The Australasian Oaks is a Group 1 race which takes place each year in late April / early May. The race in 2022 will be held on Saturday 29th of April at Morphettville Racecourse. Looking back at the race in 2022, it was won by Glint Of Hope.

For three-year-old fillies the Australasian Oaks was first run in 1982 and won by the Bob Hoysted trained Rose Of Kingston who was ultimately named Australian Horse of the Year.

The race was quickly upgraded to Group 1 status the following year in 1983 and was won by Royal Regatta.

Some of Australia’s leading fillies head a star studded list of winners of the Australasian Oaks including Imposera (1988) and Mannerism (1991) who both continued on to win the Caulfield Cup as four-year-old mares.

The two Hall Of Fame trainers Bart Cummings and Lee Freedman share the record for the most number of winners of the Australasian Oaks with four winners each.

Australian Group 1 winning record holder Damien Oliver has ridden four winners and holds the record with his most recent winner being Princess Jenni (2019).

One of the most popular wins in recent times was when Harry Coffey drove Sopressa home to win in 2008, the first Group 1 win for the popular rider who has fought health issues his entire career.

A great capacity field was announced for the 2022 edition of the Australasian Oaks, including 16 runners and four emergencies. There ended up being two scratchings before the race, which meant first and second emergencies, Bundle Of Fun and Roots managed to gain a place in the race.

Looking at the odds it was My Whisper who was the $4.60 favourite. The 3YO filly was the deserved favourite, after winning her last four starts, including the Group 3 Auraria Stakes in her last start. She has gone straight from that Group 3 to this Group 1, and has not been tried at Group 2 level. Jamie Kah gets the ride, and the filly has a season record of 5: 4-0-0.

Next up in the odds is El Patroness, who was actually scratched before the race. The rest of the runners for the Australasian Oaks were $10 or greater, which just shows how open the 2022 edition of the race is. Of the runners at $10, we have Daisies, Bon’s A Pearla, Mac ‘N’ Cheese and Glint Of Hope.

As the odds suggested, it was a very open field in the Australasian Oaks for 2022, as only one runners was listed under double digit odds, which was My Whisper, after El Patroness was scratched (at odds of $6.00). In total 16 runners took part in the Group 1, and the 2000m is no easy feat for the field.

Crossing the line in first place was Glint Of Hope, but she certainly didn’t have it all her way, with just half a length separating the top three runners. The inside barrier (2) seemed to work well enough for jockey Daniel Moor, who managed to add another win to his collection.

Next to cross the finish line was Barb Raider who was second at both the 800m and 400m mark, but just didn’t have enough to truly challenge Glint Of Hope. The 3YO filly ended up just 0.2L behind the winner, with Craig Williams overcoming the wide-ish barrier (12) to get the $90,225 in prizemoney.

Wrapping up the minor placing was the pre-race favourite, My Whisper. The filly was 4th at the 800m mark, and actually dropped back to 6th by the 400m mark, and put in a great effort under the guidance of Jamie Kah, but at the end of the day, she just couldn’t do enough to get the win, finishing 0.5L behind Glint Of Hope.
