The Hunter is a $1million handicap race held at Newcastle Racecourse in New South Wales. It is raced over 1300m and in 2020 will be run on Saturday, November 14.

Savatiano won the inaugural running of The Hunter, which was in 2019. Tactical Advantage finished second for the Kris Lees stable, with Bon Amis placing third. Savatiano did not race again in 2019, however, in 2020 won the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes and ran second in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes.

The Hunter was yet another edition to The Everest carnival, as Racing NSW continues to bolster their spring schedule. The race takes its name from the Hunter Valley, which, of course, Newcastle is a part of. The Hunter is the feature race of a stand-alone metropolitan Saturday meeting for Newcastle.

In 2019, Savatiano clocked 1:15.76 to win The Hunter from Tactical Advantage and Bon Amis. The time was also the Newcastle 1300m track record, which was previously held by Kenny’s World.
