Williams Hoping Gailo Chop Can Finish Season with a Bang

Trainer Matthew Williams believes that a better draw and a less brutal tempo should work in the favour of his ten-year-old Gailo Chop in Saturday’s Group 1 2020 Kingston Town Classic (1800m).

The journeyman gelding was caught wide without cover last start in the Railway Stakes (1600m), and tired at the turn to finish last.

“It’s a much better gate for him on Saturday, barrier four,” Williams said.

“We wanted to be forward on him (in the Railway) and so did about 10 other runners inside him. It was carnage.

“It was the quickest mile race he has been in, compared to the couple of runs in the Makybe Diva he had. They were going along four five lengths quicker a furlong in the Railway than they were in the Makybe last year.

“Drawn four, he should be able to bounce and be there. He might take up the lead and if he can get things run along to suit him better, he can turn that poor run around from last start.”

“He had a gallop (on Tuesday) at Lark Hill. Brad Rawiller worked him over a mile, working up the last 600m solo,” Williams said.

“He had a set of blinkers on. Brad said his action was great. He is very clean in the wind after the gallop, so he has come through that well.”

Gailo Chop is currently a $51 chance, with Railway Stakes winner Inspirational Girl the $2.60 favourite for Saturday’s 2020 Kingston Town Classic.
