Octane returns to Victoria after chalking up five victories from six outings in South Australia, lining up in the 1000m Farewell To Rob Gaylard at Flemington on Saturday.

It has been a long road for Octane, who fetched $1.4 million at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale in 2017, but has had a less than spectacular career opening, winning just one of his first six starts in Victoria under Ciaron Maher.

Philip Stokes has since built him from the ground up in the lower grades in South Australia, saying he “took all the gear off him [Octane] and basically started all over with him. He’s been great with his attitude.”

He gave his opposition too big of a head start when resuming at Morphettville this prep, but has hit his stride with two wins on the trot, and the chance to complete a hattrick at Flemington on Saturday.

His win at Gawler two starts ago was particularly eye-catching, peeling nine wide at the turn before letting down and securing the win by 0.3L over Brimarvi Vehero, and Dexelation, who won last weekend at Moonee Valley.

From Muswellbrook to the Melbourne Cup, Will is mad about all things racing and sport. Spent countless hours in the backyard as a child pretending to be Glenn McGrath, and has been known to get deadly late swing with a taped tennis ball.
