    Australian Derby Introduction

The Australian Derby is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in late March / early April. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 2nd of April at Randwick Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won by Hitotsu.

The Australian Derby is one of the time honoured races of the Australian turf which has been won by some of the all time greats in its 161 year history. Phar Lap and Kingston Town undoubtedly head that list whilst the race record holder, Octagonal won what is arguably the greatest rendition of the race when he narrowly defeated future Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup winner Saintly, with dual Group 1 winner Filante a length away in third.

The race has been run exclusively at Royal Randwick and always over the mile and a half, or 2400m distance however the race was originally a Spring 3YO event until 1978 when the race was not held and shifted to the Autumn of 1979 where it has stayed ever since.

Given the large prize pool plus the fact that being run in the Autumn sees more seasoned and genuine top line 3YO’s target the race, it is generally regarded as the premier race of all the nation’s 3YO classics.

    Australian Derby Betting 2023

There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on the Australian Derby. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Previous Australian Derby Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

Like many three year old races run over a staying trip, many of the winners find it hard to regain Group 1 level form when they mature and this has been particularly evident in recent years as Australian breeding trends towards targeting richer sprint races for juveniles. That said, there is rarely a decade that goes by without a genuine start coming out of the race.

In the 2010’s it was It’s a Dundeel who would retire to a successful stud career as a six time G1 winner. In the 2000’s the race threw both Shoot Out who bagged five Group 1’s in his career including back to back Chipping Norton Stakes.

And Eremein who after bagging the Australian Derby and Rosehill Guineas double in his 3YO season of 2005, he would go on to clean sweep the Sydney WFA staying events the following Autumn, the Ranvet Stakes, the Tancred Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

The star winner of the 90’s was certainly the great Octagonal and the list goes on almost without fault throughout the race’s history.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Australian Derby?

Between 1991 and 2022 just seven favourites have saluted and the recent trend has been more toward double figure priced winners. However, in the 2022 edition it was the $3.70 favourite, Hitotsu, that won the race.

    Formlines from Lead Up Races

The Rosehill Guineas is the ‘on pattern’ lead up race having supplied 14 winners since 1994 with six completing the double. Interestingly, since 2017, four horses have won the Tulloch Stakes the week prior and gone on to win the Derby on the 7 day back up. Of these, three have come off heavily rain affected tracks and won again on heavily rain affected tracks.

    Age

The Australian Derby is a race for 3YO’s only.

    Weight

The Australian Derby is run under set weights conditions.

    Gender

Given there is also a Group 1 race for 3YO fillies over the same distance run a week prior, colts and geldings have won the vast majority of Australian Derby’s.

    Australian Derby Odds 2023

Well before the Australian Derby field is released – pretty much all of the Aussie bookmakers will open early markets, or all-in markets, for Australian Derby betting. Many believe that this is the ideal time to bet on your chosen horse because you might be able to get great odds on your choice.

Once the bookies release their 2022 Australian Derby odds, they will tend to fluctuate in the lead up to the race. There are a number of things that cause this, so when we get a better idea of the type of horses that will be aiming for the Australian Derby, as well as their recent form, you will notice the odds change dramatically.

If you do decide to place bets in these early markets, it means you could find one of the favourites at double digit odds or more. So, if your choice does go on to win, you will get more return on your investment! Although, there is increased risk if you choose this option and therefore you should be aware of the risks.

Depending on when you place your 2022 Australian Derby futures bet, your horse may not even get a run in the race, but you also won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are looking to have a bet when it says ‘Before Noms’, then you know you’ll receive your cash back if your horse doesn’t run in the race.

We are yet to see the odds for the Australian Derby be released. We will keep an eye on this for you, and let you know when the odds come out.

    Australian Derby Field 2023

There was a nice and big field for the 2022 edition of the Australian Derby, with 18 runners going round the Randwick track. Hitotsu was sent out at the favourite on the Heavy 9 track. Hitotsu had just come off winning the Group 1 Australian Guineas, and prior to that race, he won the Victoria Derby.

On the next line of betting was Kiwi Regal Lion, who had just put in a good performance at the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes, for a second place. Prior to this race, he finished third in the NZ Derby, which is a Group 1.

Forgot You and Character were the last to runners in the field under double digit odds. Forgot You had just run a respectable third place in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas, while Character took out the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes in his last race prior to the Australian Derby.

    Australian Derby Results 2023

With the 2023 Australian Derby yet to be run and won, let’s have a look at the 2022 rendition of the race to see if there are any key performance indicators that we can draw from for the 2023 race.

It was a good race for this favourite punters, as the $3.70 favourite, Hitotsu, proved too good for the other 17 runners. Hitotsu didn’t have it all his way though, and John Allen had to fight off an intense battle from Benaud and Alegron, who both finished within one length of the leader.

There wasn’t really might fight from any of the other runners, as the forth placed Zoumon was 8.94L back of the leader! Hitotsu was able to use a fairly good barrier (4) to his advantage, and was 8th at the 400m mark.

Benaud finished in 2nd, 0.36L off the leader, and it was always going to be a fairly difficult task, starting all the way in barrier 16. He also left his run a little too late, being back in 13th at the 400m mark. Alegron then crossed the line, 0.75L behind Hitotsu. The barrier was decent (3), but Hugh Bowman just couldn’t get the gelding going to keep up with Hitotsu.
