2022 Rosehill Gold Cup Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

Introduced to the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival in 2019, the Rosehill Gold Cup is a 2000m handicap held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse and carries a $750k prize money purse.

Although not a Group 1, the ten furlong feature has attracted a strong group of middle distance gallopers since its first running and this year’s race is no exception.

Looking at the market, Dabble has in form gelding, Quality Time, favourite at $4.60 off the back of a hat-trick of wins. Godolphin trained mare, Honeycreeper, is a $6.50 chance and last start St Leger winner, Stockman, and UK visitor, Bois D’argent, are also in commission at $7.00.

However, we know with horse racing that anything can happen and there is plenty of depth in this capacity field. So, we have dissected each of the horses’ chances for you and provided our horse racing tips! Read on below to find our runner by runner preview of the 2022 Rosehill Gold Cup along with The Shark’s best tips.

1. Stockman (13) – $7.00
Jockey – Sam Clipperton 59.5kg
Trainer – Joseph Pride

Broke through for a well deserved win last start in the St Leger at Randwick over 2600m. Drops back to the 2000m here and has his fair share of weight but is a classy galloper and will be strong late, especially if they run along early.

2. Polly Grey (7) – $12
Jockey – Hugh Bowman 59kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

*This horse has since been scratched.*

Honest effort first up in the Angst after leading them up. Has a brilliant record here at Rosehill over 2000m and Bowman sticks, but the drying track may turn out to be her nemesis.

3. Yonkers (9) – $12
Jockey – Frankie Dettori 58kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Never got warm first up behind Cascadian before an improved effort in the Coongy last start at Caulfield. Will appreciate the firmer footing and can run a cheeky race at double figure odds.

4. Kukeracha (5) – $31
Jockey – Jason Collett 57kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Hasn’t done much in three runs back this prep. Gets a tongue tie for the first time here which may spark some improvement but it’s hard to see him winning on recent form.

5. Pinarello (11) – $17
Jockey – Kerrin McEvoy 57kg
Trainer – Roger James & Robert Wellwood

Queensland Derby winner who finished midfield in the Craven Plate last start. He came off the bit a long way from home on that occasion suggesting the added journey will suit. Question is, does he want further than the 2000m?

6. Lord Ardmore (17) – $19
Jockey – Tim Clark 55kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

*This horse has since been scratched.*

Never got on the track last start behind Ellsberg and did well to stick on as strong as he did. Form prior to a freshen up was very good around Francesco Guardi and Durston, and he’s unbeaten here at Rosehill. If Clark can weave some magic from the wide gate he’s a definite winning hope.

7. Bois D’argent (12) – $7.00
Jockey – Jamie Spencer 54kg
Trainer – Marco Botti

Newmarket-based galloper who brings some interesting French form lines into this race. Very hard to line up the strength of that form compared to the horses in this race, but he has a brilliant record and is yet to miss a place in five runs over 2000m. Big watch.

8. Quality Time (1) – $4.60F
Jockey – Tommy Berry 54kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Former German galloper who has really found form this prep and comes into this looking for four straight wins. Will find this tougher than his last start Port Macquarie Cup win but is unbeaten at 2000m and his Rosehill win prior was dominant. Deserved favourite.

9. Pappalino (3) – $126
Jockey – Regan Bayliss 54kg
Trainer – Matthew Smith

Got back and found nothing first up behind Quality Time here at Rosehill. Has a good second up record but this race looks a bit beyond him on recent efforts.

10. Star Of India (8) – $11
Jockey – Brenton Avdulla 54kg
Trainer – Annabel Neasham

Another former international galloper who wasn’t far away at G3 company first up in France. Again, it’s hard to line that form up, but he’s with the right stable and is well bred. Watch the market.

11. Main Stage (14) – Scratched
Jockey – N/A (54kg)
Trainer – Gwenda Markwell

SCRATCHED

12. Hezashocka (6) – $13
Jockey – Jamie Kah 53.5kg
Trainer – Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Found the line well in the Craven Plate last start behind Cascadian at Randwick. If you put a line through his Turnbull run, his recent form is good and he should enjoy a nice run in transit here. Looks a good each-way hope.

13. Dashing Willoughby (4) – $126
Jockey – Kacie Adams 53kg
Trainer – Sam Kavanagh

*This horse has since been scratched.*

Beaten 8L in the Port Macquarie Cup first up. Gets a big weight relief here but will need every ounce of it. Not keen.

14. Kiss The Bride (2) – $41
Jockey – Tyler Schiller (a) 52.5kg
Trainer – Bjorn Baker

Beaten 100 yards in the Hill Stakes last start and has since been back to the trials, where she looked good. Hard to tip her off the back of her last couple but if she can recapture her form from earlier this prep she’d be in the mix.

