2022 Stradbroke Handicap Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The Stradbroke Handicap is a 1400m Group 1, held at Eagle Farm, and highlights a massive day of racing that also features the G1 J J Atkins and G2 The Q22. The $1.5m contest is without doubt the premier race of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, and has a long, high quality honour roll. Last year’s Stradbroke was taken out by iron-mare, Tofane, with Craig Williams in the saddle.

The Gregory Hickman trained, Eleven Eleven, has been well backed with Dabble and is currently the $6.00 favourite for this year’s race. Lightly raced gelding, Ayrton, has drifted to $7.50, and last start Kingsford-Cup winner and local hope, Apache Chase, is a $10 chance. Former Queensland heavyweight, Alligator Blood, and the Tony Gollan trained, Isotope, are also well respected in the market, and are just over double figures odds.

It’s clear to see just how tough this year’s Stradbroke Handicap lineup looks. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Stradbroke Handicap along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Private Eye (1) – $15
Jockey – Brenton Avdulla 57kg
Trainer – Joseph Pride

Covered ground last start in the Kingsford-Smith and still found the line well. The extra 100m suits, and if he can find clear air from the inside gate he’s more than capable of winning this.

2. Laws Of Indices (13) – $16
Jockey – James McDonald 56.5kg
Trainer – Annable Neasham

Another who never got on the track last start in the Kingsford-Smith but was solid through the line. Drawn a bit better here and McDonald takes the reins. Each-way chance.

3. Apache Chase (3) – $10
Jockey – Jim Byrne 55.5kg
Trainer – Desleigh Forster

Local star who led from barrier to box last start in the Kingsford-Smith. Has a brilliant record here at Eagle Farm and loves the 1400m. Drawn well and will be in the race for a long way.

4. Eleven Eleven (5) – $6.00F
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 55.5kg
Trainer – Gregory Hickman

Ate up the ground late last start behind Apache Chase. Ticks a lot of boxes here including the good gate and Bowman sticks with him. Looks very hard to beat.

5. Alligator Blood (21) – $12
Jockey – Tim Clark 55kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Returned to racing and returned to form last start in the BRC Sprint, where he was just outgunned by Soxagon. Has a good second up record and enjoys racing here at Eagle Farm, but will need some luck from the bad gate.

6. Soxagon (11) – $14
Jockey – Brad Stewart 54.5kg
Trainer – Mark Currie

Made it two from two this prep last start when he won the BRC Sprint. This looks his toughest test to date but he’s a talented sprinter who is racing in career best form. Respect.

7. Emerald Kingdom (2) – $41
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy 54.5kg
Trainer – Robert Heathcote

Beat Apache Chase at Rockhampton before racing wide in the BRC Sprint last start. Drawn to get a soft run and wasn’t far away in this race last year. Chance at odds.

8. Wild Planet (14) – $91
Jockey – Brock Ryan 54.5kg
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes

Got back and didn’t do much in the Kingsford-Smith last start, after an even effort in the Victory Stakes. Capable sprinter on his day, but hard to have him on recent form.

9. Rothfire (20) – $13
Jockey – Tommy Berry 54.5kg
Trainer – Robert Heathcote

Racing well this prep without cracking it for a win. Is a G1 winner here at Eagle Farm over 1400m and despite the bad gate, shouldn’t be far away.

10. I Am Superman (18) – $31
Jockey – Sam Clipperton 54.5kg
Trainer – Peter & Paul Snowden

Sydney-sider who resumes here off a short freshen. Recent form is ok and he’s trialled well leading into this but he hasn’t won a race for over a year now. The barrier draw has done him no favours and it’s hard to have him in the numbers.

11. Ayrton (19) – $7.50
Jockey – Jamie Kah 54kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Talented gelding who didn’t stay, nor handle the wet track last start in the Hollindale. Drops back to 1400m here which is a tick but will need some early luck from the wide draw. Should be competitive but the market has him short enough for mine.

12. Bandersnatch (12) – $71
Jockey – Jason Collett 54kg
Trainer – Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes

Won the Tamworth Cup two back carrying the grandstand before a lacklustre performance at Scone last start. Will appreciate the weight drop but, on the flip side, has to take on a quality G1 field. Not the worst but hard to see him winning.

