The first Let’s Elope Stakes was run in 1987 and was won by Take My Picture. Back then it was known as the Milady Stakes, however, in 1994 it was renamed the Let’s Elope Stakes in honour of former Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup winner Let’s Elope.

Only one horse has ever won the race in consecutive years, with Commanding Jewel saluting in 2013 and 2014 for Leon Corstens.

The Let’s Elope Stakes has been a great race for those punters who have been able to find a winner, with the last five winners all recording a starting price of $6.50 or higher.

Last year’s winner, Spanish Whisper clocked an excellent time of 1:22.23 over the Flemington 1400m, and it stands as the best time in the race over the last 20 years. Despite the great time, it was still a long way behind Lovey’s course record at Flemington over 1400m, which is 1:20.60.