15. Honeycreeper (15) – $6.50
Jockey – Rachel King 52kg
Trainer – James Cummings

Pass mark first up before a brilliant second last start, where she was just outbobbed by Hope In Your Heart. Step up to 2000m is a tick and she gets in well here with 52kg. Big chance provided the track isn’t leaderish.

16. Toomuchtobear (10) – $26
Jockey – Jay Ford 52kg
Trainer – Chris Waller

Not much went right last start at Randwick behind Ellsberg. Much better suited back out to 2000m here and gets in light. Capable of bobbing up in the placings.

17. Athabascan (16) – $41
Jockey – Reece Jones (a) 52kg
Trainer – John O’Shea

Former French-trained galloper who resumes here for the O’Shea yard. Has a tricky gate to overcome and suggest the market could be the best lead on his winning chances.

Final Word

This year’s Rosehill Gold Cup looks an even race and will see some interesting internationals making their Australian debuts. The weather in Sydney hasn’t been too bad for a change and the track should be in good nick come Saturday.

Had a hard time splitting a couple at good odds here. Lord Ardmore never got on the track last start and will appreciate getting back out to 2000m. His form prior was very good around the likes of Francesco Guardi and Durston, and he’s three from three at Rosehill. He’ll need some luck from the outside gate but can improve sharply in this.

Victorian galloper, Hezashocker, is the other one. He made good late ground last start behind Cascadian in the Craven Plate and aside from his Turnbull run, his form has been very good this prep. He should get a good trail from the nice gate and gets Jamie Kah in the saddle with no weight.

Godolphin mare, Honeycreeper, was excellent last start chasing home Hope In Your Heart. The step up in trip suits and she will be charging late, as will last start winner, Stockman. Quality Time is flying and can easily make it four wins in a row here from the inside gate. Watch the market with both Bois D’argent and Star Of India.

2021 Rosehill Gold Cup Runner By Runner Preview, Odds & Tips

We’ve got a highly touted Cox Plate import headlining the field here for the Rosehill Gold Cup, will it take out the honours, or will the local talent be good enough? Find out in our Runner By Runner analysis!

1. Gold Trip (9) – $3.95
Jockey – T Clark
Trainer – Maher & Eustace

Exceptional pedigree, and we all know how good the European middle distance and staying types are. Was meant to be better than State Of Rest who won the Cox Plate last week. If he’s fit, he could be a moral.

2. Think It Over (3) – $3
Jockey – N Rawiller
Trainer – K Parker

You’d just about be declaring this galloper if Gold Trip wasn’t here. Has been a very consistent horse this preparation, and will be right in the finish. Looks short enough at the moment.

3. Shared Ambition (5) – $13
Jockey – L Magorrian
Trainer – C Waller

Has had the chance to turn over Think It Over multiple times this prep and hasn’t been able to, can’t see that changing here.

4. Yonkers (6) – $35
Jockey – G Schofield
Trainer – C Waller

Had its birthday when winning the Shannon Stakes two runs ago, would need lightning to strike twice to have a chance here.

5. Lion’s Roar (7) – $8.50
Jockey – H Bowman
Trainer – J O’Shea

Hasn’t quite made the transition from three to four, this looks a big test.

6. Sky Lab (4) – $8
Jockey – J Parr
Trainer – P Perry

Absolutely flew home in the Craven Plate behind Think It Over, clocking some huge sectional late. If it can improve again it will be in the finish at a nice each way price, goes in exotics.

7. Kukeracha (10) – $23
Jockey – J Collett
Trainer – C Waller

Deep in the prep and hasn’t looked up to it so far, not going to have a big say in the race.

8. Rock (1) – $13
Jockey – T Berry
Trainer – M, W, & J Hawkes

Had a big effort in the Epsom and then was hampered in the last 400m, could have a throw at the stumps each way if you’re a fan.

9. Soldier Of Love (2) – $41
Jockey – A Collett
Trainer – B Baker

Price tells the tale, not in this.

10. Young Rascal (11) – $126
Jockey – K O’Hara
Trainer – R & M Freedman

Could add a zero to the price and I still wouldn’t be interested.

11. Kiss The Bride (12) – $51
Jockey – J Ford
Trainer – B Baker

Would have to start running now to have a chance.

12. Mirann (8) – $41
Jockey – J V Overmeire
Trainer – J O’Shea

Not up to this.

Final Say

There’s an element of the unknown here with the international raider Gold Trip. If it is fit and ready to go, it will likely just win against the B or C Grade middle distance horses in the field. We’re on it’s side.
