The Chipping Norton Stakes is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in February. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 25th of February at Randwick Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won once again by Verry Elleegant.
One of the early weight-for-age races of the carnival but what an honour roll it possesses. Phar Lap (1930), Bernborough (1946), Tulloch (1958 & 1960), Winx (2016-2019).
The distance was reduced back to the mile in 1980 and promoted to Group 1 level in 1986. The race is named after the Sydney suburb of Chipping Norton and was first run in 1925 when Wallace Mortlake crossed the line first.
Lough Neagh became the first multiple winner of the race winning in 1933 then returned in 1936 and won, before making it three wins in 1937.
Hard to forget the dominance of the weight-for-age scene in the early start of the century by Tie the Knot. He won this race four years in a row from 1999 to 2002. Many thought that would be a hard feat to match but that was before Winx. She made this race her own, beginning her Autumn campaign with destructive wins from 2016 to 2019.
The Chipping Norton Stakes is an Australian Group 1 held at Randwick Racecourse, it is one of the first major races in the calendar year and the $600,000 prizemoney attached to it means the race brings some of the biggest horses from across the country to Sydney, whilst also attracting many Aussies, just like us, who enjoy having a punt. There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on the Chipping Norton Stakes. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:
Is Previous Chipping Norton Stakes Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?
Definitely look at the previous seasons Chipping Norton Stakes for an indicator to this year’s winner. The weight-for-age champions will keep coming back season after season and under the weight-for-age scale the cream will usually come to the top. Many multiple winners of this race suggest that last season’s running is a good guide. In 2022, Verry Elleegant won the Chipping Norton Stakes, after winning the race in 2021.
Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Chipping Norton Stakes?
Yes. Weight-for-age racing is the proven class for champions. Winx was favourite winning all her four Chipping Norton Stakes. Very Elleegant was sent out a $2.50 favourite in this race. She was the favourite in both the 2021 and 2022 editions of the race.
Formlines from Lead Up Races
Usually a starting point for many coming off a Spring campaign but those with the advantage of race fitness may have stepped out in the Apollo Stakes over the 1400m before coming into this. Most of the chances in this year’s Chipping Norton have had that one run under their girths and that is the best guide to this.
Three-year-olds do not have the best of records in recent times. The last to win was He’s No Pie Eater and that was back in 2007 while the last three-year-old filly to salute was Heat Of The Moment and that was way back in 1986.
The older, more experienced geldings and mares have been winning of late and would be the most successful winners of recent years, which we saw once again in 2022, when 6YO Verry Elleegant won the race.
Weight-for-age is the great leveller and usually allows the best horse in the race to have the advantage. If there is an exceptional three-year-old, they can have a weight advantage but it is always difficult for them to beat the older horses as history tells us.
The mares have been dominating in recent times, but we are talking about freaks in Winx and Verry Elleegant. History shows that it is difficult for a colt or filly to win the Chipping Norton.

Well before the official Chipping Norton Stakes field is announced – some of the major online bookmakers will open early markets, or all-in markets, for your Chipping Norton Stakes betting. This is the best time to bet on the horse you like, as you might be able to bet on strong runners for the 2023 Chipping Norton Stakes at juicy odds.
Once the bookies release the 2023 Chipping Norton Stakes odds, they will tend to fluctuate frequently in the lead up to the race. This is especially the case when we have a better idea of the type of horses that will be targeting the race, along their form leading into the big race.
Betting early on these markets means you could find the favourite at a price of $10 or more, which means if the horse you bet on does go on to win, you will get a much higher return! However, there is increased risk with engaging in this type of betting, and you should be aware of the risks.
Depending on when you put your 2023 Chipping Norton Stakes futures bet on, your horse may not even run in the race, but you won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the race day. If you are placing your bets when it says ‘Before Noms’, then you have the security of getting your money back if your horse doesn’t run.
The 2023 Chipping Norton Stakes odds are out, and Anamoe is currently the favourite ahead of Zaaki who is on the second line of betting. Here are the current odds, courtesy of Neds, as of early-February:
|Think It Over||$13|
A field of 13 was announced to contest the 2022 Chipping Norton Stakes, but as the rain kept bucketing down in Sydney in the week leading up to the race, and especially on the Saturday, many trainers decided to pull their horse from the race.
The track was listed as a Heavy 10, and we saw three horses scratched from the race, Kolding, Maximal and Hungry Heart. Then we were down to 10, and of those 10 runners three started at odds under $10.
Verry Elleegant was the favourite leading up to this race, and she showed why by winning it again in 2022, after beating the rest of the field in the 2021 edition of the race.
Colette was in the second line of betting, at $3.60, and she had just come from the Apollo Stakes, were she finished 2nd. It was expected that Colette would thrive on the heavy track, as he record before this race was 3:3-0-0. But in this race, she finished down in 8th.
The final runner under double digit odds was Think It Over. His odds of $4.80 was justified considering he had just won the Apollo Stakes. But the area of concern was his record on heavy tracks, which stood at 3:0-0-0, before this race.
The mighty mare was back at it again! For the second year in a row Verry Elleegant was sent out as the favourite, and she didn’t let punters down in the 2022 edition of the race either, winning by 0.14L.
Verry Elleegant’s success on heavy tracks certainly came into place in the 2022 edition of the Chipping Norton Stakes, as the rain was intense in the week leading up to the race, as well as on the actual day of the race. She now has a heavy track record of 4:3-1-0.
Long shot, She’s Ideel, at odds of $71, was just pipped by the favourite, and ended up finishing in second place. While another longshot, Angel Of Truth, wrapped up in the minor placings.
Colette, who was on the second line of betting, was disappointing in this race, finishing down in 8th, 2.75L off the pace. Starting from barrier 2, Colette was 3rd at the 800m mark, but as we got closer to the finish line, it was evident there was nothing left in the tank.
