The Hunter Introduction

The Hunter is a recently added race on the NSW calendar to compete with the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival. While this race isn’t technically a Group 1, the amount of prizemoney available means that some of the best horses in Australia come to compete in the 1,300m race. In 2022, The Hunter will be held on Saturday 12th November at Newcastle Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2021, it was won by Lost And Running.

The Hunter, which was introduced in 2019, is a $1M handicap race held at Newcastle Racecourse in New South Wales.

Savatiano won the inaugural running of The Hunter, rounding out a four-run preparation with a pillar-to-post win. Sweet Deal came out on top in 2020, after an average preparation leading up, and won by a length over his rivals. Lost And Running won in 2021 after coming through The Everest two runs prior, where he finished 4th to Nature Strip.

The Hunter was yet another edition to The Everest carnival, as Racing NSW continues to bolster their Spring schedule. The race takes its name from the Hunter Valley, which, of course, Newcastle is a part of. The Hunter is the feature race of a stand-alone metropolitan Saturday meeting for Newcastle.

The Hunter Tips From Experts

Our tips are not out for the The Hunter in 2022 as it is too far out from the event. But the good news is that when the final field for the The Hunter is announced, we will provide guidance on each and every runner in the 2022 The Hunter.

You will find all this information below, when it becomes available. Stay tuned, or alternatively you can chat to The Shark to get the best tips for every day!

The Hunter Betting 2022

Given how new the race is, there aren’t many trends when looking at previous winners. However, when looking for The Hunter betting tips, we have found some key indicators that may help you find success.

Is Previous Form in The Hunter a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Given there have been just three runnings of the race, it is hard to get a good idea of this indicator. However, there have been seven runners that have contested at least two editions of The Hunter.

Brave Song and Redouble were non-factors in both runnings of the race while Fiesta finished 4th in 2019 and just 7th in 2020. Tactical Advantage is the best of those four runners, finishing a narrow second in 2019 and then coming fourth in 2020.

There were three horses in the 2021 edition that ran in the 2020 race – Signore Fox, Special Reward and the 2020 winner, Sweet Deal. Signore Fox came 12th in 2020 before improving to 5th in 2021, Special Reward came 2nd in 2020 but finished just 8th in 2021 while Sweet Deal wasn’t able to replicate her success, coming 10th in 2021.

While there have been some horses to compete in both races, none of them have been able to succeed and it may be best to look elsewhere.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in The Hunter?

Well, two favourites have won and one favourite finished eighth. Savatiano was priced as $4.60 favourite when winning in 2019 while Ranier started as $6 favourite in 2020, but finished 4.85 lengths off the pace.

Sweet Deal, when winning in 2020, was a slight outsider, being just sixth favourite at double digit odds, $10. Lost And Running jumped as $2.50 favourite in 2021 and ended up winning comfortably.

Formlines Heading into The Hunter

In 2019 and 2020, both winners had won a group race during their preparation. Savatiano, who was fourth up in The Hunter, won the G2 Tristarc Stakes when second up, while Sweet Deal, who was fifth up with some freshens, won the G3 Toy Show Stakes first up.

Lost And Running contested the race 5th up, failing to win in each of his four starts earlier in his preparation. However, he come out of the best form race in the country, The Everest. He finished fourth behind Nature Strip in that race, who came out and won a Group One following that while Eduardo finished 3rd in The Everest and won the Winner Stakes, where Lost And Running came 2nd.

Age

With just three years worth of data, it is hard to find trends but Savatiano and Lost And Running were five-years-old when they won, while Sweet Deal was six-years-old when she won. That shows that older horses may have the better run of it when contesting the Newcastle Racecourse feature event.

Weight

Not much in the weights for this handicap race. In 2019 and 2020, the winners were carrying 55.5kg and 56kg respectively. However, Lost And Running carried the top weight of 59kg to victory in 2021.

The Hunter Best Bets

Our tips are not out for the The Hunter in 2022 as it is too far out from the event. But the good news is that when the final field for the The Hunter is announced, we will provide guidance on each and every runner in the 2022 The Hunter.

You will find all this information below, when it becomes available. Stay tuned, or alternatively you can chat to The Shark to get the best tips for every day!

The Hunter Odds 2022

Long before The Hunter field is officially announced – online bookies will open early markets, or all-in markets, for The Hunter betting. This is prime time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on strong contenders for the 2022 running of The Hunter at double-digit odds.

Once the bookies release The Hunter odds for this year’s race, they will obviously fluctuate frequently in the lead up, especially when we have a better idea of which horses will be targeting the race and how well they have gone in the lead-up.

Punting early on these markets can find you a favourite at prices of $10 or more, which will retain you a much higher return on investment. However, there is increased risk with doing this and you should be well aware.

Depending on when you place a futures bet on The Hunter, your horse may not even run but you won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are betting when it says ‘Before Noms’, you have the security of receiving your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

The Hunter Field 2022

With $1M on the line, The Hunter field is always packed with talented sprinters that can extend themselves further than the regular 1,200m distance. The 1,300m sprint is a unique distance and not all horses are able to do it, making this race even more tantalising. The Hunter field will be formally announced at the barrier draw, which is set to take place on Wednesday, November 10th.

The Hunter Results 2022

With the race yet to be run, we still don’t know what The Hunter results for 2022 will be! However, check back in after the race and we will have all of the information on how the big race went and what the results are.

Looking back at the 2021 race, Lost And Running finished more than 1 length ahead of Wandabaa and Top Ranked, who rounded out the minor placings.

Hugh Bowman sent the favourite forward from the wide draw, sitting three wide with no cover throughout, but it clearly didn’t matter. He always looked the winner in the straight and showed an exceptional burst home to the line.

Top Ranked, the second favourite, was caught flat-footed and one-paced at the top of the straight, allowing Wandabaa to shoot past him and beating him home for second, with UK-import settling for third.
