    Doomben 10000 Introduction

The Doomben 10000 is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in May. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 13th of May at Doomben Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won by Mazu.

Run under weight-for-age conditions over the 1200m at Doomben, this race is the premium sprint race in Queensland and the richest held at Doomben throughout the season.

First run in 1933, the Doomben 10000 was won by Wallun. The race was run over the famous 1350m until 2017 when the Brisbane Carnival was revamped and the race was reduced to 1200m.

Over the years there has been a long list of Australia’s finest sprinters who have taken the crown in the Doomben 10000 including Bernborough (1946), Aquanita (1961), Baguette (1971), Chief De Beers (1995/98), Takeover Target (2007), Apache Cat (2008/09) and Redzel (2017).

The Hall of Fame combination of trainer and rider Tommy Smith and George Moore hold the records for the most number of winners for the Doomben 10000.

Tommy Smith has trained six winners while George Moore leads the riders with five wins in Queensland’s greatest sprint race.

The race in 2022 was held at Eagle Farm, due to the poor weather and the fact that Eagle Farm has been drainage systems in place.

    Doomben 10000 Betting 2023

There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on the Doomben 10000. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Previous Doomben 10000 Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

There have been five multiple winners of the Doomben 10000, the most recent being Apache Cat (2008/09).

Now that the Doomben 10000 has changed conditions to weight-for-age, we would expect there to be more multiple winners and previous years runnings will become a factor to picking next season’s winner.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Doomben 10000?

Surprisingly favourites have had some success in recent years with six favourites winning in the last 13 years and all have been nice each way odds, the most recent favourite was Mazu (2022), who won at odds of $3.10. Big fields usually offer good value but history suggests to always respect the favourite.

    Formlines from Lead Up Races

Since the race conditions changed in 2017 the logical lead up race has been the BTC Cup (1200m). Six of the last 11 winners of the Doomben 10000 have come through the BTC Cup.

    Age

Sea Siren (2013) was the first and last three-year-old filly to win the Doomben 10000, while Mazu (2022) won the race as a three-year-old (gelding). Since the race has been run under weight-for-age conditions, the older more experienced sprinters have had the advantage.

    Weight

Now the Doomben 10000 is run under weight-for-age conditions, it gives all runners an equal footing based on age.

    Gender

Since 2017 when conditions were changed to weight-for-age, only English (2018) has won for the mares.

    Doomben 10000 Odds 2023

Well before the Doomben 10000 field is released – there are many bookies who will open up early markets, or all-in markets, for all your Doomben 10000 betting needs. We believe this is the ideal time to bet on the horse you’ve chosen, this is because you could get great odds before they potentially shorten in the days leading up to the race.

Once the bookies release their Doomben 10000 odds for 2023, they are likely to fluctuate day to day. There are a couple of things that cause this, but when we get a better idea of the quality of horses that will be aiming for the Doomben 10000, along with their recent form, you will see the odds change.

If you do choose to place your bets in any of these early markets, it means you could find the favourite at odds at double digits. Which is obviously something we are all looking to do, because it means if your horse does win, you will get more cash money in your account! However, there is increased risk if you choose to go down this path and you need to be aware of what could happen.

Depending on when you place your 2023 Doomben 10000 futures bet, your horse may not even end up getting a run in the race, but you also won’t get your funds back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the date of the Doomben 10000. If you are wishing to have a bet when it says ‘Before Noms’, then this is the best time as you can know you will get your stake back into your bookie account if your horse doesn’t run.

The 2023 Doomben 10000 odds are yet to be released. Be sure to check back here soon, as we will provide the odds below when they are released.

    Doomben 10000 Field 2023

A field of 15 runners were announced to contest the 2022 Doomben 10000, but with the scratching of Shelby Sixtysix, this too the final field down to 14. The favourite heading into this Group 1 was Mazu.

The 3YO had a great trial recently, and had won the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint. In fact, he had won the last five races in a row, before taking on the Doomben 10000, this is certainly a step up however, as this will be his first attempt at Group 1 level.

On the next line of betting is Kementari, at $7.00. The 7YO had just come off a win in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes. He has won one Group 1, and three second places, also with two third places. After Kementari was Count De Rupee, priced at $9.00. Count De Rupee just put in a clinical performance in the Group 2 Victory Stakes, but is yet to place (or win) at Group 1 level.

Wrapping up the runners that started at $10 or under was Entriviere, at $10 exactly. Coming from across the ditch, it is difficult to line up the form guides, but she did finish second in the Group 1 BCD Group Sprint and also won the Group 1 Sistema Railway a couple of runs earlier.

    Doomben 10000 Results 2023

Another year, another favourite winning! But still, the $3.10 punters were getting for Mazu was nothing to turn your nose up at. Mazu got a reasonably good start, and settled in the middle of the pack, therefore needed to wait for some space to open up before he could make his run.

Zoustyle out the front set a fast pace, which in the end worked well into Mazu’s hands. Mazu had the cover he needed, while also having space to his left in order to make a clean break and completely storm home. There was a lot of competition from Paulele and Entriviere, but by the 100m mark, he was in the lead, and just held off Paulele for the top spot, but just 0.1L.

Paulele had a great start and ended up settling in close to Mazu. Jockey James McDonald was paitent, waiting until the right moment to unleash the full speed of Paulele. By the 300m mark, he was swallowing up all the field, except Mazu, of course, but just couldn’t get it done, with Mazu just getting the bob, an extra 50m, and it could have been a completely different story!

In third place was Entriviere, who ended up finishing just 0.6L behind the leader. Entriviere came from literally nowhere to finish third, she was second last at the 300m mark, and the speed is something that needs to be seen to be believed. It took just 100m to catch up to the front runners and it was looking like the most unlikely win, but in the end, jockey Opie Bosson left the run just a tad too late.
