2023 Rosehill Guineas Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The first of five Group 1’s on Saturday at Rosehill Gardens will see the three-year-olds do battle over 2000m in the Rosehill Guineas. The $600k set weights feature is only nine horses strong but a Victoria Derby winner, Caulfield Guineas runner up and progressive Godolphin gelding are amongst the final acceptances.

Looking at the market, Dabble has the Godolphin trained gelding, Pericles, favourite at $2.80, off the back of a super win at Sandown last start. Elliptical is currently next best at $4.40, whilst Lindermann, $6.50, and Matcha Latte, $7.50, round out those in single figures.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and tactics could play a key role here. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2023 Rosehill Guineas along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Manzoice (7) – $10
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy 56.5kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Victoria Derby winner who got back and found the line well late in the piece first up. Will appreciate the step up in trip here and has a good record at Rosehill, but may need one more run to tip him off.

2. Elliptical (1) – $4.40
Jockey – Mark Zahra 56.5kg
Trainer – Anthony & Sam Freedman

Charged home to take out the CS Hayes first up at Flemington before being ridden on speed and weakening late in the Australian Guineas last start. Will more than likely be ridden on speed again here from the low draw and gets visors on for the first time as well as a tongue tie. Both runs at ten furlongs were solid last prep and if he can find his best form he’ll be very hard to hold out.

3. Lindermann (9) – $6.50
Jockey – Nash Rawiller 56.5kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Led and ran his rivals into the ground two starts ago here at Rosehill before finishing second in the Randwick Guineas last start. Gets to 2000m now, which is a bit to a query, but he was placed over 1800m at Flemington last prep. Recent form keeps him in contention.

4. Matcha Latte (5) – $7.50
Jockey – Tyler Schiller (a) 56.5kg
Trainer – Mark Newnham

Consistent colt who ran a bottler first up in the Hobartville before finishing midfield in the Randwick Guineas last start. Was beaten less than a length in the Spring Champion last prep at 2000m and is ideally drawn here. Can’t rule him out off the back of one run alone and can easily finish back in the money here.

5. Pericles (6) – $2.80F
Jockey – James McDonald 56.5kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Went good first up in the Autumn Stakes, providing it was a sit and sprint, before a dominant victory last start in the Autumn Classic over 1800m. Looks a progressive staying gelding with plenty of raw ability and should be cherry ripe for this third up. Should have no excuses here.

6. Williamsburg (3) – $10
Jockey – Ryan Maloney 56.5kg
Trainer – Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou

Ran on well to finish fourth in the Hobartville two back before another solid effort last time out in the Randwick Guineas. Looks ready for the 2000m now, where he was beaten 2.3L in the Spring Champion last prep, and is drawn to get a cosy run. One of the better winning chances.

7. Brosnan (8) – $16
Jockey – Michael Dee 56.5kg
Trainer – Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou

Has caught the eye at all three runs back this prep, including last Saturday in the Phar Lap Stakes. Looks to be crying out for 2000m and in form hoop, Michael Dee, sticks with him. Definite top three hope.

8. Ausbred Rising Sun (4) – $19
Jockey – Brett Prebble 56.5kg
Trainer – Brad Widdup

Sent around $1.35 at Newcastle two back and won accordingly before a good effort last time out in the Autumn Classic when finishing third. Should land a good spot from the draw and will have no problems with the trip. Each-way hope.

9. Northern Barrage (2) – $101
Jockey – Damian Lane 56.5kg
Trainer – Michael Kent

Covered ground last start in the Autumn Classic but ground home to finish a solid sixth. Run prior was similar in BM70 grade. Not sure he can turn the tables on Pericles here but should have no problems running a strong 2000m.

Final Word

A small but competitive field is set to do battle here and it’s hard to really single one out. Banking on the gear changes doing the trick with Elliptical and happy to go with him on top.

His first up win in the CS Hayes was very good, before a more positive ride in the Australian Guineas last start saw him weaken late. He won’t have to spend a penny from the inside gate here and both runs at 2000m last Spring were good. Feel he has a class edge on most of his rivals here and the visors might just do the trick.

Hard not to be impressed by Pericles’ win last start in the Autumn Classic. The 2000m suits here and he should get every opportunity in the small field. Out of the same race, Ausbred Rising Sun, has to be considered an each-way hope as well. He looks to have plenty of staying potential and is drawn to get the run of the race.

Brosnan is the other runner who deserves a mention. All three runs this prep have been full of merit and he looks to be crying out for the ten furlongs, as does his stablemate, Williamsburg.

