The Chipping Norton Stakes is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in February. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 25th of February at Randwick Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won once again by Verry Elleegant.

Many thought that would be a hard feat to match but that was before Winx. She made this race her own, beginning her Autumn campaign with destructive wins from 2016 to 2019.

The track was listed as a Heavy 10, and we saw three horses scratched from the race, Kolding, Maximal and Hungry Heart. Then we were down to 10, and of those 10 runners three started at odds under $10.

Verry Elleegant was the favourite leading up to this race, and she showed why by winning it again in 2022, after beating the rest of the field in the 2021 edition of the race.

Colette was in the second line of betting, at $3.60, and she had just come from the Apollo Stakes, were she finished 2nd. It was expected that Colette would thrive on the heavy track, as he record before this race was 3:3-0-0. But in this race, she finished down in 8th.

The final runner under double digit odds was Think It Over. His odds of $4.80 was justified considering he had just won the Apollo Stakes. But the area of concern was his record on heavy tracks, which stood at 3:0-0-0, before this race.

The mighty mare was back at it again! For the second year in a row Verry Elleegant was sent out as the favourite, and she didn’t let punters down in the 2022 edition of the race either, winning by 0.14L.

Verry Elleegant’s success on heavy tracks certainly came into place in the 2022 edition of the Chipping Norton Stakes, as the rain was intense in the week leading up to the race, as well as on the actual day of the race. She now has a heavy track record of 4:3-1-0.

Long shot, She’s Ideel, at odds of $71, was just pipped by the favourite, and ended up finishing in second place. While another longshot, Angel Of Truth, wrapped up in the minor placings.

Colette, who was on the second line of betting, was disappointing in this race, finishing down in 8th, 2.75L off the pace. Starting from barrier 2, Colette was 3rd at the 800m mark, but as we got closer to the finish line, it was evident there was nothing left in the tank.