13. Niccanova (16) – $61
Jockey – Anthony Allen 53.5kg
Trainer – Steve Tregea

Toowoomba warhorse who ran a bottler in the BRC Sprint before finishing midfield in the Moreton Cup last Saturday. Beaten 3L in this race last year, and a similar effort could be on the cards here.

14. Buffalo River (10) – $41
Jockey – Rachel King 53.5kg
Trainer – Michael Moroney

Led them up and stayed on ok in the BRC Sprint last start. Will roll forward again here and with the light weight is capable of sticking on and running a place.

15. Isotope (4) – $11
Jockey – William Pike 52.5kg
Trainer – Tony Gollan

Finished midfield last start in the Kingsford-Smith after a similar effort in the Doomben 10,000 the start prior. Has come up with a good gate here and has no weight on her back. The Wizard (Pike) won the G1 feature last weekend and will be out for more blood here. Each-way chance.

16. Brooklyn Hustle (22) – $26
Jockey – Craig Williams 52kg
Trainer – Jason Warren & Dean Krongold

Flashy mare who has sucked punters in (including myself) time after time recently. Will go back from the wide gate and finish hard, but there’s no spot for her in the top four this time.

17. Villana (8) – $19
Jockey – Stephanie Thornton 50.5kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Lightly raced 3YO colt who was good in winning the Fred Best last start. Big step up here but only has to carry a feather on his back. Capable of finishing in the top half dozen.

18. Startantes (15) – $19
Jockey – Taylor Marshall 50kg
Trainer – Robert Heathcote

Ran on well in the Victory Stakes before a couple of just ok runs in 3YO company. Racing a bit below her best in her last couple and will need to lift if she’s to win this, but at her best is capable.

19e. Scallopini (7) – $41
Jockey – Boris Thornton 53.5kg
Trainer – Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted

Local sprinter who was nabbed on the line in the Victory Stakes before finishing close up in the Kingsford-Smith. Should get a good run from the low draw but might find a few of these a bit sharp.

20e. Ranch Hand (23) – $61
Jockey – Jay Ford 50.5kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Top-class 3YO colt who spanked his rivals last start here at Eagle Farm. Has had a nice trial in the meantime to keep him ticking over, but has come up with the outside gate which makes things tough.

21e. Flying Crazy (17) – $51
Jockey – N/A 50.5kg
Trainer – Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou

Strung two Listed wins together before finishing midfield behind Vilana last start. Looks a real talent but not sure that is the right form to win this.

22e. Tycoonist (9) – $91
Jockey – N/A 51.5kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Was held up at a vital stage last start in the BRC Sprint last start, and arguably should’ve won. On his best form he’d be competitive in this but might struggle to get a run.

23e. Frankie Pinot (6) – $26
Jockey – Barend Vorster 51.5kg
Trainer – Tony & Calvin McEvoy

Made it two wins on the hop when he won the Wangoom at Warrnambool, before a big run last start in The Goodwood. Shame he’s fifth emergency, as he looks a real live winning chance on recent form.

Final Word

This year’s Stradbroke Handicap has brought together a capacity field of quality horses that will greet the starter in a bid to take home the $900k winners cheque, and etch their name into the history books.

Warwick Farm galloper, Eleven Eleven, certainly ticks a lot of boxes and looks destined to do just that. His last start effort in the Kingsford-Smith was very good and he should enjoy a nice run in transit from the good gate. Bowman sticks and he looks primed for this third up.

Epsom Handicap winner, Private Eye, covered more ground than Burke and Wills in the Kingsford-Smith and still managed to run the second fastest last 200m of the race. He’ll be put to sleep from the inside gate and only needs a bit of luck in the straight to be winning. He looks ready to run a big race and I believe he’s going better than his recent form on paper suggests.

Local mare, Isotope, and Toowoomba gelding, Soxagon, will be more than competitive. Isotope is another who is going better than her form on paper may indicate, whilst Soxagon is in career best form and looking to make this win number three on the trot.

Laws of Indices and Startantes won’t be far away and are worth including at big odds, and I’m happy to go around Ayrton at the price. He’s dropping back to 1400m here, after a failure in the Hollindale (1800m) last start, and comes up with an outside gate.
