The Kennedy Cantala Stakes is a 1600m Group 1 race held at the home of racing in Australia, Flemington Racecourse. It is run as a quality handicap and has a total prize pool of $2 million. In 2021, it will be run on Saturday, October 30, which is Derby day.
Courtenay won the first edition of the Kennedy Cantala Stakes, which was way back in 1881. Back then, it was named the Coburg Stakes and was run over 1,800m. A number of top horses have since crossed the line first in the Kennedy Cantala Stakes, including Prince Cortauld, Better Loosen Up and Divine Madonna.

Looking back at last year, Chris Waller’s Yulong Prince started well back in the field and held its position until the straight. Buffalo Rivers hit the final turn with a two length lead before Yulong Prince and Cascadian made their runs with 200 metres left in the race.
The two horses took an outside position and passed the rest of the field with ease, however Yulong Prince passed the post first, edging out Cascadian by just 0.2 lengths. Rock rounded out the podium with a third placed finish, 0.7 lengths behind Yulong Prince. The victory was Chris Waller’s second Group 1 winner of the 2020 Derby Day meeting.
