    The Goodwood Introduction

The Goodwood is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in May. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 20th of May at Morphettville Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won by Lombardo.

Run over the sprint distance of 1200m, The Goodwood is the premier sprint race during the Adelaide Cup Carnival. First run in 1881 and won by D.O.D, The Goodwood is run under set weights and penalties conditions.

The race was originally run over a mile until 1885. Until 2006 the race was known as The Goodwood Handicap and run under the traditional handicap conditions until it was changed to its current conditions.

Hall of Fame trainer Walter Hickenbotham is the record holder with five wins in The Goodwood. One of South Australia’s favourite sons in John Letts has won five times as a jockey and is leading jockey in The Goodwood history.

Some of Australia’s leading sprinters have been successful in The Goodwood including Aurie’s Star (1940), Euclase (1992), Takeover Target (2009), Black Caviar (2012), Black Heart Bart (2016), Santa Ana Lane (2018) and Trekking (2020).

You have to go back a long way in history to find multiple winners of this race and only two horses have been successful more than once; Mostyn (1894-95) and Musket Belle (1911-12).

    The Goodwood Tips From Experts

Our tips are not out for The Goodwood in 2023 as it is too far out from the event. But the good news is that when the final field for The Goodwood is announced, we will provide guidance on each and every runner.

You will find all this information below, when it becomes available. Stay tuned!

    The Goodwood Betting 2023

There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on The Goodwood. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Previous The Goodwood Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Interestingly in the history of The Goodwood only two horses have won this race on more than one occasion. Always difficult to back up the following year under handicap conditions, but since the race has changed to set weights and penalties you may see the previous runnings becoming a much better guide than history suggests.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in The Goodwood?

Always tough to find the winner of The Goodwood as fields are usually at capacity and evenly contested. Since 2009, only three favourites have won The Goodwood and they have been champions of the turf in Takeover Target (2009), Black Caviar (2012) and Black Heart Bart (2016).

    Formlines from Lead Up Races

There are a number of local lead up races to keep an eye on leading into The Goodwood including the R.N. Irwin Stakes and D.C. McKay Stakes, while for the fillies and mares the Robert Sangster Stakes is a good guide with Black Caviar (2012) and Platelet (2013) completing the Sangster – Goodwood double in recent times.

    Age

The older sprinters have had the advantage on the younger horses of late. The last three-year-old to win The Goodwood was Lone Rock (2011). In 2022, Lombardo won The Goodwood as a 5YO.

    Weight

Originally run under handicap conditions the race was a level playing field. Since the race changed conditions in 2006 the weight scale has been slanted to favouring the best horse in the race. In 2022, winner Lombardo had 55.5kg on his back.

    Gender

Fillies and mares won the race four years in a row (2010-13) but since then geldings have won all runnings, including in 2022 with Lombardo.

    The Goodwood Odds 2023

Well before The Goodwood field is released – there are many bookmakers who will open up early markets, or even all-in markets, for The Goodwood betting. We believe this is the ideal time to bet on your horse, this is because you could get great odds, before they potentially shorten in the days leading up to the race.

Once the bookies release their The Goodwood odds for 2023, they will certainly fluctuate from day to day. There are a couple of things that can cause this, but when we get a better idea of the quality of horses that will be targeting The Goodwood, along with their recent form, you will see the odds change drastically.

If you do choose to place your bets in any of these early markets, it means you could find the favourite at odds of $10 or more. Which is obviously a good thing, because it means if your horse does go on to win, you will get more cash money in your back pocket! However, there is more risk if you choose this option and you need to be aware of what’s at stake.

Depending on when you place your 2023 The Goodwood futures bet, your horse may not even end up running in the race, but you also won’t get your stake back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are wishing to have a bet when it says ‘Before Noms’, then this is probably ideal, as you can rest easy knowing you will get your funds back into your account if your horse doesn’t run in The Goodwood.

The 2023 Goodwood odds are yet to be released, please check back again soon, closer to race day.

    The Goodwood Field 2023

There was a large field of 20 runners and 1 emergency that was announced to contest The Goodwood in 2022. There were two scratchings before the race, with September Run and In The Boat, which meant the first (and only) emergency, Manhatten Times, got a run, with a field of 19 going around the Morphettville Racecourse.

It was a fairly open race in 2022, with the pre-race favourite, Extreme Warrior, starting at nice odds of $4.80. The 3Yo had just won a Listed race, and a couple of runs before that he won the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes.

In the next line of betting was Behemoth, at $7.50. The gelding hasn’t really had any performances of note recently, but he is a multiple Group 1 winner. The Astrologist was in the next line of betting, starting at $8.00. The 5Yo recently came a narrow second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap, and followed that up with a 6th in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes, just 2.35L off the pace.

    The Goodwood Results 2023

It was a fairly open affair in The Goodwood for 2022, with the favourite starting at odds of $4.80. But for those punters who back the favourite, they were not in for a payday, with Extreme Warrior finishing second last, and only beating Instant Celebrity home.

In fact it was the $16 chance, Lombardo, who got the chocolates on the day. It could not have been a better ride from jockey Zac Spain, who was certainly helped by the perfect jump from Lombardo. Lombardo was able to overcome a wide barrier, and essentially lead from start to finished. With the great jump from the barriers, it wasn’t too long before Spain was able to cut across the field and stick to the rail. It was a fairly comfortable win, winning by 1.5L.

In second place was Halvorsen, who was a $31 chance, and had to overcome the inside barrier (2) to get into the placings here in The Goodwood. The 6YO had the opposite start to the race as Lombardo, Halvorsen jumped poorly and ended up settling in second to last. The gelding was also on the rail, so it didn’t look too good for jockey Andrew Mallyon, who was going to have to fight to find the space to break free. Mallyon stuck to the rail and by the 300m mark the space did open up to navigate through.

The Astrologist finished in third place, 1.8L behind the winner. It was a good run for the 5YO, who just had enough in the tank to beat home fourth placed Frankie Pinot, who finished just 0.2L behind The Astrologist. It was a solid ride from Fred Kersley, but in the end, there just wasn’t enough speed to match Lombardo.
