Another of Racing NSW’s pop up races, we saw The Invitation for the first time in 2021. In an attempt to compete with Melbourne’s Spring Carnival, Racing NSW came up with this 1400m race for fillies and mares, with only the 12 that are extended an invitation by Racing NSW able to compete. The race in 2022 will be held on Saturday 22nd of October at Randwick Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2021, it was won by Icebath.

While this race isn’t a Group One, there is $2M on offer for those competing, with $1M of that going to the winner. It often makes it a Grand Final for most of these fillies and mares for the Spring, attempting to pull some of the best middle-distance mares away from races like the Empire Rose Stakes and Kennedy Cantala Stakes, which are both held at Flemington a week later.

The Invitation is a new addition to Sydney’s Everest Carnival and it is another headline race with big name runners that punters want to bet on! Our expert tipsters will put together a short list of The Invitation tips to look out for in the leadup to the big race.

As nominations for the 2022 The Invitation are still open, it is hard to provide any updates at this time. However, as the Spring Carnival gets going, the horses that are targeting this race will become clearer and we will be able to provide you with updates. Is Previous The Invitation Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Given there has been just running of The Invitation, we are unable to tell if previous form in the race leads to future success. However, look out for the likes of Icebath, Rocha Clock, Forbidden Love and Entriviere in 2022, as those four were the mares to fill out the First Four in the 2021 race.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in The Invitation?

Entriviere was the $2.40 favourite in the inaugural edition of The Invitation, but could only manage 4th place. However, don’t look too far down in the odds as Icebath was the $6 second-favourite when winning the race! They were the only two runners in the race that jumped with single-figure odds.

Icebath won the race when 5th up during the Spring, however she had not won a race in her previous four runs. In fact, she came 9th in her start before The Invitation, which was in the Epsom Handicap.

Age

Given there has been just one running of The Invitation, there isn’t a lot of data to go off. However, three of the top four in the 2021 running of the race were five-year-olds. Icebath (1st), Rocha Clock (2nd) and Entriviere (4th) were all five-year-olds, while Forbidden Love (3rd) was a four-year-old.

Weight

Given the set weights + penalties conditions of The Invitation, there isn’t much variance in the weights carried by runners. However, Icebath carried 57kg, which was the lightest weight outside of the three-year-old, Startantes.

Long before The Invitation field is officially announced – online bookies will open early markets, or all-in markets, for The Invitation betting. This is prime time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on strong contenders for the 2022 The Invitation at double-digit odds.

Once the bookies release the 2022 The Invitation odds, they will obviously fluctuate frequently in the lead up to the race, especially when we have a better idea of which horses will be targeting the race and their form leading into the race.

Punting early on these markets can find you a favourite at prices of $10 or more, which will retain you a much higher return on investment. However, there is increased risk with doing this and you should be well aware.

Depending on when you place a futures bet on the 2022 The Invitation, your horse may not even run but you won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are betting when it says ‘Before Noms’, you have the security of receiving your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

The 2022 Invitation odds are out, and Espiona is currently the $6.00 favourite, ahead of Forbidden Love and Snapdancer who are both on the second line of betting at $8.00. Here are the current odds, courtesy of Neds, as of mid-August:

Given the $2M on offer, including $1M for the winner, The Invitation field is packed with the best fillies and mares that both Australia and New Zealand have. The Invitation field for 2022 will be announced on the Tuesday before the race, which means it will be announced on Tuesday, October 18th.

With the race yet to be run, we still don’t know what The Invitation results for 2022 will be! However, check back in after the race and we will have all of the information on how the big race went and what the results are.

Looking back at last year, Icebath was able to overcome the widest barrier, find a back to follow and burst home for the win. She finished over a length better than Rocha Clock, Forbidden Love and Entriviere, who fought out the placings and finished in that order.

Entriviere, the short-priced favourite, ran some unusual tactics by going wide and leading, preventing her from showing her usual turn-of-foot. This opened the door for others to swoop and Icebath did just that, coming from near last but always having a trail into the straight, where she proved too good over the top.
