    Australian Cup Introduction

The Australian Cup is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in March. The race in 2023 will be held on Saturday 25th of March at Flemington Racecourse. Looking back to the race in 2022, it was won by Duais.

Another weight-for-age contest that highlights the best middle distance horses during the Melbourne Autumn. This race has always carried prestige, when it was first run in 1863 it was run over 3600m, a race that was longer than the Melbourne Cup. It was only from 1964 that it was altered to its current distance of 2000m.

The honour roll is long and illustrious, one of the early winners was the outstanding Malua back in 1886, two years after he had won the Melbourne Cup then in the next season he came back and won the Grand National Hurdle.

Bart Cummings has an unmatched record as a trainer winning this race on thirteen occasions. His little mare Leilani won this race in 1975 and Bart’s last winner was Sirmione in 2008. This was always the Autumn target for Bart’s Melbourne Cup horses, Let’s Elope (1992) and Saintly (1996) completed the double for Bart.

Most recent horse to win multiple Australian Cups was Harlem (2018-2019) who won at big odds on both occasions.

    Australian Cup Betting 2023

There are a lot of important factors to consider before betting on the Australian Cup. Make sure you have a read on below before you place your bets:

Is Previous Australian Cup Form a Good Indicator of Future Success?

There have been a number of multiple winners in the Australian Cup, the most recent being Harlem in 2018-2019. The older weight-for-age horses usually return year on year to take on the Victorian weight-for-age race of the Autumn.

The previous renewal can be a good pointer to the next season’s race.

Should I Bet On The Favourite in the Australian Cup?

The Australian Cup has been a bit of a nightmare for favourite backers in recent starts. The last favourite to win the race was Humidor in 2017 when equal favourite at $4.20.

The weight-for-age contest will draw the best of the best and many a champion has been successful in this event, and if there is a standout odds on pop, would definitely follow.

    Formlines from Lead Up Races

The two clear lead-up races are clear. Almost all runners in recent times have come through the C.F. Orr Stakes or Peter Young Stakes before going on to win the Australian Cup.

When looking for the winner of this year’s Australian Cup watch and critique both races before arriving at a decision. The 2022 winner, Duais finished 6th in the Chipping Norton Stakes before contesting the Australian Cup.

    Age

In the last 20 years, Super Cool is the only three-year-old to win the Australian Cup. The older, more seasoned weight-for-age runners have proven over time the best guide to winning this race. Duais, the winner in 2022, was 4.

    Weight

Weight-for-age is the level playing field for all ages and genders. A smart three-year-old can get an advantage with a lightweight, but in saying that the three-year-old record in this race is poor.

    Gender

Only five mares have won this race in the last 33 years, with one of them being in the 2022 edition of the Australian Cup, when Duais won.

Although, it is clear the boys have the best record in this race.

    Australian Cup Odds 2023

Well before the official Australian Cup field is released – many bookmakers will open early markets, or all-in markets, for Australian Cup betting. Many believe this is the best time to bet on your favourite horse, as you might be able to bet on good runners for the 2023 Australian Cup at juicy odds.

Once the bookies release their 2023 Australian Cup odds, they will tend to fluctuate pretty much day-by-day in the lead up to the big race, especially when we get a better idea of the type of horses that will be targeting the race, as well as their recent form.

If you do choose to punt on these early markets, it means you could find the favourite at a price of $10 or more. So, if your chosen horse does go on to win, you will get more cash in your back pocket! However, there is increased risk if you choose to go down this path and you should be well aware.

Depending on when you place your 2023 Australian Cup futures bet, your horse may not even run, but you won’t get your money back, occurring when the market is ‘All-In’ or closer to the starting date. If you are betting when it says ‘Before Noms’, then you can rest easy knowing you’ll receive your money back if your horse doesn’t run.

The odds are not yet out for the Australian Cup in 2023, but please be sure to check back soon, as we will have the odds listed below, once available.

    Australian Cup Field 2023

It was a fairly decent field of 11 for the 2022 edition of the Australian Cup, with Think It Over coming in as the $3.00 pre-race favourite. Think It Over has just won the Group 2 Apollo Stakes about a month prior to this race, and in his previous race, the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes, he finished a respectable 4th.

Spanish Mission was in the next line of better, and was ridden by none other than J-Mac. Spanish Mission grabbed the attention of many Aussies, as the stallion finished 3rd in the Melbourne Cup. He then went on to finish 4th in the Group 2 Zipping Classic, and 3rd in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup, before contesting the Australian Cup.

After that, the only other runners who were priced under double digits were Duais and Cascadian, both at $8.00. Cascadian had just won the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes in late February. Duais came 6th in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes before contesting the Australian Cup.

    Australian Cup Results 2023

It was a fairly open market for the 2022 edition of the Australian Cup, as only 4 runners jumped with less than double digit odds. The $3.00 favourite, Think It Over, wasn’t able to get the chocolates in this Group 1, finishing 2nd, 2L behind the winner.

On the second line of betting was the $4.40 chance, Spanish Mission, who also wasn’t able to get the Group 1 win on Australian soil, and he ended up finishing 3rd, 2.75L behind the winner.

So, who did end up winning the Australian Cup? Well, it was one of the other chances in the field that was under double digit odds, Duais. She was an $8.00 chance to win the race and had incredible speed from being back in 8th place at the 400m mark to storm home and take the win by 2L!
