      The Goodwood Introduction

The Goodwood is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in May. The race in 2022 will be held on Saturday 21st of May at Morphettville Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2021, it was won by Savatoxl.

Run over the sprint distance of 1200m, The Goodwood is the premier sprint race during the Adelaide Cup Carnival. First run in 1881 and won by D.O.D, The Goodwood is run under set weights and penalties conditions.

The race was originally run over a mile until 1885. Until 2006 the race was known as The Goodwood Handicap and run under the traditional handicap conditions until it was changed to its current conditions.

Hall of Fame trainer Walter Hickenbotham is the record holder with five wins in The Goodwood. One of South Australia’s favourite sons in John Letts has won five times as a jockey and is leading jockey in The Goodwood history.

Some of Australia’s leading sprinters have been successful in The Goodwood including Aurie’s Star (1940), Euclase (1992), Takeover Target (2009), Black Caviar (2012), Black Heart Bart (2016), Santa Ana Lane (2018) and Trekking (2020).

You have to go back a long way in history to find multiple winners of this race and only two horses have been successful more than once; Mostyn (1894-95) and Musket Belle (1911-12).

The Goodwood is an Australian Group 1 held at Morphettville Racecourse, it is one of the biggest races in the South Australian racing calendar. The fact that there’s $400,000 worth of prizemoney attached to it means the race attracts some of the best horses from across the country to South Australia.

It also attracts many of us Aussies who enjoy having a punt on the races. The expert racing tipsters here at The Shark will put together a list of The Goodwood tips so you can place your bets with confidence.

      The Goodwood Tips From Experts

Our tips are not out for The Goodwood in 2022 as it is too far out from the event. But the good news is that when the final field for The Goodwood is announced, we will provide guidance on each and every runner.

You will find all this information below, when it becomes available. Stay tuned!

      The Goodwood Betting 2022

There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on The Goodwood. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Previous The Goodwood Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Interestingly in the history of The Goodwood only two horses have won this race on more than one occasion. Always difficult to back up the following year under handicap conditions, but since the race has changed to set weights and penalties you may see the previous runnings becoming a much better guide than history suggests.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in The Goodwood?

Always tough to find the winner of The Goodwood as fields are usually at capacity and evenly contested. Since 2009, only three favourites have won The Goodwood and they have been champions of the turf in Takeover Target (2009), Black Caviar (2012) and Black Heart Bart (2016).

      Formlines from Lead Up Races

There are a number of local lead up races to keep an eye on leading into The Goodwood including the R.N. Irwin Stakes and D.C. McKay Stakes, while for the fillies and mares the Robert Sangster Stakes is a good guide with Black Caviar (2012) and Platelet (2013) completing the Sangster – Goodwood double in recent times.

The older sprinters have had the advantage on the younger horses of late. The last three-year-old to win The Goodwood was Lone Rock (2011).

Originally run under handicap conditions the race was a level playing field. Since the race changed conditions in 2006 the weight scale has been slanted to favouring the best horse in the race.

Fillies and mares won the race four years in a row (2010-13) but since then geldings have won all runnings.

      The Goodwood Odds 2022

Well before The Goodwood field is released – there are many bookmakers who will open up early markets, or even all-in markets, for The Goodwood betting. We believe this is the ideal time to bet on your horse, this is because you could get great odds, before they potentially shorten in the days leading up to the race.

Once the bookies release their The Goodwood odds for 2022, they will certainly fluctuate from day to day. There are a couple of things that can cause this, but when we get a better idea of the quality of horses that will be targeting The Goodwood, along with their recent form, you will see the odds change drastically.

If you do choose to place your bets in any of these early markets, it means you could find the favourite at odds of $10 or more. Which is obviously a good thing, because it means if your horse does go on to win, you will get more cash money in your back pocket! However, there is more risk if you choose this option and you need to be aware of what’s at stake.

Depending on when you place your 2022 The Goodwood futures bet, your horse may not even end up running in the race, but you also won’t get your stake back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are wishing to have a bet when it says ‘Before Noms’, then this is probably ideal, as you can rest easy knowing you will get your funds back into your account if your horse doesn’t run in The Goodwood.

The 2022 Goodwood odds are out, and In The Boat is the narrow $5.00 favourite from Extreme Warrior who is on the second line of betting at $6.50. Here are the current odds, courtesy of Neds, as of late-April:

      In The Boat$5.00
      Extreme Warrior$6.50
      The Astrologist$11
      Beau Rossa$15
      Brooklyn Hustle$17
      Instant Celebrity$17
      September Run$17

      The Goodwood Field 2022

As in recent years, The Goodwood is shaping up as an even affair with no real standout emerging to dominate the sprint scene.

It will be interesting to see where the Price/Kent stable decide to take their prize stallion prospect in Extreme Warrior as they try and chase Group 1 success before standing at stud.

The Goodwood looks the perfect option for them after he made a stunning return in the Bel Esprit. If they decide to come to Adelaide, we would expect him to be high up in the market.

Danny O’Brien could hold a key to this race with his former West Australian start in Showmanship. The son of Showcasing (GB) has won seven of his eight starts and he has a Group 1 win in him shortly and this could be the race.

In The Boat is an up and comer from the Lindsey Smith stable who just keeps measuring up to everything that is put in front of him. No reason he cannot add a Group 1 to his resume in the near future.

With The 2022 Goodwood field yet to be determined, let’s take a look back at the 2021 field, headlined by winner Savatoxl:

      The Goodwood Results 2022

Savatoxl only cost $8,000 but that did not stop him adding a Group 1 to his resume winning The Goodwood in 2021. Savatoxl had been doing most of his racing in the Northern Territory with a host of wins in Alice Springs before coming to Adelaide and winning the lead up race the D.C. McKay Stakes with something in hand but that did not stop him being sent out at juicy odds of $19 in The Goodwood.

Barend Vorster had the luxury of a perfect gate and he positioned himself in the perfect spot behind the speedy Dollar For Dollar early and travelled sweetly. He only needed to get a run from the corner and as leaders rolled out he drove through, and when balanced-up he stole a break. Hugging the rail last 200m he held off the late challenge of Instant Celebrity and favourite Gytrash filled the minor spot.

It was a triumph for the father/ son partnership of Tony and Calvin McEvoy as they took out the premier sprint in their home town of Adelaide.
