    Thousand Guineas Introduction

The Thousand Guineas is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in October. The race in 2021 will be held on Wednesday 13th October at Caulfield Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2020, it was won by Odeum.

The Thousand Guineas is a $1 million Group 1 race held at Caulfield Racecourse. It is run over 1600m with set weights and is for three-year-old fillies. In 2021, the race will be held on Wednesday, October 13, just a few days after the Caulfield Guineas, Toorak Handicap and Caulfield Stakes.

Sweet Chime won the first edition of the Thousand Guineas, which was back in 1946. Since then some great horses have claimed victory, including Wenona Girl, Alinghi and Miss Finland.

As with many top-class races, Hugh Bowman has had great success in the Thousand Guineas in recent times. He has won the race twice in the last six years, claiming victory on Flit and Amicus.

In 2020, Odeum won the Thousand Guineas with a time of 1:36.22, however, it wasn’t the fastest time the race has seen over the last 20 years. That honour belongs to Amphitrite, who in 2018 clocked 1:35.67.

    Thousand Guineas Betting 2021

Like many of the top Group 1’s in the Spring Racing Carnival, the Thousand Guineas has a mixed betting history and there are a lot of important factors to consider before betting at Caulfield.

Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Thousand Guineas?

Over the last five years, the Thousand Guineas has been a mixed betting race. Three of the last five winners have had starting prices inside $10, while all of them have been inside $15. The race doesn’t often have big fields, which means it can be slightly easier for punters to find a winner.

When looking at a broader period of time, favourites have fared quite well at the Thousand Guineas over the years, with seven favourites winning the race between 2006 and 2020. However, in that same period of time five winners of the Thousand Guineas started at double-figure odds, including Yosei ($11 in 2010), Commanding Jewel ($10 in 2012), Aloisia ($14 in 2017), Amphitrite ($13 in 2018) and Odeum (2020) all saluting.

Is Previous Form in the Thousand Guineas a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Like any race, the form and success of a horse entering the Thousand Guineas is important. When looking at the previous winners of the Thousand Guineas, six winners of the race  between 2012 and 2020 have finished third or better in their final lead-up event.

More specifically, six of the winners of the Thousand Guineas since 2008 have entered the meeting after a win in their last start at the Jim Moloney Stakes at Caulfield. Be sure to keep an eye on the Jim Moloney Stakes when accessing the Thousand Guineas field.

The Thousand Guineas is actually a race that is exclusive to fillies. It serves as a counterpart race to the Caulfield Guineas, which is run on the same day over the same distance, but with no restriction on gender.

More often than not, weight is an important factor that must be considered before making a bet on any race. However, the Thousand Guineas is an exception to this suggestion, as it is a set weight event.

    Thousand Guineas Odds 2021

As the Thousand Guineas is Victoria’s premier mile race for three-year-old fillies, bookies look to release odds for the race several months prior to the field being set. All horses that are likely to run in the upcoming Thousand Guineas are given odds by bookmakers so punters can participate in what is known as futures betting.

Futures betting occurs when a betting market is available before the final field is known, allowing punters to get in early on a horse that they believe will both make it into the final field and win or place in the race.

The strength of the Thousand Guineas field isn’t always as strong as the Caulfield Guineas, however, as a Group 1 with major prizemoney, there are still some great horses that go round.
