Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes, also known as the Desirable Stakes, is a 1400m Group 3 race held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. It has a prize pool of $200,000, is for mares aged four and older and has set weights plus penalties. In 2020, it will be run on Tuesday, November 3, which is Melbourne Cup Day.
Akari won the 2019 edition of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes for the Widdup stable. Betcha Flying and Xilong finished second and third respectively, with It’s Kind Of Magic rounding out the first four. After winning the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes, Akari took no further part in the spring.
Lee Freedman had great success in the race during the 2000s, winning it three times between 2001 and 2007. The first of those victories was with Moon Dragon and it was followed by wins with Flame Of Sydney and Belcentra.
Akari ran 1:23.93 to win the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes in 2019, and although it was a solid time, the fastest in the race over the last 21 years came in 1999. Frankie Dettori rode La Zoffany to victory that year and clocked 1:22.00. The Flemington 1400m track record belongs to Lovey, who ran 1:20.60 in 1992.
