Shadow Hero and Castelvecchio fought out the finish in a classic last year, and this year’s Spring Champion Stakes also features two rising stars fighting it out for favouritism in the market.

Will one of them win, or will something at bigger odds get the better of them? Let’s take a look at each runner in the 2020 Spring Champion Stakes.

1 – Cherry Tortoni – $6.50 ???

Burst onto the scene in the winter with a string of wins, and has resumed well so far this prep, getting a fair way back and hitting the line strongly on his way to a VRC Derby grand final. The step up to 2000m should suit and I think he is right in this, and at the price, is a very good bet.

2 – Global Quest

Scratched

3 – Love Tap – $3.50 ???

Was ultra impressive when winning the Gloaming Stakes, didn’t get out of the gates totally cleanly and still led all the way to win. Should be able to either lead or box seat here, and even though this is a far better field, looks more than capable of winning this with the map and his ability.

4 – Street Dancer – $31 ?

Another out of the Gloaming, wasn’t in the same class as Love Tap, but hit the line strongly and looks like it’ll enjoy the step up in trip. Worth including in exotics at the big price.

5 – Bucharest – $20 ?

Also stuck on well in the Gloaming, hitting the line strongly and looking like it will eat up the extra distance. Could run a place with some luck in transit.

6 – Lion’s Roar – $21

Form around Mo’unga at Newcastle and a few impressive wins at short odds. Hard to knock what it’s done, but it’s a fair climb from a Benchmark 64 at Newcastle to winning this at Group 1 level.

7 – Achiever – $46

Came home well in the Gloaming and may show an improved performance, but will need to be a lot better to have a say here.

8 – Albarado

Scratched

9 – Choir – $21

I think this colt is crying out for more ground and finds the 2000m here in a big plus. I think he could be a smoky for the VRC Derby and will watch with interest here.

10 – Wertheimer – $17

Has been running reasonably well so far this prep but would need to improve lengths here.

11 – Socrates – $35 ??

Did a stack of work in the run at Kembla to win, and looked impressive doing so. This is obviously a massive rise in class, but I think he could run a place at the big odds with some luck.

12 – Gorshin – $201

The price probably says it all.

13 – Montefilia – $3.40 ???

Caused an upset in the Flight Stakes last week and has always looked like she wants 2000m plus. If she backs up properly and isn’t flat, she’s going to be very tough to beat, but she will be giving Love Tap a bit of a head start with her racing pattern.

14 – Miravalle – $17

Hasn’t been close so far, even though the race panned out horribly for her in the Flight Stakes. Would need to show a fair bit of improvement.

15 – Favreau – $21 ?

Came home really well in the Gloaming and may be worth throwing into wider exotics.

Tip: 1-3-13-11

From Muswellbrook to the Melbourne Cup, Will is mad about all things racing and sport. Spent countless hours in the backyard as a child pretending to be Glenn McGrath, and has been known to get deadly late swing with a taped tennis ball.
