The Wyong Gold Cup is a Listed 2100m handicap race held at Wyong Racecourse. It has a prize pool of $1600,000 and in 2020 will be held Friday, September 4, the same day as the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes.

The Chris Waller-trained Wu Gok won the 2019 edition of the race, beating out Hush Writer and Vaucluse Bay. The gelding ran wide around the bend but proved too strong, getting to the front and staying there. From the Wyong Gold Cup, Wu Gok went on to race in The Metropolitan but finished towards the back of the field. Hush Writer, on the other hand, would go on to win the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup before finishing mid-field in The Metropolitan.

Over recent years, Chris Waller has had great success in the Wyong Gold Cup. The star trainer has won seven of the last 10 editions of the race and no doubt will be eyeing off another victory this spring. No jockey has been able to quite replicate Waller’s recent success in the race, however, Hugh Bowman has claimed victory twice in the last five years.

In 2019, Wu Gok clocked 2:09.23 over the Wyong 2100m. Although it was a decent time, it is still not the fastest the race has seen over the last 20 years. In 2000, a 20-year-old Hugh Bowman rode Pecan Player to victory and recorded an impressive 2:08.10.
