    Rosehill Guineas Introduction

The Rosehill Guineas is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in March. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 18th of March at Rosehill Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won by Anamoe.

The Rosehill Guineas dates back to the beginning of last century when first run in 1910 and won by Electric Wire.

Last season was an historic win for up and coming trainer Annabel Neasham as Mo’unga gave her the first of what looks like going to be many Group 1 victories.

Run for the three-year-olds over the 2000m, it is the final lead-up for the Classic Australian Derby. You only have to look at the honour roll of winners to establish the quality of this race.

Phar Lap (1929), Ajax (1937), Tulloch (1957), Dulcify (1979), Kingston Town (1980), Octagonal (1996) and Tie The Knot (1998) are just a selection of champions that have won this race.

It is the middle leg of the three-year-old triple crown during the Sydney Autumn Carnival, with the Randwick Guineas the first leg and the Australian Derby the final leg. Only five horses have completed the treble Moorland (1943), Martello Towers (1959), Imagele (1973), Octagonal (1996) and It’s a Dundeel (2013).

The $600,000 Rosehill Guineas is run under set weight conditions and has been a launch pad for many Australian and international future Group 1 winners.

Is Previous Rosehill Guineas Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

The Rosehill Guineas is restricted to three-year-olds so the previous Rosehill Guineas is irrelevant to the current season.

    Rosehill Guineas Odds 2023

Well before the Rosehill Guineas field is released – many bookmakers will open early markets, or all-in markets, for Rosehill Guineas betting. Many believe that this is the best time to bet on your horse because you might be able to get really great odds on your choice.

Once the bookies release their 2023 Rosehill Guineas odds, they will tend to fluctuate each day. There are a number of things that cause this, but when we get a better idea of the type of horses that will be targeting the Rosehill Guineas, as well as their recent form, you will see the odds change dramatically.

If you do choose to place bets in these early markets, it means you could find the favourite at double digit odds or more. So, if your horse does go on to win, you will get more return on your bet! However, there is increased risk if you choose this option and you should be aware of the risks.

Depending on when you put your 2023 Rosehill Guineas futures bet on, your horse may not even get a run, but you also won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are looking to have a punt when it says ‘Before Noms’, then you can rest easy knowing you’ll receive your cash back if your horse doesn’t run in the Rosehill Guineas.

    Rosehill Guineas Field 2023

A small, but quality field was announced to contest the Rosehill Guineas in 2022. A total of nine horses were in the final field, but scratchings meant that only six horses lined up at the starting gates. This was likely due to all the rain Sydney had over the past weeks, and the track was rated a heavy 9.

The favourite going into this race was none other than Anamoe, who was odds on, at $2.00. Anamoe had just come 2nd in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas in early March, and before that he won the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes. His record for the season was very impressive before this race, at 7:3-3-1.

On the next line of betting was Converge, at $3.60, who has just beaten the favourite for this race in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas a couple of weeks prior. Like Anamoe, Converge’s previous race was also the Hobartville Stakes, where he finished in third place, behind Anamoe and Hilal.

Profondo had the next shortest odds in the field, at $5.50, who’s last run was an unimpressive 13th (out of 15) in the Group 1 Australian Guineas. After Profondo came Forgot You at $9.00, who also contested the Australian Guineas, and he managed a 4th place.

    Rosehill Guineas Results 2023

It was a very small field contesting the Rosehill Guineas, especially considering there were three scratchings, which brought the final field to just six runners.

In the end it was the favourite that got the job done for punters on what was a heavy 9 track. Anamoe, ridden by James McDonald proved too good for the other five runners, and was 2nd at both the 800m and 400m mark. He ended up finishing 6.57L in front of second place.

Converge came home in second place, but as mentioned above, it wasn’t really a close fight all the way to the line, as Anamoe was multiple lengths ahead. He just didn’t have the speed at the end of the race to put up a decent enough fight for the win.

Further back was Forgot You, who finished in 3rd, 7.3L off the leader. Profondo finished 4th, 8.63L back from Anamoe. While it was Mediaro and Sinba in 5th and 6th, respectively.
