Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Introduction

The Black Caviar Lightning Stakes is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in February. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 18th of February at Flemington Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won by Home Affairs.

Formerly known as just the Lightning Stakes, it was renamed in 2013 in honour of arguably our greatest sprinter in Black Caviar who took out the race that year for the third consecutive time.

The race forms the first leg of the Melbourne Autumn sprint triple crown with the Oakleigh Plate being run a week later at Caulfield over the 1100m and the Newmarket Handicap being run back at Flemington, this time over the 1200m, a fortnight later.

Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Betting 2023

There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Previous Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Five horses have completed the back to back double in the feature, Wenona Girl, Maybe Mahal, River Racer, Schillaci, and of course the race’s namesake, Black Caviar who completed the treble. Interestingly, Mahogany also won the race twice but a year apart, his first as an Autumn four year old after taking out both the VRC Derby and the AJC Derby at 3.

In 2022, Nature Strip, who won the race in 2021, was the $2.20 favourite. Unfortunately, he was unable to win back-to-back races, but did come second by just 0.1L to Home Affairs.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes?

Favourites do have an excellent record in this race, which is fairly typical for a weight for age sprint worth rich prize money as it will inevitably attract the dominant short courser of his or her generation.

Of the last 13 runnings of the Black Caviar Lightning, winners have been as short as $1.10, that being Black Caviar who won her three races with SP’s of $1.10, $1.10, $1.28, and the roughest in this period being the highly capable sprinter Gytrash at remarkable odds of $21.

If we take Black Caviar’s three short quote wins out of the equation, the average winning price of the remaining ten runnings of the Lightning Stakes is $8.92 which suggests that even though favourites have a strong record, the race is certainly open to the occasional anomaly of a high priced winner.

Formlines from Lead Up Races

Being a 1000m sprint, the recent winners have almost exclusively tackled this race first up all coming of a variety of Spring campaigns.

The one common thread is the vast majority have tasted success at sprint trips at Group 2 level or higher in the 12 month period leading into the race. Home Affairs, the 2022 winner, contested this race first up, after a 16 week spell, where he won the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Age

The race is very typically won by horses five and older at the peak of their Weight for Age careers and before the 2022 edition, where 3YO Home Affairs won the race, had not been won by a 3YO since 2005 when Fastnet Rock fell just short of taking out the sprint triple crown by going down to Alinghi in the Newmarket Handicap.

Weight

The race is run under weight for age conditions and has been won mostly by older horses in recent years who are allotted the maximum weight for their sex under the race conditions. However, the 2022 edition saw 3YO Home Affairs win, and was carrying just 55.5kg.

Gender

Even with Black Caviar’s dominance, females have won less than fifty percent of the last twenty runnings with five mares winning the race a total of eight times.

Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Odds 2023

Well before the official Black Caviar Lightning Stakes field is announced – many online bookmakers will open early markets, or all-in markets, for all your Black Caviar Lightning Stakes betting needs. This is known as the best time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on strong runners for the 2023 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at tasty odds.

Once the bookies release the 2023 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes odds, they will tend to fluctuate pretty much day-by-day in the lead up to the race. When we have a better idea of the group of horses that will be targeting the race, this is where you will see the greatest amount of fluctuation, and quite often you will find different bookies are offering up different odds, so it certainly pays to look around.

Betting early on these markets means you could find the favourite at a price of $10 or more, which means if your chosen horse does go on to win, you will get a much higher return! However, you must be aware that there is an increased risk with doing this.

Depending on when you put your 2023 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes futures bet on, your horse may not even run but you also won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date of the race. If you are betting when it says ‘Before Noms’, then you have the security of receiving your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Field 2023

Whilst the final field for the 2023 Black Caviar Lightning is yet to be finalised, with the current array of sprinting stars within the Australasian turf ranks, it is fair to say we can expect a strong field as has long been the tradition.

Conqueror of The Everest, Nature Strip lined up as the favourite, and looked good when comfortably winning a recent trial. He was the deserved favourite, and whilst he appears to overcome some of the issues that have plagued him with inconsistency in the past, he still does have a couple of chinks in his his armour.

Other horses in the small field of note would be Eduardo, who was there ready to pounce. He is another horse who, like Nature Strip, has become a much more complete package as he has matured.

They are the two benchmark sprinters out of the past couple of seasons and deserve their rightful place at the top of the Black Caviar Lightning betting.

But at the end of the day, it was Home Affairs that proved too good for the rest of the runners, just pipping Nature Strip at the post, winning by 0.1L.

Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Results 2023

With the 2023 rendition of the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes yet to be run and won, let’s have a look back at the 2022 running of the race, which was taken out by Home Affairs.

After the 2021 race was won by Nature Strip, he came into the 2022 edition of the race as the clear favourite, despite the small field. Looking at his previous form and trials, there were many reasons to support this favouritism.

However, things didn’t really turn out as planned, as the sprint race was won by 3YO, Home Affairs, by just 0.1L to the favourite. Nature Strip was bolting home, but in the end, just had too much ground to make up, and was 7th (out of a field of 9) at the 800m mark.

Whereas, Home Affairs got into the front early in the race, and was able to stay in front from those making a late charge. Rounding up the minor placings was Eduardo, who finished 1.6L behind Home Affairs.
