The Caulfield Carnival rolls on, and there’s a competitive day of midweek racing headlined by the Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m). Let’s have a look at a few that could boost our banks before a big Caulfield Cup program on Saturday.
Caulfield
Race 2 – Coongy Cup – 2000m
A golden ticket into Saturday’s Caulfield Cup is up for grabs here, with Al Galayel in career best form this preparation, having beaten Orderofthegarter two runs back and making a mess of his opposition in the JRA Cup at Moonee Valley last start.
It’s tough to tip against him as his two biggest rivals in the market – Django Freeman and Nonconformist – turned in very poor performances last start and would have to lift significantly.
Verdict: I’ll be having a bet on Al Galayel at $2.50.

Race 5 – Benchmark 84 – 2407m
This looks like a bit of a match race between Saracen Knight and Cadre Du Noir. Saracen Knight grew wings to win over 2000m here at Caulfield last start and looks like it will eat up the 2400m.
However, at the better price, Cadre Du Noir looks like the better option after an ill-fated trip to Sydney, he is reunited with Ben Melham and should be able to lead without much trouble and looks very tough to run down.
Verdict: I’ll be backing Cadre Du Noir at $3.90.
Ben Melham like a statue, didn't move. Cadre Du Noir absolutely brained them. This is a good horse… @cmaherracing pic.twitter.com/HSIRkaLHHl

Warwick Farm
Race 7 – Benchmark 78 – 1200m
An open betting race here with plenty prominent in the market, with the in-form Emanate looking to complete a hattrick of wins this prep.
She stalked the leader last start and extended away in impressive fashion, and is down in the weights now that she’s taking on the boys this time around.
Verdict: I’ll be backing Emanate at $4.80.