2022 Rosehill Guineas Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

The Rosehill Guineas is a Group 1 race, run under set weights conditions for three year olds. Held on Golden Slipper day, the $700k feature has long been a staple on the Sydney Autumn Racing calendar, having first been run in 1910.

It is also the second leg of the Sydney Triple Crown for 3YO’s, the first being the G1 Randwick Guineas, won this year by Converge, and the last being the G1 Australian Derby.

Looking at the market for this year’s Rosehill Guineas, Dabble has Godolphin colt Anamoe favourite at $2.00, ahead of last start G1 victor Converge at $3.60. Boom colt Profondo is on the next line at $5.50, and Forgot You is the only other running in the market at $9.00.

However, as we’ve seen in recent weeks, the 3YO’s this season look an even bunch. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Rosehill Guineas along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Anamoe (9) – $2.00F
Jockey – James McDonald 56.5kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Cox Plate runner up, who was good last start in the Randwick Guineas behind Converge. He took a while to wind up on that occasion, which suggests the step up to 2000m may now be what he’s looking for. McDonald will be looking to find cover from the outside gate, and he should be finishing hard.

2. Converge (8) – $3.60
Jockey – Tim Clark 56.5kg
Trainer – Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

Scratched from the G1 George Ryder to run in this. Got the job done last start in the G1 Randwick Guineas, beating favourite Anamoe. Tim Clark gave him a 10/10 ride on that occasion, and it proved the difference in the end. He’s untried past a mile, but he relaxes well, and should be able to show his customary turn of foot yet again.

3. Profondo (6) – $5.50
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 56.5kg
Trainer – Richard Litt

Disappointed first-up in the G1 Australian Guineas, where he did a lot wrong. Finds himself back in Sydney, over 2000m where he destroyed his rivals last prep in the G1 Spring Champion. Bowman takes over in the saddle, and he’s more than capable of hitting back hard in this race.

4. Forgot You (4) – $9.00
Jockey – Mark Zahra 56.5kg
Trainer – Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young

Got to the line well first-up in the G3 CS Hayes Stakes behind Pinstriped, before again getting home hard in the G1 Australian Guineas last time out. The step up to 2000m looks ideal, where he is already a G2 winner. Drawn well, and looks hard to beat on his recent form.

5. Raging Bull (5) – $51
Jockey – Sam Clipperton 56.5kg
Trainer – David Payne

Hasn’t been far away in the Hobartville and Randwick Guineas, since resuming from a break. Ran 4th in last year’s Victorian Derby, which suggests the step up in trip will help. Looks the best of the roughies.

6. Sword Point (7) – Scratched
Jockey – Nash Rawiller 56.5kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Finished 4th in BM78 grade last start, coming off a short freshen. Prior to that was dominant at this track/distance in weaker grade. Will trip fitter here, but may struggle to measure up class wise.

7. Sinba (1) – $31
Jockey – Jason Collett 56.5kg
Trainer – Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou

Got back and made little impression last start in the G1 Randwick Guineas. Steps up to 2000m now where he is untried, and would need to improve on his last effort to be competitive.

8. Three Wise Men (3) – $126
Jockey – Tom Sherry 56.5kg
Trainer – Edward Cummings

Has found the line ok in both runs this prep, albeit in BM64 and Class 1 grade. Untried this trip, and would need to find considerably on his recent efforts.

9. Mediaro (2) – $61
Jockey – Jay Ford 56.5kg
Trainer – Matthew Smith

Canberra maiden winner two back, who was only fair last start in BM64 grade. Lightly raced, but that form doesn’t look strong enough here.

Final Word

This year’s Rosehill Guineas looks to have four main chances, those being the runners at the top of the page.

Anamoe was strong from the back in the Randwick Guineas last start over a mile, and looks as though the 2000m here will suit. He was placed in the Cox Plate last Spring, and is a deserved favourite in this.

Converge was able to get the better of Anamoe last start in the Randwick Guineas, and will be out to do the same again here. As mentioned, he’s a relaxed customer with a lethal turn of foot, which may well see him very effective over 10 furlongs. Looks a good chance of taking out the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

Boom colt Profondo was a complete forget run first up in the Australian Guineas for mine. He wanted to hang badly, and is capable of improving big time here.

Also out of the Australian Guineas, Forgot You looks primed to run a big race third up here. He won the G2 Vase at Moonee Valley last spring over 2040m, and has drawn well in this. He is my on top selection at good odds, in a race that looks to have four main winning hopes.

Raging Bull looks the best roughie for anyone wanting to throw some value into exotics.

Best Rosehill Guineas Tip: 4. Forgot You – Each Way ($9.00/$2.10)
