The Silver Eagle Introduction

The Silver Eagle is a special conditions race that is run over 1,300m and is held at Randwick Racecourse. It was introduced onto the calendar in 2019, along with The Golden Eagle, to help Sydney compete with Melbourne’s Spring Carnival whilst also attempting to entice connections to keep horses racing past their three-year-old season.

In 2022, the Silver Eagle will be held on Saturday 15th October at Randwick Racecourse after the original date of the race on 8th October at Randwick was abandoned due to the poor weather in Sydney.

The 1,300m race is exclusively held for four-year-olds under set weights and penalties and holds a total prizemoney pool of $1,000,000. This year’s running of The Silver Eagle will be held on Saturday, October 8th and was won by Aim in 2021.

The Silver Eagle is a special conditions 1,300m race that was only recently added to the calendar, being run for the first time in 2019. Combined with The Golden Eagle, The Silver Eagle is one of the premier races for four-year-olds and will test if horses have the ability to progress their careers onto elite status.

Not only does the race hold a prizemoney pool of $500,000, but the top three placegetters get ballot-exemption entry into The Golden Eagle, which holds a $7.5M purse and will entice trainers to have their horses in top shape for this race, to ensure they qualify.

Held under set weights & penalties, the race brings out the best given the equality in weights. This tests jockeys and trainers to race smart tactically, whilst also seeing which four-year-olds can rise up the charts to be among the country’s best.

Given the race is still weeks away and the field is not set, we are yet to come up with our Silver Eagle tips for 2021, but be sure to read on below to get all of the information you need to know on the history and formlines for the race.

The Silver Eagle Betting 2022

When beginning to look at The Silver Eagle betting, there are a lot of important factors to consider. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Three-Year-Old Form Vital for Success in The Silver Eagle?

You definitely want your Silver Eagle betting tip to have had success as a three-year-old, with the two previous winners having won at least two races during their three-year-old season, with at least one of those being at group level.

As a three-year-old, The Inevitable won five straight races including the G3 CS Hayes Stakes. He then contested the G1 Australian Guineas two weeks later and finished 8th of 16, 7.2 lengths off the pace.

Flit won just two races as a three-year-old, but they were top level races and indicated that she had some promise. She won the G1 Thousand Guineas in her Spring campaign and then returned after a 12 week spell to win the G2 Light Fingers Stakes. She then came 6th of 11 in the G1 Surround Stakes, 1.6 lengths off the pace, and then 14th of 15 in the 2020 All Star Mile 12.6 lengths behind Regal Power.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in The Silver Eagle?

Given there have been just two runnings of the race, it has hard to definitely answer this question. The Inevitable had won seven of his nine races heading into The Silver Eagle in 2019 and started as $3 favourite because of that. On the other hand, Flit hadn’t won in her previous six starts and was priced at $10, fourth favourite, in a seven horse field.

This is no clear indication that betting on the favourite is the best path to go down, however it would be best to check with how the horse is running and their lead up to the race. Also check the conditions of the track and how it is playing on the day to be able to help find your Silver Eagle betting tips.

Formlines Heading into The Silver Eagle

Once again, given there have been just two runnings of The Silver Eagle, there is no hard-and-fast answer to this one. The Inevitable competed The Silver Eagle third up from a spell, winning a BM90, being freshened four weeks and then winning the listed Bendigo Bank Stakes by four lengths before being freshened five weeks in preparation for The Silver Eagle.

On the other hand, Flit contested The Silver Eagle fourth up, taking a harder lead up to the race against older, more experienced horses in group races. She came 2nd in the G2 Missile Stakes and 9th in the G1 Winx Stakes before a three-week freshen, then coming 10th of 16 in the G2 Sheraco Stakes, which was four weeks prior to The Silver Eagle.

The Silver Eagle Odds 2022

Long before The Silver Eagle field is officially announced – online bookies will open early markets, or all-in markets, for The Silver Eagle betting. This is prime time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on strong contenders for the 2021 running of The Silver Eagle at double-digit odds.

Once the bookies release The Silver Eagle odds for this year’s race, they will obviously fluctuate frequently in the lead up, especially when we have a better idea of which fillies will be targeting the race and how well they have returned as a three-year-old.

Punting early on these markets can find you a favourite at prices of $10 or more, which will retain you a much higher return on investment. However, there is increased risk with doing this and you should be well aware.

Depending on when you place a futures bet on The Silver Eagle, your horse may not even run but you won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are betting when it says ‘Before Noms’, you have the security of receiving your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

The Silver Eagle Results 2022

With the race yet to be run, we still don’t know what The Silver Eagle results for 2022 will be! However, check back in after the race and we will have all of the information on how the big race went and what the results are.

Looking back at the 2021 race, Aim was able to power down the straight, finishing just 0.12 lengths ahead of Ellsberg, with Count De Rupee just 0.6L behind in third place. Jumping from barrier 6, Hugh Bowman steered clear of trouble and stormed home after being 10th (of 12 runners) at the 400m mark.

Ellsberg (the favourite), from barrier 5, was always in the hunt, and was 3rd at the 400m mark, but the speed of aim proved too much for the favourite. Count De Rupee had a solid ride, and was 6th at both the 800m and 400m mark, and was able to make a run for it to the line, but ultimately was narrowly beaten by Ellsberg and Aim.
