The Hill Stakes is a $500,000 Group 2 weight-for-age race held at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. It is for horses aged three and older and is raced over 2000m. In 2020, the Hill Stakes will take place on Saturday, October 3, the same day as the Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan.
The Chris Waller-trained Verry Elleegant won the 2019 edition of the race, beating Samadoubt by 0.1L. Life Less Ordinary, another Chris Waller horse, finished third. From the Hill Stakes, Verry Elleegant went on to race in the Cox Plate, but struggled and finished 12th out of 14 runners.

The race has a rich history and was first run in 1921, with Beauford claiming victory. Phar Lap had consecutive victories, winning in 1930 and 1931, he went on to win the Melbourne Cup after the first of those. Other top horses to win the Hill Stakes include Beau Vite, Shannon, Emancipation and Saintly.
Verry Elleegant won the 2019 edition of the Hill Stakes in 2:05.03, however, it is not the fastest 2000m time in the race over the last 20 years. That honour belongs to Ace High, who ran an impressive 2:02.57 in 2018. That time is still a long way off the 2000m Randwick track record, which is Hampton Court’s 2:00.19.
