The Moonee Valley Vase is a 2040m Group 2 race for three-year-olds held at Moonee Valley Racecourse. It has a prize pool of $300,000 and is run under set weight conditions. In 2020, it will be run on Saturday, October 24, the same day as the $5 million Cox Plate.

Soul Patch proved too strong in the 2019 edition of the Moonee Valley Vase, dominating the field. Moonlight Maid finished two and a half lengths behind in second, meanwhile Serious Liason was over five lengths back in third. After claiming victory in the Moonee Valley Vase, Soul Patch ran third in the Group 1 Victoria Derby.

The race was first run as The Herald Vase back in 1983, with Centaine claiming victory. Since then, the Moonee Valley Vase has been won by some greats of the turf, including Naturalism, Efficient and Whobegotyou.

The Moonee Valley Vase is often used as a lead-up to the Victoria Derby, and a number of horses have been able to complete the double. Raveneaux did it in 1986 and less than 10 years later Blevic (1994) replicated the feat. In slightly more recent times, Helenus (2002), Plastered (2004) and Efficient (2006) have also completed the double.

No horse has ever won the race in consecutive years, however, Graeme Rogerson trained back-to-back winners in the mid-2000s. In 2005 he won with Duelled, and then in 2006 Efficient claimed victory.

In 2019, Soul Patch clocked 2:06.60 in the Moonee Valley Vase, claiming victory for the Ken Keys stable. The fastest time in the race over the last 20 years belongs to Aloisia, who managed to run 2:04.24 in 2017.
