The race is for horses aged three and older and is run under open handicap conditions with a total prizemoney pool of $1,000,000. The Melbourne Spring Carnival heads back to Caulfield Racecourse for the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. Sharing the day with the Group One George Main Stakes in Sydney, this race is run over 1,400m and has an interesting mix of sprinters and middle distance runners, aspiring for bigger races in the coming weeks.
The newly increased $1M prizemoney on offer is a great incentive, however the George Main Stakes, run over 1,600m, has the $500,000 prizemoney but also includes ballot-exemption entry to the Epsom Handicap, which may be more appealing for connections.

When beginning to look at Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes betting, there are a lot of important factors to consider. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:
Is Previous Form in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes a Good Indicator of Future Success?
In short, no. When looking for Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes betting tips, previous success in the race isn’t the best indicator of future success. The last horse to win multiple Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes was Testa Rossa, who won in back-to-back years in 1999-2000.
Since then, only one horse has won the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes after previously placing in the race, Turffontein in 2009. The talented chestnut finished 3rd in 2008 before going on to win the race one year later. In 2007, Bon Hoffa won the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes before running again the next year and finishing 2nd.
Since 2010, the last 11 editions of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes have seen only two horses be able to place more than once, with there being 11 different winners over this time.
Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes?
Recent form suggests that you should. Two of the last four years has seen sub-$4 favourites win the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes – Begood Toya Mother at $3.10 in 2019 and Behemoth at $3.80 in 2020. However, from 2017-2018, the two winners of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes both had double figure odds, including Santa Ana Lane who was $26. In 2022, Callsign Mav won the Group 1, with a starting price of $16.
Over the last 22 years, since 2000, the favourites have finished 1st seven times, 2nd four times and 3rd once. Given some agencies offer bonus back for 2nd and 3rd, it may be a smart play to bet on the favourite, with the likelihood of getting at least a bonus back being high.
Formlines Heading into the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
When looking back at the last five years, four of the winners have hit the race third up. Jungle Cat, in 2018, was the only outlier as the UK Raider challenged the race first up.
When looking at specific races to follow in terms of finding the best Sir Ruper Clarke Stakes tip, Santa Ana Lane (2017) and BeGood Toya Mother (2019) both challenged the Listed Regal Roller at Caulfield first up before winning the Sir Rupert two races later.
Begood Toya Mother (2019) and Behemoth (2020) both challenged the Group One Memsie Stakes second up before challenging the Sir Rupert Clarke. The 2022 winner, Callsign Mav, also contested the Memsie Stakes, where he finished 6th.
Age
Over more recent years, five-year-olds have had the most success in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, with three of the last four winners. However in the seven years prior to that, from 2010-2016, four-year-olds reigned supreme.
Just one three-year-old has won in the last 20 years, Exceed And Excel in 2003, while just two six-year-olds have won over that time, Orange County (2008) and Jungle Cat (2018). Here is a table indicating the ages of winners of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes since the 2010 edition:
Age | # of Wins |
4 | 7 |
5 | 3 |
6 | 2 |
Weight
Given the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is raced under open handicap conditions, there have been a lot of varying weights that the winners have had to carry. Over the last 12 years, since 2010, there have been eight different weights that have been carried to victory, however one sticks out the most.
Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winners have carried 52kg to victory four times, including three of the last six years, with the other seven winning weights having one winner each over that time. Behemoth, after winning the Group 1 Memsie Stakes three weeks earlier, was tasked with carrying a massive 60kg to victory, the most over the last 20 years.
Gender
It is safe to say that males have dominated the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. Over the last 20 years, since 2001, just three mares have one the race. Looking more recently, over the last 11 years, since 2011, mares haven’t won at all, with the entires (ungelded horses) and geldings sharing the last 11.
Over that 11 year span, entires have won six of the 11, with geldings winning the other five. However, looking really recently, geldings have won three straight and four of the last five.
Based on our data that we have analysed so far, your Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes best bet is to look for a four-year-old, or potentially even a gelding, carrying 52kg. Ideally they will be third up in their preparation and have challenged either the Regal Roller first up and/or the Memsie Stakes second up.

While details about the field for 2023 isn’t available yet, take a look at the key runners in the field from the race in 2022.
There were 14 runners who took their place in the 2022 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and battled it out in treacherous conditions. After a downpour midway through the meeting, the track was officially a Heavy9 when the gates crashed back for the Group 1 feature.
After a dominant win in the Listed Winter Championship Series Final, Warrnambool trained galloper, Tuvalu, was sent out race favourite at $4.00. With his usual jockey Jarrod Fry in the saddle, the pair were chasing their first Group 1 victory.
Former Perth galloper, Showmanship, was on the second line of betting after a solid second up win in the Group 3 Show County at Randwick. A winner of 8 from 10 starts and carrying legendary hoop Damien Oliver on his back, it was easy to see why he was so well respected in the market.
Bondi Stakes winner, Hilal, and Group 3 winning Kiwi, Bankers Choice, were next best in the market, despite being double figures, and both had some solid form lines leading into the race.
With the 2023 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes yet to be run and won, let’s have a look back at the 2022 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes to see if there are any key performance indicators that can help us find the winner of this year’s Group 1 feature.
Although it was an open market heading into the 2022 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, not many punters would’ve expected trans-Tasman raider, Callsign Mav, to get the chocolates.
Ridden to perfection by Jamie Mott, who bagged his maiden Group 1 victory, Callsign Mav was too good for his rivals and held off a late charge from I Am Superman, to secure his fourth Group 1 victory by 0.2L.
Ultra-consistent galloper, Tuvalu, was a further 0.2L away in third which was remarkably the first time in his 11 start career, that he had not finished in the top two.
Showmanship was the big flop in the race, who after travelling well in the middle stages, dropped the bit quickly coming to the home turn and faded out to beat only one runner home. Jockey Damien Oliver noted he wasn’t suited by the heavy conditions and he was immediately sent to the spelling paddock.
