet trip now. Liked the way he ran through the line last start over 2000m, despite leading and being run down. He had arguably his best prep to date last time in work, finishing third in the Caulfield Cup over this trip and should be ready to fire here third up.

Biggest Danger: 14. Montefilia – is absolutely flying. She went super first up behind Anamoe before chasing home another star last time out in good late splits. The added journey suits here and she handles all conditions. Hard to see her not running top three.

Best Value/ Roughie: 5. Arapaho – is another who is in great form. He ran out of his skin in the Apollo and Chipping Norton behind Anamoe, before a dominant victory last start in the Canberra Cup. He’ll enjoy a cosy run behind the speed from the good gate here and should be right in the mix come the final furlong.

2022 Tancred Stakes Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

*Saturday 26th March: The rest of the race meeting has been abandoned. At this stage it is unknown where the remainder of the races will be rescheduled.*

*Sunday 27th March: It has been announced that the remaining races from the Rosehill meeting will be moved to Newcastle and take place on Monday 28th March.*

The Group 1 Tancred Stakes is a 2400m race, held under WFA conditions at Rosehill racecourse. The $1.5m feature is the only 2400m WFA G1 on the Australian racing calendar.

The winner of the Tancred Stakes will become exempt from the ballot for both the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the G1 Sydney Cup. Last year’s race was taken out by the ill-fated Sir Dragonet.

Looking at the market for this year’s Tancred Stakes, Dabble has last start Australian Cup winner Duais favourite at $2.90, just ahead of Spanish Mission at $4.00. Think It Over is next best at $4.40, and it’s out then to $10 about She’s Ideel.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and there are a few different form lines to take into account here. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Tancred Stakes along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Think It Over (3) – $4.40
Jockey – Nash Rawiller 59kg
Trainer – Kerry Parker

Genuine G1 contender, who was good last start in the Australian Cup. He had every chance there, but was beaten by a better horse on the day. He comes back to Rosehill, where he has a good record, and steps up to 2400m. I’m not convinced he’s an out and out stayer, but it’s hard to knock him, as he’s such an honest galloper. Needs the rain to stay away.

2. Spanish Mission (11) – $4.00
Jockey – James McDonald 59kg
Trainer – Peter G Moody

Entire who placed in last year’s Melbourne Cup. Led them up in the Australian Cup last start and fought on well to finish 3rd. Steps up to 2400m here which suits, and McDonald sticks. Will roll forward again from the wide gate, and should take a lot of running down.

3. The Chosen One (6) – $20
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 59kg
Trainer – Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman

Kiwi galloper who is no stranger to Australian racing. His form across the ditch has been good this prep, and is capable of continuing that good form here. He’s a winner over 2400m, but prefer him on top of the ground.

4. Stockman (5) – $12
Jockey – Sam Clipperton 59kg
Trainer – Joseph Pride

Mudlark, who was simply out sprinted first up in the G1 Chipping Norton Stakes. He came off the bridle a long way out last start, but managed to get the job done in the G3 Sky High. The step up in trip looks ideal, and he dead set swims. Has to be considered a chance at odds.

5. Great House (9) – $34 – Scratched
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy 59kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Has come back well with two good runs in the Parramatta Cup and Sky High Stakes. Steps up to G1 company here, but looks primed to run a big race third up and out to 2400m.

6. Angel of Truth (1) – $19
Jockey – William Pike 59kg
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes

On the quick back up after finishing 3rd in last week’s G1 Ranvet Stakes behind Montefilia. Will no doubt roll forward from the inside draw, and with the addition of the blinkers, will look to do it at both ends. Happy to go around him in this.

7. Sheraz (4) – $26
Jockey – Brenton Avdulla 59kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Former French galloper who has shown glimpses of promise in Australia. His two runs this prep have been ok, and he gets to a trip now where he can show his best. Look for improvement.

8. Avion Fury (8) – $126 – Scratched
Jockey – Reece Jones (a) 59kg
Trainer – Ian Finn

Almost got the job done first up at huge odds in BM78 grade. Big step up here, and out to 2400m second up is a query. Price is right.

9. Mightybeel (10) – $31
Jockey – Tommy Berry 58.5kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Good win two back in the Listed Parramatta Cup, before an even effort last start in the wet. Has good form at Rosehill and is a winner this trip, but may need to find a few lengths on his recent form to win a WFA G1 race.

10. She’s Ideel (2) – $10
Jockey – Rachel King 57kg
Trainer – Bjorn Baker

Flashed home to finish 2nd in the G1 Chipping Norton two runs ago, before finishing down the track last start in the Australian Cup. Gets back to Rosehill now, and steps up to 2400m which suits. The biggest positive for her here is the likeliness of a wet track. If the track is soft/heavy she is a genuine winning chance.

11. Duais (7) – $2.90F
Jockey – Joshua Parr 56.5kg
Trainer – Edward Cummings

Arguably should’ve won the G1 Chipping Norton second up, after running into backsides the entire Randwick straight. She made amends last start in the G1 Australian Cup, where she blew her rivals away. Steps up to 2400m, where she finished 2nd in the ATC Oaks as a 3YO, and has drawn well. Her heavy track form reads fair on paper, but the Chipping Norton was run on a heavy10, and she handled it well on that occasion. Looks the one they have to beat, after her last start annihilation.

Final Word

Wet tracks have become a staple in Sydney in recent weeks, and it looks as though we will be racing on another rain affected track here.

Last start Australian Cup winner Duais, looks the one they have to beat in this year’s Tancred Stakes. Her runs this prep have been excellent, and the step up to 2400m looks no issue.

Kerry Parker’s Think It Over is the best performed horse in the race. All three runs this prep have been solid, but the 2400m on rain affected ground looks a query to me.

Spanish Mission was good in the Australian Cup, and will be better suited up to 2400m, and She’s Ideel can improve sharply here back on a wet track.

Last start winner Stockman, and French import Sheraz, look the best of the roughies.

As mentioned above, it’s hard to go past Duais, based on her form this prep and her last start win. She put her rivals away in brilliant fashion, and looks well suited again here. If the track remains fair and not too heavy, I feel confident she will win again. If the track does deteriorate, She’s Ideel becomes a big danger.

Best Tancred Stakes Tip: 11. Duais – Win ($2.90)
