Black Caviar Lightning Stakes 2021

The 2021 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes is a 1,000m spring, weight-for-age, Group 1 event. It will be held at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday 13 February.

The 2020 Black Caviar Lightning winner was Gytrash, who surprised many a punter – defeating some big names, such as Redzel land loving Gaby. Favourite, Nature Strip, came in at fourth.

The Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Previously just known as the Lightning Stakes) brings in the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival – as the first Group One sprint race of the year.

The race attracts punters, and sprinters, from all over – showcasing some of the best Aussie horses the country has seen.

Lightning Stakes Tips

2021 Black Caviar Lightning Field

While the 2021 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Field has not yet been released, you can expect it to contain some of the most notable speedsters in the country.

Given its short distance, the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes is the ultimate high-speed test from start to finish.

Contrary to other Group 1 Sprint Events seen throughout the Aussie Calendar – the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes attracts a surprising smaller field, which is most likely due to the weight-for-age conditions.
It is common to see a most of the field first up, with 90% of the winners over the past 20 years first-up from a spell. Those who aren’t will most likely rise up from the Group 2 Australia Stakes, or the listed Adams Stakes.

Interstate trainers will usually pinpoint this race with their best sprinters, and it isn’t uncommon for mature three-year-olds to contest the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, which adds an extra element to the meet.

2021 Black Caviar Lightning Best Bets

The autumn is truly upon as we’re starting to see the absolute cream of the crop returning, with some bona fide A graders lining up against each other in the 2021 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m).

Let’s take a look at each and every runner in the 2021 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) to pick a winner and some value…

1 – Nature Strip – $4.20 🏆💰

Is there a more polarising horse in racing? At his scintillating best he is simply unbeatable, but we haven’t seen that for quite a while, since his 2020 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) win.

The 1000m is a plus and so is the booking of Jamie Kah, but he hasn’t won first up in his last four preparations. The price is fair for a horse of his caliber, so if you’re a fan, I wouldn’t talk you out of backing him.

2 – Bivouac – $2.90 🏆💰

The other absolute star in the field, who is similarly untouchable at his best, as evidenced when he dropped Nature Strip in the 2020 VRC Sprint Classic down the Flemington straight. The query here is the 1000m, though it may be somewhat offset by the fact that Nature Strip isn’t usually at his best first up.

3 – Elite Street – $14 💰

Caused a massive upset to win the Group 1 Winterbottom at long odds during the Ascot Carnival, and is a progressive type who could surprise here. Is targeting the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) but has good 1000m form, and a run at his best could see him place, or shock again if Nature Strip and Bivouac are below their best.

4 – Halvorsen – $67

Does reasonably well at Flemington and can mix it over the 1000m, but is severely outclassed here, and hasn’t got near it previously at Group 1 level.

5 – Pippie – $9.50 💰

Will provide a fair bit of nuisance value up in front for the lead with Nature Strip, and always goes well at the 1000m distance. Has the ability to win Group 1 sprints, but she’s going up against two absolute top liners, and the jury is still out on her ability down the Flemington straight.

6 – Fabergino – $9.00

Ticks a few boxes, is a specialist at Flemington and is 9 from 13 over the 1000m trip. but has looked out of her depth during her two previous Group 1 attempts. Tough to see her sticking on to some of the big names here.

7 – September Run – $6.00

Put together an outstanding spring campaign, capped off with a huge win down the Flemington straight in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) where she took on the boys and won. Think she’s the weak spot in the market here however, as she now has to step up to weight-for-age level for the first time.

8 – Swats That – $16

Similar to September Run, put together a fantastic spring as a three-year-old but is now thrown into the weight-for-age deep end. Price is about right.
