The Thousand Guineas is a $1 million Group 1 race held at Caulfield Racecourse. It is run over 1600m with set weights and is for three-year-old fillies. In 2020, the race will be held on Saturday, October 10, the same day as the Caulfield Guineas, Toorak Handicap and Caulfield Stakes.

James Cummings rode Flit to victory in 2019, with Missile Mantra and Southbank making up the placings. After winning, Flit only took part in one more race in the Spring Carnival, finishing fourth in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes.

Sweet Chime won the first edition of the Thousand Guineas, which was back in 1946. Since then some great horses have claimed victory, including Wenona Girl, Alinghi and Miss Finland.

As with many top-class races, Hugh Bowman has had great success in the Thousand Guineas in recent times. He has won the race twice in the last six years, claiming victory on Flit and Amicus.

In 2019, Flit ran 1:37.19 to win the Thousand Guineas, however, it wasn’t the fastest time the race has seen over the last 20 years. That honour belongs to Amphitrite, who in 2018 clocked 1:35.67.

Thousand Guineas Field

The strength of the Thousand Guineas field isn’t always as strong as the Caulfield Guineas, however, as a Group 1 with major prizemoney, there is still some great horses that go round. Nominations for the race close on October 5, with final acceptances on October 7.

Thousand Guineas Betting

Over the last five years, the Thousand Guineas has been a mixed betting race. Three of the last five winners have had starting prices inside $10, while all of them have been inside $15. The race doesn’t often have big fields, which means it can be slightly easier for punters to find a winner.
