Is Previous Inglis Millennium Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

The Inglis Millennium is a relatively new race having been commenced in 2019 but its winners have achieved good career success.

The inaugural winner Castelvecchio was a two time Group 1 winner as well as finishing runner up in the Cox Plate at 3 years of age.

Prime Star is yet to achieve top line success but has twice placed at Group 2 level along with finishing runner up in two races with one million dollars prize money.

The 2021 winner Profiteer finished runner up to multiple Group 1 winner Anamoe at his next start. He was also able to win a race on Melbourne Cup day and looks set to tackle some of the top line sprint races in the upcoming season.

After Xtravagant Star won the Inglis Millennium, she then went to the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes, where she finished 7th (of 12 runners).

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Inglis Millennium?

The Inglis Millennium has only been run three times to date. The first two winners were well into double figure odds at $21 and $18 whilst last year’s favourite saluted at $1.80. In 2022, Xtravagant Star started at $7.00, while the $3.30 favourite, Paris Dior, finished in second place.

On the pattern to date, it would indicate the favourite is somewhat of a risk which is the case with most early two year old races.

Formlines from Lead Up Races

Profiteer entered the race first up in his second preparation after a strong Flemington win over 1100m on debut.

Prime Star was yet to win a race when he won the Inglis Millennium after a defeat in a Newcastle maiden at his previous start.

Castelvecchio lined up for the race at start number two after an impressive performance in a last to first win in a Warwick Farm maiden.

Xtravagant Star won the race first up, after a 4 week freshen up. She did win a 2yo Maiden Plate in January before entering the Inglis Millennium.

It was a big field in the 2022 edition of the Inglis Millennium, with 16 runners aiming to get a major piece of the mammoth amount of prize money that was up for grabs. A lot of quality 2YOs were entered into this race, and as the pre-race odd suggested, it was a pretty open field.

There where a lot of changes in the market leading up to the big race, but in the end Paris Dior started as the $3.30 favourite, being ridden by James McDonald. Paris Dior ended up finishing in second place, 1.65L behind the winner.

Filly Xtravagant Star was too good for the other 15 runners as was able to take out the 2022 Inglis Millennium. Quality colt, Sejardan, ended up finishing in third place, picking up just under $200K in prizemoney.

Other quality horses to note in this field include; El Padrino (4th) and Boldinho (12th). It will be interested to see how these 2YOs move on from this and which races they will look to contest next.

The 2023 Inglis Millennium has yet to be run and won so let’s look back at the 2022 rendition of the race to see if it leads to any form indicators for this year’s event.

In 2022 we saw the first filly to in the race, in Xtravagant Star. She was third at both the 800m and 400m mark, and managed to find another gear to beat favourite, Paris Dior, by 1.65L.

Paris Dior was coming in hot, that’s for sure, being 10th at the 400m mark, meant there was a lot of casing down to do in the last section of the race, and she almost got there, but ended up a little bit too short.

Rounding up their minor places was quality colt, Sejardan, who was just 1.7L behind the leader. He was also making his move late in the race, and it almost paid off. Sejardan was 9th at the 800m mark, then moved up to 7th at the 400m mark.

Being a sales restricted race, it automatically narrows down the pool of horses that can line up so there is generally going to be a disparity in ability across the field however given that Inglis still have a significant market share of the yearling sales market and with the prize money on offer, the race is always going to be very appealing to any connections who have a quality early two year old.
