The Thousand Guineas is a $1 million Group 1 race held at Caulfield Racecourse. It is run over 1600m with set weights and is for three-year-old fillies. In 2021, the race moved back to being held on the Wednesday of the Caulfield Cup Carnival, after being previously on the same day as the Caulfield Guineas.

Sweet Chime won the first edition of the Thousand Guineas, which was back in 1946. Since then some great horses have claimed victory, including Wenona Girl, Alinghi and Miss Finland.

As with many top-class races, Hugh Bowman has had great success in the Thousand Guineas in recent times. He has won the race twice in the last seven years, claiming victory on Flit and Amicus.

Thousand Guineas Betting 2022

Like many of the top Group 1’s in the Spring Racing Carnival, the Thousand Guineas has a mixed betting history and there are a lot of important factors to consider before betting at Caulfield.

Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Thousand Guineas?

Over the last six years, the Thousand Guineas has been a mixed betting race. Three of the last six winners have had starting prices inside $10, while all of them have been inside $15, except for Yearning in 2021. The race doesn’t often have big fields, which means it can be slightly easier for punters to find a winner.

When looking at a broader period of time, favourites have fared quite well at the Thousand Guineas over the years, with seven favourites winning the race between 2006 and 2021. However, in that same period of time five winners of the Thousand Guineas started at double-figure odds, including Yosei ($11 in 2010), Commanding Jewel ($10 in 2012), Aloisia ($14 in 2017), Amphitrite ($13 in 2018) and Yearning ($28 in 2021).

What is the best lead up races for the Thousand Guineas?

Like any race, the form and success of a horse entering the Thousand Guineas is important. When looking at the previous winners of the Thousand Guineas, six winners of the race  between 2012 and 2020 have finished third or better in their final lead-up event.

More specifically, six of the winners of the Thousand Guineas since 2008 have entered the meeting after competing in their last start at the Jim Moloney Stakes at Caulfield, which was true again in 2021 with Yearning. In fact, the 2021 Jim Moloney Stakes saw Yearning finish second and Elusive Express win, with those two filling the quinella again in the Thousand Guineas, with Yearning able to turn the tables.

Thousand Guineas Odds 2022

As the Thousand Guineas is Victoria’s premier mile race for three-year-old fillies, bookies look to release odds for the race several months prior to the field being set. All horses that are likely to run in the upcoming Thousand Guineas are given odds by bookmakers so punters can participate in what is known as futures betting.

Once the bookies release the 2022 Thousand Guineas odds, they will obviously fluctuate frequently in the lead up to the race, especially when we have a better idea of which horses will be targeting the race and their form leading into the race.

Punting early on these markets can find you a favourite at prices of $10 or more, which will retain you a much higher return on investment. However, there is increased risk with doing this and you should be well aware.

Depending on when you place a futures bet on the 2022 Thousand Guineas, your horse may not even run but you won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are betting when it says ‘Before Noms’, you have the security of receiving your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

The 2022 Thousand Guineas odds are out, and there are three runners as equal favourite, at $11 – Fireburn, Paris Dior and Shes Extreme. Here are the current odds, courtesy of Neds, as of mid-August:

Thousand Guineas Field 2022

When looking at a horse racing field, it is essentially just the lineup of horses that will be taking part in any given race. The strength of the Thousand Guineas field isn’t always as strong as the Caulfield Guineas, however, as a Group 1 with major prizemoney, there are still some great horses that go round.

Thousand Guineas Results 2022

With the race yet to be run, we still don’t know what the Thousand Guineas results for 2022 will be! However, check back in after the race and we will have all of the information on how the big race went and what the results are.

Looking back at last year, Yearning was able to turn the tables on Elusive Express from their Edward Manifold Stakes duel, winning by a length, with Barb Raider finishing another 1.75 lengths back in third.

Yearning was last in the running throughout the race and was able to find a back to follow into the home straight. That back was Elusive Express, with Damien Thornton allowing Jye McNeil to do all of the hard work for him. Yearning then pealed off and burst home down the stretch, winning the 2021 Thousand Guineas.
