The Metropolitan Introduction

The Metropolitan is a Group One race over 2,400m and is held at Randwick Racecourse. The race is for horses aged three or older and is run under handicap conditions with a total prizemoney pool of $750,000.

In what is one of the biggest days of racing on the entire calendar, The Metropolitan is part of Epsom Handicap day in Sydney whilst also sharing the day with the Turnbull Stakes in Melbourne. The 2,400m handicap is run for horses three or older and has a total prizemoney pool of $750,000.

It isn’t just money on the line in this one with ballot-exemption entry into the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the Autumn carnival. That is a massive bonus for connections as that race holds a $4M purse and is often raced between some of the best stayers in the world.

The Metropolitan is one of the oldest races on the calendar, being first run in 1863 and won by Regno. Since then, the likes of Sir Modred, Beau Vite, Delta, Ming Dynasty and Railings have been able to conquer The Metropolitan, with the 2021 edition being won by Montefilia.

Given the race is still weeks away and the field is not set, we are yet to come up with our Metropolitan Handicap tips for 2022, but be sure to read on below to get all of the information you need to know on the history and formlines for the race.

The Metropolitan Betting 2022

Being one of the better staying races during the Sydney Spring Carnival, The Metropolitan can be particularly tricky to judge. We have analysed some of the more important factors to consider when trying to find The Metropolitan top bets and hopefully made the picture a bit more clear for you!

Is Previous Form in The Metropolitan a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Well, just one horse has been able to win multiple editions of The Metropolitan over the last 40 years. Based on this, being a previous winner seems to hold no impact on improving your chances to be able to win the race in the future.

When looking more recently, there hasn’t been a horse that has been able to place more than once over the last 10 years. That is a pretty damning statistic and is a key indicator that previous form does not indicate future success.

While some horses may have run in the race previously and then gone on to win, they clearly haven’t done well. You may be best inclined looking for proven stayers and those that have started their Spring preparations off well.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in The Metropolitan?

Over the last 10 years, just two favourites have gone on to win The Metropolitan, Glencadam Gold at $2.80 in 2012 and Magic Hurricane at $3 in 2015. Outside of those two horses, just two other winners had single digit odds, indicating that roughies may be the best way to go in this race.

That means that six of the last 10 winners have had double digit odds, including one at $16 and one at $21. Montefilia, last year’s winner, jumped at $8.

Formlines Heading into The Metropolitan

While there is no clear main lead-up race for The Metropolitan, three of the last five winners contested the Group Three Kingston Town Stakes, which is typically three weeks prior to The Metropolitan.

Mirage Dancer was one of the two that didn’t participate in the Kingston Town Stakes in the lead-up. He contested The Metropolitan third up, finishing 7th in the listed Heatherlie Stakes, being freshened for four weeks and then coming fourth in the Group Three JRA Cup before going on to win his first and only Group One race.

Looking at the last five winners, three of them contested the race third up and just one of them actually won in that preparation, prior to the race. That was Come Play With Me, who is a bit of an outlier after contesting the Perth Winter Carnival and never being spelled or let up before the Spring Carnival.

After his last race in Perth, which he won at listed level, the gelding changed trainers but was just freshened for five weeks during this time, before having two runs prior to The Metropolitan.

While it isn’t a formline race, something of note is that two of the last five winners changed trainers before the Spring preparation in which they won The Metropolitan, which could be something a bit left-of-field to look for.

Age

The Metropolitan has historically been won by older horses, with just one horse aged under five winning since 2000. However over the last 10 years, there has been no particular trend in terms of age.

Across horses aged five, six, seven and eight, it has been quite an even spread of winners. The former two have had three wins each while the latter two have had two wins each. In saying that, over the last five years all four of the seven- and eight-year-old winners have taken place.

Here is a table indicating the ages of winners of The Metropolitan since the 2011 edition:

Age# of Wins
53
63
72
82

Weight

Given the Handicap conditions of The Metropolitan, there have been plenty of varying weights to win the race over the years. Horses carrying 55.5kg have won on three occasions while horses carrying 54kg have won twice, over the last 10 years.

However, the weights of winners have been very varied, ranging from 50.5kg to 56kg in the last 10 years. While 55.5kg seems to be the clear leader, this is quite a dispersed statistic and can’t be followed too closely.

Gender

Since 2000, just one mare has won the race, with The Metropolitan being dominated by males over recent years. Over the last 10 years, geldings have been the way to go, winning eight of those races. The other two years saw a six-year-old entire and seven-year-old entire come out on top, however, if you are looking for a horse to follow then it is likely best to look for a gelding.

Based on our data that we have analysed so far, your The Metropolitan best bet is to look for a gelding aged five or older. They will have hopefully contested the Group Three Kingston Town Stakes prior to the run, however, success in the lead-up and also in the race previously is not vital.

The Metropolitan Odds 2022

Long before The Metropolitan field is officially announced – online bookies will open early markets, or all-in markets, for The Metropolitan betting. This is prime time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on strong contenders for the race at double-digit odds.

Given they have already been released, The Metropolitan odds for 2022 will obviously fluctuate frequently in the lead up to the race, especially when we have a better idea of which horses will be targeting the race and their form leading into the race.

Punting early on these markets can find you a favourite at prices of $10 or more, which will retain you a much higher return on investment. However, there is increased risk with doing this and you should be well aware.

Depending on when you place your 2021 The Metropolitan futures bet, your horse may not even run but you won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are betting when it says ‘Before Noms’, you have the security of receiving your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

The Metropolitan Field 2022

Due to its Group One status and the fact it is relatively early in the spring, The Metropolitan often has a very strong field. As mentioned, it is regularly used as a lead-up race to the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate, some hopefuls for that race can also be found in The Metropolitan.

The Metropolitan Results 2022

With the race yet to be run, we still don’t know what The Metropolitan results for 2022 will be! However, check back in after the race and we will have all of the information on how the big race went and what the results are.

Looking back at the 2021 results, it was an absolutely enormous effort from Montefilia, with many pundits questioning her ability to stay the distance before the race.

She certainly answered her critics with this performance, unable to slot into the running line and working three wide the trip for the entire race, and also copping a bump around the turn at the 450 mark.

She put in a huge effort when she was entitled to stop, finding again after being challenged by a number of runners in the straight, and getting the bob in against Entente right at the line to snare an exciting victory.
