The Caulfield Stakes is a 2,000m Group 1 weight-for-age race held at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. It has a massive prize pool of $1 million and often includes horses who go on to race in the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate. In 2022, the race will be run on Saturday, October 8, which is the same day as Caulfield Guineas, Thousand Guineas and Toorak Handicap.
Isonomy won the first edition of the Caulfield Stakes, which was way back in 1886. Since then, some great horses have won the race, including Wakeful, Eurythmic, Rising Fast, Kingstown Town, Might And Power and Winx.
The Hayes, Hayes and Dabernig stable has had solid success in the race in recent times, winning the Caulfield Stakes twice in the last five years. They trained Cape Of Good Hope in 2019 and Criterion in 2015. Jockey Mark Zahra has also been successful, winning twice in the last three years.
In 2020, Arcadia Queen recorded a time of 2:03.38 to win the race but it wasn’t the fastest Caulfield Stakes that we’ve seen over the last 20 years. That came in 2002 when Lonhro won the first of his two Caulfield Stakes. He clocked 2:00.60 in an impressive win over Sunlight.

Like many of the top Group 1’s in the Spring Racing Carnival, the Caulfield Stakes has a mixed betting history and there are a lot of important factors to consider before placing your bet at Caulfield.
Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:
Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Caulfield Stakes?
The Caulfield Stakes has been a decent race for punters, with four of the last five winners having a starting price inside $10. Obviously the betting history is somewhat skewed, as Winx won the 2016 edition of the race against only two other runners at a starting price of $1.24. Between 2009 and 2020, five favourites have won the Caulfield Stakes with Winx being the most recent favoured winner in 2016.
Is Previous Form in the Caulfield Stakes a Good Indicator of Future Success?
Like any race, the form and success of a horse entering the Caulfield Stakes is important. When looking at the field for the Caulfield Stakes, many of the horses that participate have often competed in either the Memsie Stakes (1400 metres), Makybe Diva Stakes (1600 metres), Underwood Stakes (1800 metres) and Turnbull Stakes (2000 metres) in the lead-up.
The Underwood Stakes is the most successful lead-up race for the Caulfield Stakes, producing eight winners between 2006 and 2020. Since 2009, six Caulfield Stakes winners have finished either first or second in their lead-up race.
Gender
A good way of filtering through your Caulfield Stakes top bets every year is to start by ruling out almost all of the mares in the field, unless they are proven competitors in WFA Group 1 races. In 2016, Winx became just the second mare since 1985 to win the Caulfield Stakes. So, we recommend keeping an eye on the male gallopers that are running in this event.
Weight
More often than not, weight is an important factor that must be considered before making a bet on any race. The Caulfield Stakes is a weight for age (WFA) event, which essentially means that all horses will carry a set weight in accordance with the WFA scale. The weight allocated varies depending on the horse’s age, its sex, the race distance and the month of the racing season.
Age
Age is also another distinctive factor in determining a winner of any open handicap race and the Caulfield Stakes is no different. This race has been dominated by four and five year old horses, with only two horses outside that age bracket winning the race since 2009.

As the Caulfield Stakes is the Melbourne Racing Club’s premier weight-for-age event for three-year-olds and upwards at the 2000-metres, bookies look to release odds for the race several months prior to the field being set.
All horses that are likely to run in the upcoming Caulfield Stakes are given odds by bookmakers so punters can participate in what is known as futures betting. Futures betting occurs when a betting market is available before the final field is known, allowing punters to get in early on a horse that they believe will both make it into the final field and win or place in the race.

When looking at a horse racing field, it is essentially just the lineup of horses that will be taking part in any given race. As a $1 million Group 1 race, the field in the Caulfield Stakes is often very strong. The fact that it is used as a launching pad to other major Group 1s also furthers this point. In 2021, the final field and barriers for the Caulfield Stakes are announced the Wednesday of race week.
With the race yet to be run, we still don’t know what the Caulfield Stakes results for 2022 will be! However, check back in after the race and we will have all of the information on how the big race went and what the results are.
Looking back at last year, Zaaki was rolled at the short price in a surprise result to many! No Effort and Homesman set a muddling pace, with the short priced favourite unsuited by a lack of genuine tempo.
With the race devolving into a ‘sit and sprint’ favouring gallopers with a superior turn of foot, Probabeel and Nonconformist fought out the finish.
A number of factors could have contributed to Zaaki’s demise; the Melbourne way of going, possible soreness exacerbated by the Good 3 track, and the race shape.
