The Grinders Coffee Roasters Trophy is a 1400m handicap for horses aged four and five that is held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. It has a $125,000 prize pool and in 2020 will be run on Tuesday, November 3, which is Melbourne Cup Day.

The Mitchell Freedman-trained Bravo Tango won the 2019 Grinders Coffee Roasters Trophy, with East Indiaman and William Thomas finishing second and third respectively. Bravo Tango raced once more in the spring, finishing second in a BM84 at Ballarat.

Bravo Tango’s win in the Grinders Coffee Roasters Trophy was Mitchell Freedman’s only win on Melbourne Cup day, but it capped off a strong spring for the trainer. The highlight for Freedman was the Edward Manifold Stakes, which he won with Moonlight maid.

The 1400m Flemington track record stands at 1:20.60, which Lovey clocked way back in 1992. Bravo Tango won the 2019 edition of the Grinders Coffee Roasters Trophy in 1:23.78 and although it was a solid time it wasn’t close to Lovey’s record.
