The Hunter Introduction

The Hunter is a recently added race on the NSW calendar to compete with the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival. While this race isn’t technically a Group 1, the amount of prizemoney available means that some of the best regional horses in Australia come to compete in the 1,300m race. In 2021, The Hunter will be held on Saturday 13th November at Newcastle Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2020, it was won by Sweet Deal.

The Hunter, which was introduced in 2019, is a $1M handicap race held at Newcastle Racecourse in New South Wales. It is raced over 1,300m and in 2021 will be run on Saturday, November 13th.

Savatiano won the inaugural running of The Hunter, rounding out a four-run preparation with a pillar-to-post win. Sweet Deal came out on top in 2020, after an average preparation leading up, and won by a length over his rivals. Each of the winners had previously won at group level, showing the quality of The Hunter field and races each year.

The Hunter was yet another edition to The Everest carnival, as Racing NSW continues to bolster their Spring schedule. The race takes its name from the Hunter Valley, which, of course, Newcastle is a part of. The Hunter is the feature race of a stand-alone metropolitan Saturday meeting for Newcastle.

Given the race is still weeks away and the field is not set, we are yet to come up with our The Hunter tips for 2021, but be sure to read on below to get all of the information you need to know on the history and formlines for the race.

The Hunter Tips From Experts

Our tips are not out for The Hunter in 2021 as it is too far out from the event. But the good news is that when the final field for The Hunter is announced, we will provide guidance on each and every runner in the 2021 The Hunter.

You will find all this information below, when it becomes available. Stay tuned!

The Hunter Betting 2021

Given how new the race is, there aren’t many trends when looking at previous winners. However, when looking for The Hunter betting tips, we have found some key indicators that may help you find success.

Is Previous Form in The Hunter a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Given there have been just two runnings of the race, it is hard to get a good idea of this indicator. However, there have been four runners that have contested both editions of The Hunter.

Brave Song and Redouble were non-factors in both runnings of the race while Fiesta finished 4th in 2019 and just 7th in 2020. Tactical Advantage is the best of those four runners, finishing a narrow second in 2019 and then coming fourth in 2020. While there have been some horses to compete in both races, none of them have been able to succeed and it may be best to look elsewhere.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in The Hunter?

Well, one favourite has won and one favourite finished eighth and funnily enough, both times a Godolphin runner was the favourite. Savatiano was priced as $4.60 favourite when winning in 2019 while Ranier started as $6 favourite in 2020, but finished 4.85 lengths off the pace. Sweet Deal, when winning in 2020, was a slight outsider, being just sixth favourite at double digit odds, $10.

Formlines Heading into The Hunter

The two previous winners have had very separate lead-ups to winning The Hunter, however both won a group race during their preparation. Savatiano, who was fourth up in The Hunter, won the G2 Tristarc Stakes when second up, while Sweet Deal, who was fifth up with some freshens, won the G3 Toy Show Stakes first up.

Age

With just two years worth of data, it is hard to find trends but Savatiano was five-years-old when she won, while Sweet Deal was six-years-old when she won. That shows that older horses may have the better run of it when contesting the Newcastle Racecourse feature event.

Weight

Not much in the weights for this handicap race, with the two winners carrying 55.5kg and 56kg respectively. Both weights were middle of the road in terms of the varying amounts carried in their respective races, so there is no clear indication with this aspect.

The Hunter Best Bets

Our The Hunter best bets for 2021 are not out just yet, make sure you keep an eye out on this page as we will provide more details about our best bets when the final field is announced.

You will find our best bets below once available. Stay tuned!

The Hunter Odds 2021

Long before The Hunter field is officially announced – online bookies will open early markets, or all-in markets, for The Hunter betting. This is prime time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on strong contenders for the 2021 running of The Hunter at double-digit odds.

Once the bookies release The Hunter odds for this year’s race, they will obviously fluctuate frequently in the lead up, especially when we have a better idea of which horses will be targeting the race and how well they have gone in the lead-up.

Punting early on these markets can find you a favourite at prices of $10 or more, which will retain you a much higher return on investment. However, there is increased risk with doing this and you should be well aware.

Depending on when you place a futures bet on The Hunter, your horse may not even run but you won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are betting when it says ‘Before Noms’, you have the security of receiving your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

Unfortunately, The Hunter betting odds are yet to be released, but you can rest easy knowing that we will provide them for you as soon as they are released.

The Hunter Field 2021

With $1M on the line, The Hunter field is always packed with talented sprinters that can extend themselves further than the regular 1,200m distance. The 1,300m sprint is a unique distance and not all horses are able to do it, making this race even more tantalising. The Hunter field will be formally announced at the barrier draw, which is set to take place on Wednesday, November 10th.

With The 2021 Hunter field yet to be determined, let’s take a look back at the 2020 field, headlined by winner Sweet Deal:

The Hunter Results 2021

With the race yet to be run, we still don’t know what The Hunter results for 2021 will be! However, check back in after the race and we will have all of the information on how the big race went and what the results are.

Looking back at the 2020 race, Sweet Deal finished more than 1 length ahead of Special Reward, who was another length ahead of Asiago, who rounded out the minor placings. Sweet Deal pushed forward from barrier four, settling seventh on the fence in the running.

He held the rails for the trip and looked out of it down the straight but kicked into gear with 200m to go and burst into the lead. Special Reward was the pace setter in the race, leading the pack and looking the winner, until Sweet Deal streamed by, having to settle for second.

Asiago was actually next to Sweet Deal for the trip but was forced to go wide in order to avoid the traffic, doing a lot more work than the winner who stayed on the fence. He showed an exceptional turn of foot and probably would have won the race with even luck, but the extra work cost him.
